  • It Won’t Be Easy, But It Will Be Worth It: A Christian’s Journey

Life is full of challenges, and as Christians, we often find ourselves walking paths that are anything but smooth. From dealing with daily struggles to facing major life changes, it's clear that our journey of faith won't always be easy. Yet, despite the difficulties, we hold on to the hope and promise that it will be worth it. The Struggle is Real Let's be honest: life can be tough. Whether it’s balancing work, family, and personal time, dealing with financial stress, or navigating through relationships, each day presents its own set of challenges. As Christians, we aren’t exempt from these struggles. In fact, sometimes it feels like our faith adds an extra layer of complexity. We’re called to live differently, to love our enemies, and to turn the other cheek – none of which are easy tasks. Finding Strength in Faith In the face of these challenges, we have a source of strength that the world often overlooks: our faith in Jesus Christ. Philippians 4:13 tells us, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." This isn’t just a comforting verse to recite; it’s a powerful truth to live by. When the going gets tough, we can lean on Jesus for the strength we need to keep moving forward. Community and Support One of the beautiful aspects of being a Christian is the sense of community we share. We’re not meant to walk this journey alone. Galatians 6:2 encourages us to "carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ." Whether it’s through prayer groups, church services, or simply sharing a coffee with a fellow believer, we find support and encouragement from our Christian family. Walking in His Footsteps As we navigate our journey, it's essential to remember that Jesus Himself faced immense challenges. He experienced rejection, betrayal, and immense suffering, yet He persevered out of love for us. By following His example, we can find the courage to face our own trials. Jesus said in John 16:33, "In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." This assurance gives us hope and strength, knowing that if Jesus overcame the world, we too can overcome our struggles through Him. Daily Surrender and Trust Each day, we are invited to surrender our worries and burdens to God. It’s not about having all the answers or being perfect; it’s about trusting God’s plan and His timing. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." By placing our trust in God, we allow Him to work in our lives in ways we might never have imagined. This daily act of surrender brings peace and aligns our hearts with His will, making even the toughest journey a testament to His grace and love. The Bigger Picture When we’re in the thick of it, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. We might wonder why God allows us to face such hardships. But as Romans 8:28 reminds us, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." God has a plan, even if we can’t see it in the moment.  Our struggles are not in vain; they’re part of a greater purpose that we may only understand fully in hindsight or perhaps not until we reach eternity. The Reward The ultimate reward of our faith journey is, of course, eternal life with God. But even here on earth, we experience the fruits of our perseverance. James 1:12 says, "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him." The peace, joy, and fulfillment we gain from staying true to our faith, even when it’s hard, are immense. Embracing the Journey So, how do we embrace this journey with all its ups and downs? By keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). We need to trust that He is with us every step of the way, guiding us, supporting us, and loving us unconditionally.  It   won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. This mantra can carry us through the hardest times, reminding us that our labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). As Christians, we are called to a higher purpose, and while the road may be rocky, the destination is glorious. Let’s encourage one another to stay the course, to fight the good fight, and to finish the race with our faith intact. In the end, the challenges we face will pale in comparison to the joy we find in Christ.

  • Spiritual Talk Ep. 28 – The Heart of Missions with Pastor Ruaan Viljoen

In this powerful episode of Spiritual Talk , Pieter Conradie welcomes Pastor Ruaan Viljoen from Refresh Church Potchefstroom to share an extraordinary journey of faith, outreach, and real-life impact across Africa. The conversation takes viewers deep into the villages of Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique, places where modern comforts are few, but the spiritual hunger is immense. Into the Heart of Africa Pastor Ruaan describes his travels not as mere missions, but as heartfelt partnerships with local pastors and forgotten communities. Starting in 2019, his mission work has grown to include multiple visits per year. In these rural areas, basic resources are scarce, roads are nearly impassable, and in many places, the sight of a white visitor is still unfamiliar. Yet, in these very settings, Pastor Ruaan has witnessed some of the most profound encounters with God’s presence. “It’s not a performance. It’s not about comfort. It’s about meeting people exactly where they are—and showing them they are seen and loved.” Church Under Trees, Worship Without Walls One of the most touching parts of the episode is hearing how churches in remote areas are often nothing more than tree branches tied together and covered with grass. And yet, the worship is alive. Ruaan speaks of congregations with no instruments and no sound systems, yet the Spirit is tangible. He recounts moments where people walked over 30 kilometers  just to attend a service. Children cry at the unfamiliar sight of a foreigner, while adults are overwhelmed with gratitude just to be seen, prayed for, and visited. “These pastors are the true heroes. They remain when we leave. They lead, they care, and they often do it in total obscurity.” Witchcraft, Miracles & Redemption While visiting these communities, Ruaan has seen firsthand the battle between light and darkness. In one Mozambique village, a revival broke out after witch doctors had a supernatural encounter during a crusade, eventually leading them to lay down their charms and give their lives to Jesus. Today, many of those villagers are part of the local church, walking long distances every Sunday to worship together. He also shares healing testimonies: a woman sick for months, unable to find help through doctors, was completely healed after a prayer of faith. Living Among Them: Faith in Action Ruaan doesn’t stay in hotels. He sleeps in tents, cooks his own food, and bathes with bucket water, choosing to fully immerse himself in the village life. He brings not only the Word, but also clothing, school supplies, and farming support. Through donations from the Potchefstroom community and his church, they've helped establish a school for orphans, paid teachers’ salaries, and fed entire villages recovering from drought. “When you go, you're not just going to give. You're also going to be changed.” Building the Builders A key focus of the mission is to empower pastors, not just to host crusades, but to equip local leaders who remain after the teams leave. Ruaan hosts multi-day leadership retreats where pastors receive in-depth teaching, prayer, and spiritual strengthening. The results? Churches are growing. Communities are transforming. And new leaders are rising. Ready to Join the Journey? For those stirred by this mission, Ruaan shares that the next big outreach is planned for July . He invites anyone interested to connect through Refresh Church’s Facebook page or reach out via The Go-To Guy’s platforms. “It’s raw, it’s real, and it will wreck your heart in the best way.” 🟡 To get involved or support the mission, visit: 📌 www.facebook.com/RefreshChurchPotch   Or contact The Go-To Guy for more details. 📆 Tune in next week for Episode 29 #TheGoToGuy   #potchefstroom   #potchgazette   #stroomstories   #spiritualtalk   #MissionsInAfrica   #FaithInAction

  • Sportstroom Episode 18: Shaping the Future of Rugby with Bert Moolman

In this episode of Sportstroom, host Drikus welcomes Bert Moolman, the passionate chairperson behind Luiperd Welpie Rugby. With a decade of experience in Leopards rugby and the NWU Rugby Institute, Bert brings insightful reflections on grassroots development, child-friendly rugby structures, and how young players begin their rugby journey. From Rugbybal to Welpie Rugby The conversation kicks off with a nostalgic look at kids’ introductory rugby programs. Today, it's often called "Welpie Rugby," a name inspired by the Luiperd (leopard) mascot and other animal-themed youth teams in South Africa. Welpie Rugby is essentially the first step into the sport, where young children between ages 5 and 8 are introduced to the basic principles of rugby in a fun, non-contact environment. The game is based on tag rugby, where players wear belts with velcro tags that opponents must pull off instead of tackling. Keeping Tiny Players Focused Managing a field full of young children who’d rather pick grass than catch passes requires creativity. Bert explains that success lies in keeping groups small, making activities playful, and involving parents directly. “You’ll be amazed how a child can go from tying a shoelace to chasing the ball within seconds, it’s part of the magic.”   Parents play a key role not just in moral support, but also in coaching, organizing, and logistics. The more parents involved, the smaller the coaching groups, and the better the individual experience for the kids. “We often rotate parent-coaches between groups, so they’re not just coaching their own child and can learn alongside them.” Structure, Support & a Shared Coaching Vision Thanks to the foundations laid by NWU's Department of Sport Science, the Welpie program follows a structured coaching guide developed by professionals like Dr. Ratiff Broodryk and Pieter van den Berg in the early 2000s. This resource offers coaches a blueprint of age-appropriate drills focused on: ✔️ Listening to instructions (e.g. whistle = freeze) ✔️ Handling and passing skills ✔️ Understanding space and movement ✔️ Early teamwork principles “If you can teach a six-year-old to react to a whistle and follow a basic rule, you’ve already built a foundation for their entire sporting life.” 80 Kids, One Field, Unlimited Energy In Potchefstroom, Bert and his team currently manage a group of around 80 players, 40 Grade R and 40 Grade 1 children. These practices can feel like chaos, but with structure, creativity, and well-planned drills, every session turns into an opportunity for development. “You can’t arrive at practice and decide what to do on the fly, you need a plan, structure, and the flexibility to adapt to where the children are on the day.” Bert also emphasized that Welpie Rugby aligns with the winter school sports season, typically running from March to June, with about 5–6 practice or match days per year. The Goal: Fun, Learning, and Confidence The objective at this level isn’t winning, it’s creating a positive, confidence-building experience for every child. Games are short (5–7 minutes per half), with teams rotating to ensure all players get equal time on the field. Even though it’s tag rugby, some children instinctively want contact, often diving for a tag or trying to tackle. Coaches gently reinforce the rules and redirect their energy. “There’s always that one kid who wants to tackle, so we make it a learning moment. Because next year, they’ll transition into contact rugby anyway.” Community Spirit and Camaraderie Events like the rugby day at O’Lea Park or the Orifal Day in Viljoenskroon bring together schools from across Potchefstroom and surrounding towns like Klerksdorp and Zanddrift. These aren’t formal competitions, but rather opportunities for kids to play, parents to cheer, and communities to connect. “Seeing 80 barefoot kids on a frosty field at 7am… it reminds you why you do this.” Welpie rugby is also a gateway to future stars, helping children learn teamwork, movement, discipline, and focus—skills that stick with them even if they never play contact rugby later in life.  Developing Potential at Grassroots Level One of the most rewarding parts of coaching, Bert says, is watching the development unfold. “Some of these kids couldn’t catch a ball in February… by June, they’re passing, running, and smiling like champions.” Even if some players only bloom later in high school or beyond, early exposure to core rugby skills builds confidence and lays the foundation for growth, both on and off the field. The Life Lessons Hidden in Tag Rugby In closing, Bert highlights the mental and emotional growth  that Welpie Rugby instills: Listening skills  through whistle drills Emotional resilience  when things don’t go as planned Team values and respect  for coaches, opponents, and themselves Fun under structure , with rules that mimic the game they might grow into one day “Even the shy kid who hides behind mom’s leg on Day 1, by the fifth week, he’s the one shouting ‘pass the ball!’” Sportstroom – Your Weekly Sports Fix This episode of Sportstroom, presented by The Go-To Guy and hosted by Drikus, brings yet another heartfelt and informative look at local sports development in Potchefstroom. Stay tuned for the next episode where we dive into the journey of another inspiring sports figure  shaping the future of local athletes! #Sportstroom   #WelpieRugby   #GrassrootsRugby   #YouthDevelopment   #TagRugby   #Luiperds   #TheGoToGuy   #CommunitySport   #Potchefstroom

  • Sewage Infrastructure Challenges Emerge Across Potchefstroom

Numerous residents across Potchefstroom have reported ongoing sewage overflows in residential streets, yards, and public spaces. These reports span several suburbs and have prompted growing concern over the condition of the city's wastewater infrastructure. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Sewage Spillages: Locations, Impact & Dangers Problem areas identified by community members include: 167 & 169 Meadow Street  (erupting manholes) 205 Kock Street , Central 35–37 Jan Smuts Avenue 9 Hennie Bingle Drive , Van der Hoff Park 64 Parys Avenue , Baillie Park (residents unable to use toilets) Abraham Street , Promosa 8 Ben Pienaar Street 1 Drommedaris Street Residents state that in some cases, the problem has persisted for several months. In affected areas, they have experienced sewerage backups into bathrooms and stormwater mixing with wastewater during heavy rainfall. Some properties are reportedly flooded during rain due to blocked drainage or sewerage systems. Community Leaders and Councillors Respond Several ward councillors, including Johan Zaarbeek (Ward 4) and André Klopper (Ward 7), have publicly addressed the issue, stating that they have communicated with municipal departments regarding the recurring blockages and infrastructure strain. They reported that despite submitting photos and videos to relevant officials since January 2025, little progress has been observed in resolving the affected sites. Councillors have noted that increased urban development in the northern parts of Potchefstroom may be placing further strain on an already limited sewage treatment capacity. Rainwater inflow into the sewage system during storms has been highlighted as a contributing factor. Ward-based WhatsApp and Facebook groups have also been used by community members to share images, videos, and updates about sewage-related problems in their neighborhoods. Legal Correspondence Issued to the Municipality On 10 April 2025, attorney Andreas Peens issued a formal letter to the JB Marks Local Municipality and the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, acting on behalf of a group of residents identified as the JB Marks Concerned Citizens (JBMCC). The letter outlines the following: Concerns about continued sewage pollution in residential and ecologically sensitive areas Allegations of constitutional violations regarding health and environmental rights A demand for immediate cleanup and implementation of preventative measures A request for the municipality to submit a record of actions taken to address and prevent sewage issues The letter also notes that failure to respond or act by 12:00 on Wednesday, 16 April 2025  may lead to a legal application compelling the municipality  to fulfill its service delivery responsibilities. Read Full Pdf below: Environmental and Health Implications According to the legal correspondence and community reports, raw sewage has reportedly entered wetland zones and areas near the Mooi River, which lies close to the OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary. This raises concerns about possible environmental impact, although no official environmental assessment has been released to date. The letter further references the Botha pump station in Chris Hani Street, identified as one source where sewage has allegedly bypassed the normal reticulation system and entered natural areas. Next Steps and Community Action Residents involved in the initiative have been asked to submit timestamped images and videos to support the legal documentation. They are encouraged to continue reporting issues to their ward councillors and join organized local communication channels to remain informed about developments. In addition to the formal letter, a structured group effort—including possible collaboration with civil society organizations—aims to monitor municipal response and assess legal options going forward. Link to join:  Potch Sewage Alert WhatsApp Group As of the current reporting date, the JB Marks Local Municipality has not issued a public response to the complaints or legal letter. Efforts by residents and community leaders are ongoing, and legal proceedings may follow if remediation efforts are not undertaken. The situation continues to develop, and further updates will follow as official responses or actions are received. #TheGoToGuy   #potchefstroom   #potchgazette   #stroomstories   #sewage   #JBMarks

  • Spiritual Talk Ep. 27: Walking the Journey of Discipleship

In episode 27 of Spiritual Talk , Pieter Conradie welcomes back Werner Broodryk to explore a topic central to Christian life, but often misunderstood or overlooked: discipleship . While the word “discipleship” may feel familiar, this episode reminds us that its meaning runs deep. It’s not just a program or Bible study group. It’s about committing to walk with someone in love, truth, and transformation. It’s about choosing relationship over routine and showing up for someone, not once, but consistently. What is discipleship, really? At its core, discipleship means walking with others as they grow in Christ . It’s not just about evangelism or conversion, it’s the journey after  the “yes” to Jesus. It’s where real transformation happens, often in the mundane: through coffee conversations, emotional support, truth-telling, and steady presence. Werner explains: “When Jesus sent his disciples, He didn’t say ‘Go and make converts.’ He said, ‘Go and make disciples.’ That means showing people the way, helping them grow, fall, and get up again. It takes time, sacrifice, and love.” The Cost of Discipleship One of the most powerful parts of the episode is the honest discussion around the cost  of discipleship. It’s not free. It will cost you time, energy, emotion, and sometimes finances. It demands intentionality , sacrifice , and most of all, love . “Discipleship isn’t convenient, it’s costly. But so is love. God gave His Son while the world was still in sin. That’s the model of love and discipleship we’re called to.”  Pieter This sacrifice, however, bears eternal fruit. A life touched through real discipleship leads to another life touched, and so the Kingdom expands. Discipleship Means Showing a New Way to Live Discipleship doesn’t mean being perfect, it means being present . It means saying, “I’ve made mistakes too. Let me walk with you.”  Many young believers are left asking, “What’s next?”  after encountering Jesus. Without guidance, they may fall back into the habits of the world. That’s where the disciple-maker steps in. Werner shares how even things that once seemed enjoyable in a worldly life lose their appeal when we grow spiritually. “The things I did when I was lost, yes, they were fun. But now I find joy that lasts. Now I party differently. I surround myself with people who love Jesus. I live for something bigger.” The Role of Community and Consistency Discipleship thrives in community. This episode highlights the importance of walking with others , not just talking at them. It means meeting people where they are, just like Jesus met Zacchaeus, the woman at the well, or the leper. Discipleship happens in: Everyday conversations Coffee shop moments Honest prayers Parties that reflect joy, not just hype Holding someone accountable with love And yes, sometimes it means lovingly confronting a friend with truth, even when it’s hard. Because love doesn’t always say what’s easy; it says what’s necessary. Discipleship in a Fast-Paced, Shallow World One of the episode’s most compelling points is the contrast between the depth of discipleship  and the shallowness of modern life . AI, social media, and instant gratification have shortened our attention spans and made us expect quick fixes  in every area of life, including our faith. “We’re so used to fast results that we forget the spiritual life takes time. Growth takes roots. Discipleship takes relationship.” Werner Final Thoughts: Truth Over Trends Discipleship is about trading comfort  for calling , noise  for truth , and isolation  for relationship . It’s saying, “I’ll walk with you. I’ll listen. I’ll guide. I’ll show you how I follow Jesus, not perfectly, but wholeheartedly.” And in a world full of noise, that kind of love stands out. • SportStroom Ep.15: Prof. Du Toit Loots gesels oor gewigsverlies

In episode 14 sluit Prof. Du Toit Loots weer by ons aan, dié keer vir die tweede deel oor gewigsverlies, dieetneigings, en die wetenskap daaragter.  Prof . Du Toit Loots is nou al ’n bekende gesig by SportStroom.

#TheGoToGuy   #potchefstroom   #potchgazette   #stroomstories   #omgee

  • Winter Warmth, One Jar at a Time – Bafenyi Trust’s Heartwarming Project Near Potch

While most of us in Potch are already planning soup evenings and stocking up on fluffy blankets for winter, just 10 minutes down the road, the team at Bafenyi Trust is planning something far more meaningful – and they need your help. Bafenyi Trust, a local organisation based in the Ikageng and Promosa areas, is known for putting their hands and hearts where it matters most. This winter, they’ve kicked off a new project to help vulnerable families stay warm, fed, and cared for. And honestly – it’s the kind of project that makes you pause, dig through your sock drawer, and ask: “How many beanies does one really need?” Image : Facebook Bafenyi Trust The Wishlist: Warm Heads, Feet, and Bellies This year, Bafenyi’s Winter Project is aiming high – and rightfully so. They need: 950 kid’s beanies and socks , in school colours nogal – black, grey, blue, maroon, or green. 350 adult socks and blankets  to make sure no one is left out. 1,300 jars of soup  – yep, you read right. Soup in a jar, and no, not the kind from the fancy aisle at Woolies. So, What’s the Deal with the Soup Jars? These aren’t your average glass jars collecting dust in the cupboard. Each one is packed with: ½ cup rice ½ cup lentils ½ cup soup mix 1 stock cube (wrapped, please!) A packet of soup Basically, one humble jar can feed a family of four. And let’s be honest, if there’s one thing that brings people together during winter, it’s warm food and a full belly. Image : Facebook Bafenyi Trust The Deadline? It’s Closer Than You Think! All donations – whether it’s socks, beanies, or soup jars – need to be in by 2 May 2025 . That gives us just enough time to rally together and make it happen. And if you're wondering where to drop off or who to call, speak to Nala  at 082 611 5361 . She’s your go-to person for all things warm and fuzzy this winter. Why Bafenyi? Because they’re not just handing out items – they’re building community. Their focus goes deeper than just charity. Bafenyi Trust works to uplift people spiritually and practically, believing that the love and message of Jesus Christ brings lasting change, no matter someone’s circumstances. So ja, whether you’re a school teacher with spare classroom socks, a foodie with extra lentils, or just someone with a heart to help – this project is for you. And if you’re not sure where to start? Maybe begin with your own cupboard. Chances are, there’s a beanie in there that hasn’t seen the light of day since the 2021 cold front. Contact Details If you’d like to be part of this heartwarming initiative, whether through donations or volunteering, please get in touch with Nala  on 082 611 5361 . She’ll gladly guide you through how and where to donate. Every item, every jar, and every bit of kindness counts!
