A dramatic rescue unfolded on Friday, December 5, 2025 , after a dog was discovered trapped for days in a dangerously deep hole near Khutsong. A brave employee from the Carletonville SPCA  risked his own safety, securing the dog, now named "Survivor" , with unexpected assistance from illegal miners in a remarkable act of compassion. The dog is currently safe and searching for a loving new home. Image: Carletonville SPCA  The Distress Call and The Dangerous Pit The rescue operation began on November 20, 2025, after the Carletonville SPCA received a call from a concerned resident regarding a dog that had fallen into a deep excavation. According to Wanda Kramer , a governing committee member and office manager of the SPCA, the hole was located at a large illegal rubbish dump situated between Khutsong South and Welverdiend. Upon arrival, the team spotted the stranded dog several meters down. Despite warnings from firemen regarding the inherent safety risks of descending into the unstable pit, SPCA staff member Jacob Moroke  made the critical decision to proceed, fearing the dog would perish from hunger and thirst if left. A Heroic Descent and Unexpected Allies Moroke's descent was a high-risk gamble. Kramer noted the team had no way of knowing if the dog was injured or aggressive. "Jacob said that he trusted us and went into the hole," Kramer explained. Upon reaching the animal, Moroke found the dog uninjured and completely non-aggressive. The operation soon took an unexpected turn when a group of illegal miners  arrived at the site. Initially apprehensive, the SPCA team was quickly relieved when two members of the group volunteered to help after learning the purpose of the rescue. Moroke quickly rigged the dog to keep it secure. The situation became tense as the group pulled them up, with loose ground collapsing  around both Moroke and the dog as they neared the surface. Kramer described the moments as "nerve-wracking," but Moroke remained composed, and the pair were pulled out safely  after a two-hour ordeal. "Survivor" Seeks a Forever Home SPCA staff estimated that the friendly dog, which they subsequently named "Survivor," had been trapped inside the hole for approximately four days. While the cause of the fall remains unclear, the immediate threat to her life was averted. "This was an unusual incident, but this is what we are here for, to protect and help animals in the area," said Kramer, underlining the core mission of the organisation. "Survivor"  is currently recovering and is now ready for adoption. The Klerksdorp CBD became  a "hive of activity"  on Friday, December 5, 2025 , as a powerful demonstration of solidarity took place . In line with the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Child Abuse  campaign, the Library Services Department of the City of Matlosana Local Municipality   organised  a significant 4-kilometre walk  against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) , drawing in municipal employees and community members seeking justice. Extensive Stakeholder Collaboration The successful staging of the march was made possible through extensive collaboration between the Matlosana Local Municipality's Library Department and numerous key stakeholders. The participating organisations included : South African Police Service (SAPS) Standard Bank, NTT Nissan, ABSA Bank GCIS (Government Communication and Information System) National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Vuselela College Kamotsumi Solutions Thuthuzela Crisis Centre Film and Publication Board (FPB) Department of Social Development Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Route and High-Level Support The march kicked off  from the Klerksdorp Library , proceeding  to the Klerksdorp City Mall and returning  to the library. The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Potchefstroom  executed a successful cross-border roadblock  on the N12 highway, a critical link between Potchefstroom and the Gauteng Province on 5 December. The high-visibility operation was a concentrated effort to enforce strict law-compliance, promote road safety , and actively disrupt criminal activities  along this significant route. Leadership and Collaboration The initiative was spearheaded by Brigadier Matamela , who led a coordinated deployment of SAPS members and provincial Traffic officials . This multi-agency collaboration was instrumental in ensuring a comprehensive approach to monitoring the flow of traffic and addressing potential transgressions. High-Level Ministerial Support The importance of the operation was underscored by the presence of high-ranking government officials. Mrs. Barbra Creecy, the Minister of Road and Transport Management , and Mr. Wessels Morweng, the North West MEC for Community Safety , visited the roadblock to observe the proceedings. Both officials commended the level of multi-agency cooperation and visibility  demonstrated by the teams on the ground.
