Unlike traditional ads that might get a quick glance, The Go-To Guy creates engaging written articles and even video content about your business. By turning your business into a story featured in the Potch Gazette or on our platform, they help readers form a personal connection with your brand. Your business’s story and promotions can be boosted across multiple channels, from the popular Potch Gazette news site to The Go-To Guy’s social media pages and even our mobile app. That means you’re reaching people whether they’re browsing the web at work, scrolling through Facebook in the evening, or checking the app on the go. They take the heavy lifting of marketing off your shoulders so you can focus on running your business. As they put it, understanding the challenges local entrepreneurs face is at the heart of their service, and they will tailor their offerings to help your business thrive . Why Advertising with The Go-To Guy Makes a Difference Choosing where to advertise is a big decision. So, why choose The Go-To Guy to promote your business? The benefits are clear and compelling: Unmatched Local Reach:  The Go-To Guy isn’t an out-of-town agency or a generic online directory; it’s a Potchefstroom-focused platform with a built-in audience. With the Potch Gazette news section drawing tens of thousands of visits monthly , your business gets exposure on a site that locals already trust and visit regularly. That kind of targeted reach is hard to find elsewhere. Instead of your marketing message being lost in the noise of a big-city newspaper or an all-purpose website, it’s front-and-center in a community hub. This means more visibility, more clicks, and more customers walking through your door. Quality Content that Captures Attention:  Advertising with The Go-To Guy means telling a story, not just placing an ad. People are naturally drawn to stories and useful content more than to blatant advertisements. When readers come across a feature about your business, perhaps a write-up in the Potch Gazette about how your cafĂ© sources local ingredients, or a video interview with you showcasing your services, it doesn’t feel like an ad, it feels like news or entertainment. That keeps them engaged longer and leaves a deeper impression. In marketing, engagement is gold: the more time someone spends learning about your business, the more likely they are to trust it and eventually become a customer. The Go-To Guy’s content-driven approach ensures your marketing feels authentic and valuable to the audience. Trust by Association:  One of the hardest things for any business to build is trust. Here’s where advertising through a reputable community platform gives you a huge advantage. The Go-To Guy has spent years earning the trust of Potchefstroom’s people, by providing reliable information, uplifting community stories, and supporting local causes . When your business is showcased on this platform, that trust rubs off on you. Readers think, “If I’m reading about this business on The Go-To Guy, it must be legit.”  It’s a subtle but powerful halo effect. Essentially, you’re aligning your brand with a name that people already recognize and respect. This credibility boost can shorten the time it takes for a customer to decide to give you a try. Community Connection and Goodwill:  The Go-To Guy is deeply woven into the community fabric. They sponsor local sports (like the Potchefstroom Dorp Rugby Club) and partner with charitable initiatives (such as the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home) to give back to the community . This community-first ethos means that when you advertise with them, you’re also indirectly supporting these positive efforts. Many consumers in Potch love to support businesses that are community-minded. By being seen on The Go-To Guy, you signal that you’re part of this local network of support and growth. It’s an added benefit  that goes beyond typical advertising – you’re not just selling something, you’re showing that you’re invested in the community’s well-being too. Convenience and Peace of Mind:  As a business owner, you have a hundred things to juggle. Marketing might be way down on your list or something you’re not confident about. The Go-To Guy makes the whole process easy and hassle-free. Their team handles the content creation, the publishing, the boosting – all those technical and creative details that you might not have time for. This means you get professional marketing without the stress. No need to become a social media expert overnight or learn the ins and outs of online ads; The Go-To Guy’s experts have it covered. Plus, they understand the local market nuances (seasonal trends in Potch, local lingo, community interests) better than any outside agency ever would. It’s like having a friendly local marketing department at your service, on-demand. Marketing: The Key to Business Growth in Today’s World It’s often said that “doing business without advertising is like winking at someone in the dark, you know what you’re doing, but nobody else does.”  This rings especially true in today’s competitive environment. You might ask yourself, “Is marketing really that important for my small business?”  The answer from experts and successful entrepreneurs is a resounding yes . Consider this: 87% of small businesses with a marketing plan report that their marketing is successful, compared to only 13% of businesses without a plan . In other words, the vast majority of businesses that take marketing seriously see positive results, while those that wing it often struggle. Marketing isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity if you want to grow and not just survive. What does effective marketing do? For one, it builds brand awareness, people can’t become your customers if they don’t know you exist. It also builds trust and credibility over time; the more someone hears positive things about your business, the more comfortable they feel choosing you over a competitor. Good marketing targets the right audience, so you’re reaching people who are likely to be interested in your product or service, which makes your advertising spend more efficient. It also differentiates you – clever campaigns or informative content can set you apart in a crowded market. Importantly, marketing amplifies that crucial word-of-mouth that small businesses thrive on. In Potchefstroom, word-of-mouth might be a conversation at a braai or a post in a local Facebook group. When you advertise and tell your story through The Go-To Guy, you’re giving people something to talk about . You’re essentially supplying word-of-mouth fuel in the form of stories and news that feature your business. Suddenly, it’s not just “I need a plumber, who do I call?”  but “I read about this plumbing business on The Go-To Guy, they sounded really trustworthy.”  That’s powerful. It’s also worth noting that your competitors are likely stepping up their marketing game. Over half of small businesses (about 51%) plan to invest more in social media ads and content marketing moving forward . Why? Because those are proven ways to engage today’s consumers. People are spending more time online and on their phones, and smart businesses meet them there with useful, engaging content. By advertising with The Go-To Guy, you’re essentially hopping on this trend in the best way possible, through a local channel that specializes in the kind of content people want to consume. It’s a strategic move that keeps you one step ahead  of those who stick only to old-school methods or who aren’t advertising at all. A Trusted Partner Invested in Your Success When you team up with The Go-To Guy, you’re not dealing with a faceless corporate agency; you’re partnering with fellow Potchefstroom locals who truly care about your success. This shines through in the feedback from businesses that have worked with them. “It is nice to see that there is still a place that provides a valued service,”  one local entrepreneur noted appreciatively . Another client was thrilled to find “a business that cares about my  business” . These aren’t just testimonials, they’re proof that The Go-To Guy builds real relationships  with its clients. Your goals become their goals. They celebrate your wins and go the extra mile to help overcome your challenges. Part of why The Go-To Guy is so trusted is because it’s rooted in the community ethos. The team understands Potchefstroom, its people, its culture, and its unique business landscape, inside out. They’ve poured that understanding back into the community by sponsoring beloved local sports teams and supporting non-profits . They’re not here to make a quick buck and disappear; they’re here for the long haul, growing alongside the community. That gives them a stake in your success. When local businesses thrive, The Go-To Guy thrives, and vice versa. It’s a symbiotic relationship that you become a part of when you advertise with them. Moreover, The Go-To Guy prides itself on professionalism and consistency. The content they produce is polished and of high quality, the kind of content you’d expect from a top marketing agency, delivered with a personal Potch touch. They also uphold high standards of accuracy and reliability in everything they publish. That reliability extends to you as a client: if they promise a campaign or a feature, they will deliver it as agreed, on time, and with flair. Perhaps the biggest reason to trust The Go-To Guy is their philosophy. They often say that by choosing The Go-To Guy, you’re “partnering with a platform that understands and celebrates the essence of Potchefstroom” , one where “every story matters, and every business has the opportunity to shine.” They genuinely believe every local business, your  business, has something special to offer, and they see it as their job to make sure the community sees that too. With that kind of passion and dedication driving your marketing efforts, you can feel confident that you’re in good hands. Ready to Tell Your Story? The resort offers basic but well-maintained camping facilities for tents or caravans, and may also have a few simple chalets or rooms (so it’s wise to inquire ahead about accommodation options). The atmosphere is friendly and family-oriented, with plenty of open space for kids to play while the grown-ups focus on their fishing lines. Anglers here can target the Vaal’s popular species: expect bites from strong common carp, wily catfish, and even the occasional yellowfish in the currents. According to its profile, Vaaldraai is known as a place where visitors can truly unwind and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Vaal, as much as the sport of fishing itself . Indeed, many come to Vaaldraai to disconnect from hectic city life – days are spent under the shade of willows by the water, and evenings around the campfire swapping fish tales. For tourists and locals alike, Vaaldraai supports the regional goal of tourism awareness by showcasing how Potchefstroom’s outskirts offer serenity and recreation hand in hand. If you’re seeking a no-fuss, back-to-nature fishing escape, bring your gear and a sense of adventure to Vaaldraai. Van Bo Visvang Oord – Deep-Water Angling and Comfort in the Dome Area For those who want a mix of rustic camping and comfortable lodging options, all set against a picturesque riverside backdrop, Van Bo Visvang Oord is a prime choice. The name “Visvang Oord”  translates to “fishing resort,” and Van Bo truly delivers on that promise. Nestled along a 200-meter wide stretch of the Vaal River between Parys and Vanderbijlpark (and still within an easy drive of Potchefstroom), this resort is renowned as a fisher’s paradise. The broad expanse of river frontage means anglers have plenty of room for casting lines, and the depth of the water here is ideal for landing larger fish – the deep-water fishing opportunities ensure you’re not limited to the shallows . Whether you’re after trophy carp, hefty catfish, or testing your skills against the spirited yellowfish on fly tackle, Van Bo’s section of the Vaal can accommodate your angling style. What sets Van Bo Visvang Oord apart is the range of accommodations and amenities it offers on-site, combining outdoor fun with some home comforts. Guests can choose to camp under the stars with their tents or caravans, or opt for a roof over their head in one of the resort’s traditional rondavels (round thatched cottages) or wooden cabins . Each lodging option is designed to be comfortable yet rustic, letting you enjoy the charm of the countryside without sacrificing a good night’s sleep. The resort lies within the famous Vredefort Dome World Heritage area, so beyond fishing you’re also surrounded by remarkable geology and natural beauty . A day off the water might include a short trip into nearby Parys, known for its antique shops and cozy eateries – though many guests find it hard to leave the tranquil riverbanks once they’ve settled their lines in the water. Van Bo goes the extra mile in ensuring a safe, convenient stay for visitors. Security is taken seriously: the grounds are monitored by CCTV and patrolled 24 hours a day for peace of mind , meaning you can relax and focus on your fishing or family time. Forgot some gear or need to top up supplies? No problem, the resort features an on-site tuck shop that stocks fishing tackle, bait, and fresh provisions, as well as treats for the kids . They even cater to special events, hosting things like team-building outings and birthday parties, which speaks to the resort’s welcoming, community-friendly vibe (it’s no wonder Van Bo Visvang Oord proudly carries a 2-star tourism accreditation ). By blending excellent angling, comfortable accommodations, and thoughtful amenities, Van Bo attracts both serious fishermen and vacationing families, thereby supporting local tourism development. When you stay here, you’re not just going fishing, you’re also experiencing a slice of Potchefstroom’s hospitable outdoor culture. Oppi Paal Hengel Oord – Rustic Relaxation on a Quiet Riverbank Rounding out our list is Oppi Paal Hengel Oord, a lesser-known gem for those who truly want to get away from it all and fish in peace. The term “hengel oord”  means “fishing camp,” and Oppi Paal offers a rustic camp-style experience along a calm bend of the Vaal River. Located in the Lindequesdrif vicinity (the same general area as Vaaldraai and Van Bo, roughly between Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark on the Vaal ), Oppi Paal is far enough off the usual tourist path that you’ll often feel like you have the river almost to yourself. This spot is all about simplifying and enjoying nature, expect basic facilities geared toward anglers who are there to fish, relax, and enjoy the riverside ambiance without any pretenses. Oppi Paal’s setting is delightfully tranquil. Tall reeds and overhanging trees line the riverbank, and you might hear fish eagles calling overhead as you settle into your camp chair. The accommodation, if available on-site, is typically no-frills: think camping sites or simple chalets that prioritize proximity to the water over luxury. What you get in return is an authentic outdoorsy atmosphere, it’s the kind of place where early mornings are spent watching the mist lift off the Vaal while waiting for a bite on your line, and evenings are for gathering around a fire under the stars. Anglers here can target the same Vaal River species that Potchefstroom’s waters are known for: sturdy carp, lively yellowfish, sly mudfish, and the ever-present catfish. The most commonly caught fish in the Vaal River include common carp, North African catfish (barbel), smallmouth yellowfish, and mudfish , so you’ll want to come prepared with a versatile tackle setup to maximize your chances. While Oppi Paal may not have the extensive amenities of larger resorts, its charm lies in its simplicity and the camaraderie among anglers who cherish the spot. It’s a place often shared through word-of-mouth in local fishing circles – the kind of venue where regulars greet each other warmly and newcomers are welcomed with fishing tips and maybe a cup of coffee. By spending a day or weekend at Oppi Paal, you’re also contributing to local community engagement, as small camps like this rely on word-of-mouth and local patronage. In return, you get an unplugged experience that reminds you why you fell in love with fishing in the first place. If your goal is to immerse yourself in Potchefstroom’s fishing scene and enjoy some genuine Northwest province hospitality, Oppi Paal Hengel Oord is well worth a visit. Sunnyside River Lodge: A Peaceful Riverside Escape in the Heart of Nature Nestled along the tranquil banks of the Vaal River, just a short drive from Potchefstroom, lies Sunnyside River Lodge, a serene retreat that seamlessly blends natural beauty with warm hospitality. Situated within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Vredefort Dome, the world's oldest and largest meteorite impact crater, this family-run lodge offers guests a unique opportunity to unwind amidst breathtaking landscapes and rich history. • NWU Desmond Tutu School of Medicine Breaks Ground in Potchefstroom

A new chapter in South African medical education began on June 3, 2025, when North-West University (NWU) officially commenced construction of its Desmond Tutu School of Medicine at the Potchefstroom campus. The ceremony, presided over by NWU Principal and Vice-Chancellor Prof Bismark Tyobeka, marked the country’s 11th medical school and signals a concerted effort to address the shortage of healthcare practitioners, particularly in the North West Province and surrounding regions. This article provides a neutral overview of the event, the school’s foundational objectives, and key facts about its planning and future launch. businesstech.co.za Image: NWU Background and Naming In December 2023, the NWU obtained formal permission from the Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla, to establish a new medical school, an undertaking seven years in the making involving feasibility studies, curriculum development, and partnership negotiations with regulatory bodies and government entities. health-sciences.nwu.ac.za   In April 2025, an official naming ceremony took place at the Capital on the Park Hotel in Sandton, where the institution was honorifically designated the NWU Desmond Tutu School of Medicine, a tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s early aspiration to study medicine and his broader humanitarian legacy in the region. This decision received approval from the Archbishop Desmond Tutu IP Trust and was officiated by NWU Chancellor Dr Anna Mokgokong, Chairperson of NWU Council Bert Sorgdrager, NWU Principal Prof Tyobeka, and Dr Mamphela Ramphele, Chairperson of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu IP Trust. taungdailynews.com Image: NWU Construction Ceremony The sod-turning ceremony occurred at precisely 12:46 PM on June 3, 2025, when Prof Tyobeka officially inaugurated the construction site on NWU’s Potchefstroom campus. In attendance were representatives from government agencies, regulatory bodies, the Archbishop Desmond Tutu IP Trust, North West Department of Health officials, and local community leaders. The event underscored the collaborative nature of the project, involving NWU, provincial health authorities, and private sector stakeholders. sanews.gov.za   According to witnesses, the ceremony emphasized not only the physical building of infrastructure but also the symbolic “building of hope” for underserved and rural communities in the province. Academic Programme and Growth Plan The Desmond Tutu School of Medicine is set to welcome its first cohort of MBChB students in 2028. Enrollment is planned to begin with 50 students, scaling to 80 by 2030, and eventually reaching between 100 and 150 from 2031 onwards.  The curriculum will follow an integrated, spiral design totaling 940 credits, an approach intended to foster critical thinking, early clinical exposure, and interprofessional collaboration. Over time, the school plans to introduce postgraduate MMed programmes in specialties such as Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Internal Medicine, Oncology, and Anaesthetics, thereby contributing to both primary care and specialist training in the region. nwu.ac.za Image: NWU Clinical Training Platforms and Partnerships Clinical training for senior-year students will be conducted across multiple sites, including Tshepong and Klerksdorp/Tshepong hospitals, which will serve as key teaching hospitals. cdailynews.com   These partnerships are part of a broader effort to integrate academic training with service delivery in under-resourced areas. Additionally, NWU has indicated plans to establish international collaborations with leading medical schools and research institutions to facilitate faculty exchanges, joint research projects, and capacity-building initiatives. nwu.ac.za   The North West Department of Health has committed to providing logistical support and resources, while private sector stakeholders are expected to assist with infrastructure development and technology platforms. sanews.gov.za Addressing Healthcare Shortages South Africa faces a critical shortage of medical practitioners, particularly in rural provinces. In the North West Province, doctor-to-population ratios have historically lagged behind national averages, prompting calls for region-specific training solutions. businesstech.co.za   By training physicians locally, the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine aims to produce healthcare professionals who are more likely to remain in and serve, rural areas upon graduation. Long-term research initiatives embedded within the curriculum will focus on community-oriented primary care, public health challenges, and social determinants of health to better prepare graduates for local realities. taungdailynews.com Image: NWU Infrastructure and Timeline Construction of the flagship facility is scheduled for completion in late 2027, paving the way for orientation and preparatory activities before student registration in 2028. The building will include lecture halls equipped with modern audio-visual systems, simulation laboratories for skills training, research centres, and dedicated student support services. Future expansions will accommodate growing student numbers and additional postgraduate laboratories. By 2033, when the school is fully operational, it is projected to house approximately 600 medical students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. nwu.ac.za Community Engagement and Vision Aligned with Archbishop Tutu’s values of ubuntu and social justice, the school has articulated a commitment to community engagement through outreach clinics, mobile health units, and public health campaigns targeting preventable diseases. taungdailynews.com The curriculum includes structured community-based rotations where students will deliver primary care services in peri-urban and rural settings under faculty supervision. NWU also plans to establish a community advisory board comprising local leaders, patient advocates, and public health experts to ensure that programme activities remain responsive to the region’s most pressing healthcare needs. s anews.gov.za Image: NWU The groundbreaking of the NWU Desmond Tutu School of Medicine represents more than the construction of bricks and mortar; it is a strategic response to the province’s urgent healthcare needs and a long-term investment in strengthening South Africa’s medical workforce. With a clear growth trajectory, an innovative curriculum, and strong partnerships at both local and international levels, the institution is poised to train a new generation of physicians rooted in community service and academic excellence. As the countdown to the first cohort’s arrival in 2028 continues, stakeholders and observers alike will watch closely to see how this bold initiative contributes to reshaping healthcare access and outcomes across the North West Province and beyond. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #NWU #groundbreaking #Schoolofmedicine

  • Yoga for Harmony and Balance: Cultivating a Healthy Mind and Body at NWU

I n an era characterized by perpetual connectivity and mounting academic pressures, cultivating mental and physical well-being has become a paramount concern for universities worldwide. At North-West University (NWU), nurturing a culture of holistic wellness is not merely aspirational, it is foundational. In collaboration with the India in South Africa (Consulate General of India, Johannesburg), NWU recently hosted a Yoga Day that brought together staff and students for a day of mindful movement, guided breathing practices, and moments of calm. Beyond the event itself, the practice of yoga remains a scientifically supported avenue to foster a healthy mind and body while equipping individuals with techniques to cope with stress. Image: NWU Facebook Highlights from NWU’s Yoga Day On the morning of Yoga Day, a vibrant assembly of mats and participants adorned the green expanse of NWU’s sports field. Professional instructors guided the crowd through a sequence of asanas designed for all experience levels, punctuated by moments of guided breathing and silent reflection. The India in South Africa delegation provided insight into the philosophical underpinnings of yoga, reinforcing its global significance as a medium for cross-cultural exchange. Indoors, students and staff who preferred a more controlled environment gathered in one of NWU’s multipurpose halls. Here, the emphasis shifted to breath-centered practices, featuring pranayama workshops and brief introductions to meditation techniques. Regardless of venue, feedback indicated that participants felt a palpable sense of calm and heightened focus at the event’s conclusion. Image: NWU Facebook Image: NWU Facebook The Benefits of Yoga for Mind and Body Yoga, an ancient practice rooted in Indian traditions, encompasses physical postures (asanas), breath regulation (pranayama), and meditative techniques. Contemporary research underscores its efficacy in bridging the gap between mental and physical health: Enhanced Mental Clarity and Emotional Resilience Studies published in peer-reviewed journals indicate that consistent yoga practice increases gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the brain, an inhibitory neurotransmitter associated with reduced anxiety and improved mood regulation. For students navigating rigorous academic schedules and faculty members balancing administrative duties, these neurochemical shifts translate into enhanced emotional resilience and reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. Improved Physical Flexibility and Strength A structured sequence of asanas systematically targets major muscle groups, promoting flexibility, joint mobility, and muscular strength. Over time, regular practitioners demonstrate increased range of motion in the spine and lower limbs, reducing susceptibility to musculoskeletal discomfort often associated with prolonged periods of sedentary study or office work. Optimized Physiological Function Pranayama techniques, such as alternate nostril breathing and diaphragmatic breathing, have been linked to reductions in resting heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, these breathing exercises facilitate a relaxation response, counterbalancing the “fight-or-flight” state that is frequently triggered during examinations, project deadlines, or departmental meetings. Image: NWU Facebook Yoga as a Coping Mechanism for Stress Stress, when chronic, can impair cognitive function, undermine immune responses, and negatively influence overall quality of life. Yoga’s multifaceted approach, integrating mindful attention, regulated breathing, and deliberate physical engagement, addresses stress on several fronts: Mindfulness and Present-Moment Awareness Mindfulness, a core component of many yoga traditions, trains individuals to observe thoughts and sensations without judgment. Empirical evidence indicates that mindfulness-based interventions can lower perceived stress scores, improve sleep quality, and bolster executive functioning. By anchoring attention to the breath and bodily sensations during asana practice, participants develop skills to recognize stress triggers earlier and respond with intentionality rather than reactivity. Activation of the Relaxation Response Engaging in gentle asanas followed by restorative poses (such as Viparita Karani or Savasana) cultivates the body’s innate relaxation response. This physiological shift, from sympathetic dominance (heightened alertness) to parasympathetic activation (rest and digest), mitigates the harmful effects of prolonged stress exposure, including decreased inflammation markers and improved digestive health. Community and Social Support Participating in group yoga sessions fosters a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Whether practicing under open skies on the NWU sports fields or within the confines of a university hall, participants benefit from collective energy and encouragement. Social support, as documented in health psychology literature, serves as a buffer against stress, reducing perceptions of isolation and facilitating adherence to healthy habits. Image: NWU Facebook Image: NWU Facebook Fostering a Culture of Wellness at NWU NWU’s commitment to well-being extends beyond singular events. Through strategic partnerships with wellness organizations, regular mindfulness workshops, and communication platforms that highlight self-care resources, the university endeavors to make wellness integral to campus life. By providing this day of yoga classes, both free of charge and open to all fitness levels, NWU underscores the message that maintaining a healthy mind and body is not ancillary to academic success but rather a catalytic component of it. Image: NWU Facebook Yoga’s enduring appeal lies in its capacity to harmonize mind, body, and spirit, principles that resonate deeply within NWU’s ethos of holistic development. The recent Yoga Day, co-hosted with the India in South Africa Consulate, served as both a celebration of this ancient practice and a testament to the university’s unwavering dedication to wellness. As empirical research continues to validate yoga’s myriad benefits, from stress reduction and emotional regulation to improved physical well-being, NWU remains poised to integrate these findings into campus-wide initiatives. In doing so, the university cultivates not only confident graduates but also resilient individuals equipped to navigate life’s complexities with equilibrium and grace. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #NWU #Yogaday

  • Potchefstroom First Responders Prepares for Fire Season: Volunteers Need Community Support

As the dry winter winds begin to sweep across Potchefstroom, local authorities, emergency teams, and volunteers are preparing for what has become an annual and growing threat: veldfires. With the arrival of fire season between June and September , the combination of brittle vegetation, low humidity, and strong seasonal winds creates a perfect storm for fires to ignite and spread rapidly. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Each year, veldfires across South Africa leave a path of destruction in their wake. In the North West province alone , fires in 2023 destroyed an estimated 38,000 hectares  of grazing land, disrupted farming operations, and damaged rural infrastructure. For farming communities around Potchefstroom, particularly in areas such as Vyfhoek, Mooibank, and Ikageng’s fringes, the danger is not just hypothetical; it is immediate, tangible, and deeply personal. According to the South African Weather Service , veldfires become more common during winter when relative humidity often drops below 30%. Berg winds , warm, dry winds that blow down from elevated areas, are a major accelerant, causing fires to race across open fields and through rural homesteads with alarming speed. Volunteers: First In, Often Alone In rural municipalities like JB Marks, formal firefighting units are supported by community-based volunteer teams . These groups consist of trained but unpaid individuals who step in to assist professional responders, often arriving first on scene in remote areas where formal units may take longer to reach. However, these teams are not formally funded  and often operate with limited resources. They rely sometimes on donated equipment and most critically, community goodwill . The challenge is not only physical but logistical, maintaining stamina, hydration, and alertness during long shifts without access to the same infrastructure that supports full-time emergency personnel. Why Consumable Donations Matter During active fires, volunteers can spend 8 to 12 hours  on the fire line, battling heat, smoke, and exhaustion. The human body loses water quickly under such conditions, and without proper hydration and nutrition, physical performance and safety, are severely compromised. That’s why donations of bottled water, energy drinks, protein bars, trail mixes, and electrolyte sachets  make a real, measurable difference. These items help prevent dehydration, fatigue, and heatstroke while keeping volunteer teams alert and operational. In previous years, local residents and businesses in Potchefstroom have stepped up with incredible generosity. • Volkies, Jou Tyd Is Nou

🏉🏉🏉🏉🏉🏉🏉🏉🏉 We're thrilled to share that Potchefstroom High School for Boys, Chris Nunu, has been chosen to represent the Leopards U16A team at this year’s Grant Khomo Week in Pretoria! This is a massive achievement for Chris and a proud moment for our school and wider community. Image: Potchefstroom High School for Boys What’s the Big Deal About Grant Khomo Week? If you’re not familiar with it, Grant Khomo Week is one of the most respected schoolboy rugby tournaments in the country. It’s where top U16 players from across South Africa come together to show what they’re made of. Many Springboks have started their journeys here. So, for Chris to make the squad? That’s no small thing. 👏 But Here’s the Catch
As with most representative sports, there are costs involved, travel, kit, accommodation and more. And that’s where we’re hoping you’ll come in. Chris needs our support to make this opportunity a reality. • Gimmies Herdenk Hemelvaartdag

  • PAWS Receives a Tsunami of Donations, Heroes and Heartfelt Thanks

The Potchefstroom Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is swimming in a sea of generosity this May! From school kids to fearless firefighters, and even a daring cat rescue, it’s been a busy and heartwarming time for the PAWS team and their furry residents. Baillie Park’s Big-Hearted Bunch Laerskool Baillie Park, gave it horns! Every mother, father, child and onnie chipped in to gather a mountain of pet food and goodies. The school’s tables overflowed with donations, from tins of Husky to crunchy dog chunks and snuggly blankets. A special shoutout to the organisers who pulled the project together with infectious enthusiasm! ALS and the Dirt-Digging Crew When PAWS needed help, ALS didn’t think twice. They rolled in with their JCB, digging trenches with the sort of gusto you usually see in a 5-year-old playing in the sandpit. Big thanks to ALS for getting stuck in and showing how serious they are about supporting the local animal community. Potch FPA: Burning for the Bugs PAWS got an unusual but vital helping hand from the Potch Fire Protection Association (FPA). They decided it was time to clear out those pesky bugs and brush at PAWS HQ with a well-coordinated controlled burn. The flames roared, the smoke billowed, and the bugs? Well, they packed their tiny bags and left. Thanks to the Potch FPA for keeping the property safe and clean. Little Eden Pre-School Potchefstroom: Lessons in Love Little Eden Pre-School kids learnt that giving can be just as fun as playing. They hosted a pawsome collection drive, donating everything from dog food to cat treats. The children’s visit to PAWS brought smiles to everyone, both human and animal! Blanket Blitz: Jenny Internet’s Drive Winter’s icy fingers can be tough on the kennels, but Jenny Internet Potchefstroom ran a “Blanket Drive” that would make any polar bear proud. Loads of thick, fluffy blankets poured in, promising cosy nights for the animals who call PAWS home. The Palm Tree Peril: Kitty’s 5-Hour Rescue In a scene straight out of an action movie, a determined rescue team (and a ridiculously long ladder) spent five hours coaxing a cat out of a palm tree. JP from Pest Police deserves a medal for going where no sane person usually goes. The cat’s fine, but we suspect it’s been grounded for life after this little adventure. JB Marks Municipality and Potch Gas Tech: Always Just a Call Away When things go south, it’s comforting to know that JB Marks Municipality and Potch Gas Tech & Appliances are only a phone call away. Their support during the palm tree rescue was invaluable – thanks for making sure PAWS never feels alone! PAWS wants to give the warmest of thank yous to everyone who pitched in – whether it was with food, blankets, toys or your time. Every little bit helps to make life brighter for the animals in their care. From digging dirt to saving cats in trees, this May was a real team effort. And PAWS couldn’t be more grateful.

  • Tokkie Skaakster Skitter Internasionaal!

Image: Laerskool Mooirivier Meer as ’n 1000 spelers!
