  • Potchefstroom Weekly Ward Group Update – 7 August 2025

Every week, Potchefstroom residents use their local ward WhatsApp groups to share updates, raise concerns, and offer support in the face of daily service delivery challenges. From power cuts and water leaks to road incidents and safety concerns, these chats reflect the heartbeat of the community. This week’s neutral summary, compiled independently and without political bias, captures the most relevant discussions from 1 to 7 August 2025, including the handover of over 13,000 demerger petition letters, infrastructure alerts, and heartfelt community responses to crisis. Image: The Go-To Guy Creation 🚨 Road Incidents and Fire Emergencies Several alerts were shared about accidents and fires in the area: 31 July : A motor vehicle accident (MVA) was reported on the M12 near Klerksdorp , with no road blockage but a request to proceed with caution. 1 August : A structural fire  occurred in Malva Street, Baillie Park . Emergency services responded, and the road was temporarily closed. By the next day, the Jordaan family , whose house was lost in the blaze, received strong community support. Clothing sizes and banking details were shared for donations. 4 August : A head-on collision occurred on the N12 en route to Johannesburg . One lane was closed, and authorities were on scene. A fire prevention operation by NWU Emergency Services was also conducted at the university’s West Campus sports grounds  on 28 July. 📝 Finalisation and Submission of Demerger Petition The major focus of this week’s discussions was the culmination of the demerger petition  between Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp: Residents were reminded to submit final petition forms  on 2 and 3 August at Mooirivier Mall. A digital petition link  remained active until the final submission. On 6 August , between 13,000 and 14,000 signed petitions  were officially handed over to the Municipal Demarcation Board of South Africa  in Pretoria. Multiple news agencies were informed to attend the handover. Organisers thanked the public for their overwhelming support, calling it a "phenomenal" collective effort from residents, businesses, and ward committees. One ward alone (Ward 3 and 23 combined) delivered 4,263 forms . ⚡ Electricity Disruptions Power outages were reported in several areas, including: Bloem Street Beyers Naudé 289 Residents struggled to reach the municipality via phone but eventually saw power restored in some parts. Community members were seen assisting each other with updates about repairs and progress. 💧 Ongoing Water and Drainage Issues Numerous complaints were raised regarding water and drainage: A persistent leak in Pavey Street  remained unresolved, despite previous reports. The leak at Kamp Street 18  was growing, prompting renewed requests for action. Some residents expressed concern about purified water flowing into streets without intervention from the municipality. Frustration also emerged over the lack of response from municipal offices and unanswered service lines. 💡 Street Light Complaints Across Suburbs Numerous wards reported non-functional street lights , creating unsafe and dark conditions: Jeugd Street : Repairs were finally initiated, which was positively noted by residents. Grimbeeck Street, Louw Street, Albert Nel Street, Hoff Street, Paul Street , and areas near Potch Primary School  remained dark and dangerous. Residents in Kamp Street  and along Beyers Naudé  also voiced concern about prolonged outages. One message highlighted a serious safety issue at a traffic light on the corner of Walter Sisulu and Smit Street , where multiple muggings and break-ins had occurred due to lack of lighting. 🤝 Community Behaviour and Reminders Admins urged residents to be patient and respectful  in group discussions, particularly when tensions rose over noise, lost pets, or service delivery complaints. A reminder was also issued about street etiquette  and being understanding when group members posted complaints or requests. 🧾 Municipal Tariff Clarification Some confusion surfaced around electricity tariff billing . A reminder was issued that July bills still reflect old tariffs , since they are based on June consumption . Residents who submit readings manually were advised to expect this discrepancy. 📍 Summary and Closing This week's community update captures a broad range of grassroots challenges and achievements. The handover of thousands of demerger petitions  marked a milestone in local civic action, while streetlight outages , drainage failures , and emergency events  kept group chats active and engaged. Despite persistent frustration with municipal responsiveness, the community’s cohesion and willingness to help one another, whether by donating clothes, reporting leaks, or pushing for infrastructure repairs, remains a defining feature of Potchefstroom’s residents. #TheGoToGuy #potchgazette #PotchefstroomCommunity #WardWatchUpdate #ServiceDeliveryStories #WeArePotch

Shoppers are invited to add one small item to the trolley as they leave the store, every can, packet or box will ease the burden of a neighbour in need. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations How it works Friendly volunteers will hand out leaflets explaining the project. After paying for your groceries, simply drop one non-perishable item , a can of food, a packet of pasta, maize meal, rice, or any other usable staple, into the marked trolley. Each full trolley will go directly to stock the “Take-for-Free Table,” where families can collect essentials at no cost. Why it matters A single tin or packet may seem small, yet together these donations create a lifeline for households facing hunger and hardship. The process is quick, easy, and tangibly impactful. Potch Cares Whether you stop by to say hello or slip a can into the basket on your way out, you’ll be part of turning ordinary shopping trips into extraordinary acts of kindness. Join the effort, share the message, and help fill every trolley, because in Potchefstroom, a little generosity goes a long way. #TheGoToGuy #potchgazette #vatverniettafel #PackATrolley #PotchLetsHelp #stroomcares #ShareHope

  • Elevating Patient Safety: Seminar Highlights Global Best Practices in Healthcare Systems

On 6 August 2025, Potchefstroom Hospital, together with North West University and the National Research Foundation, hosted a Patient Safety Seminar at the Residence Hall. The event centered on transforming healthcare quality by creating safer systems that reduce risks, prevent mistakes, and foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Global Insights into Patient Safety Systems Patient safety is defined by the World Health Organization  as the absence of preventable harm during healthcare delivery, achieved through structured activities, including leadership, communication, training, reporting systems, technology, and patient engagement, that consistently reduce risks and adverse outcomes. Leading institutions such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI)  advocate a total systems approach , integrating safety science, high-reliability principles, leadership commitment, and learning systems to eliminate harm and build safety competencies among healthcare workers. Image: Potchefstroom Hospital Essential Tools and Innovations Supporting Safer Care The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)  collaborates with global partners through its “Safer Together” initiative to share safety research and advance actionable improvements across healthcare systems. Technological systems like Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE)  dramatically reduce medication errors, by as much as 80% overall and 55% in harm-related incidents and are endorsed as vital safety strategies. Similarly, barcode medication verification  at bedside prevents administration errors, with studies showing up to an 82% reduction in such errors and a 20% drop in mortality rates. Another key tool is the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist , whose implementation has proportionally reduced surgical complications and mortality by up to a third in diverse healthcare settings, making it a globally recommended, cost-effective safety intervention. Cultivating a Safety Culture and System Thinking Research underscores the value of a non-punitive safety culture rooted in open communication, leadership engagement, and ongoing training. Tools such as the SOPS (Safety Attitudes Questionnaire)  help measure and strengthen this culture within healthcare teams . A systems-thinking approach  further enhances safety by recognizing interconnected factors, staff behavior, workflow design, environmental clarity and addressing root causes in a structured, collectively informed way. Effective communication frameworks , such as the SBAR model (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation), have proven to improve handover clarity, minimize miscommunication, and reduce patient harm. Final thought The Patient Safety Seminar in Potchefstroom reflects a growing trend toward system-based reforms and evidence-driven innovations in healthcare. By incorporating global best practices, ranging from digital tools like CPOE and barcode verification, to checklists and communication models, healthcare providers can build safer, more trustworthy environments that consistently support patient well-being. #TheGoToGuy #potchgazette #newstalk #potchefstroomhosiptal #PatientSafetySeminar   #PotchefstroomHospital   #NWUCollaboration   #SafetyFirst   #QualityCare   #NWU   #healthcare

  • Mayor Mahlophe Leads Oversight Visit to Revitalised Klerksdorp Library

On Tuesday, 5 August 2025, the Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana, Councillor Fikile Mahlophe, conducted an oversight inspection at the Klerksdorp Library. The visit followed a four-month closure of the facility, during which extensive repairs and upgrades were carried out. The inspection aimed to assess the progress made and ensure that outstanding issues were being addressed in a timely and effective manner. Image: Office of the Executive Mayor City of Matlosana Local Municipality. Major Maintenance Undertaken at Key Provincial Library The Klerksdorp Library, recognised as one of the largest in the North West Province and the central library in Matlosana, underwent a series of much-needed repairs. These included a full upgrade of the plumbing system, with the replacement of old pipes and the restoration of toilet facilities. However, a low water pressure issue remains, prompting Mayor Mahlophe to directly contact the Technical Services Directorate for urgent intervention. Roofing repairs were also carried out, with 50% of the planned improvements already completed. The remaining work is scheduled for the upcoming financial year. Faulty lighting within the library was another concern raised during the walkthrough. The Mayor immediately contacted the Electrical Department to begin repairs, including fixing the lights within the roof dome area. In the children’s section, preparations are underway to replace the existing carpets with rubber flooring more suitable for young users, enhancing safety and comfort. Image: Office of the Executive Mayor City of Matlosana Local Municipality. Technology and Resources Still Lagging While the physical upgrades were noted, the Mayor expressed concern over the non-functional WiFi, which currently leaves library users without internet access. He contacted the municipal IT Department on the spot to prioritise the matter. During his interaction with library staff, several operational challenges were brought to light, including the lack of tools of trade and insufficient resource allocations. The Mayor instructed the Director of Community Services to attend to these issues without delay, underscoring the need for well-equipped personnel in delivering quality public services. Image: Office of the Executive Mayor City of Matlosana Local Municipality. Commitment to Safe, Inclusive Library Spaces Throughout the oversight visit, Mayor Mahlophe emphasised the importance of providing a safe, peaceful, and accessible environment for all library users, particularly students and members of the public who rely on the facility for study, research, and digital access. He expressed satisfaction with the maintenance already completed and urged that the outstanding work be concluded as quickly as possible to restore full functionality to the library. Image: Office of the Executive Mayor City of Matlosana Local Municipality. Final Thought The oversight inspection of the Klerksdorp Library by Mayor Mahlophe reflects a continued commitment to service delivery, infrastructure improvement, and community engagement within the City of Matlosana. As the library full reopens, the focus now shifts to ensuring that unresolved challenges are promptly addressed to restore this vital public institution to its full operational capacity. #TheGoToGuy #klerksdorpgazette #newstalk #library
