Electric Atmosphere at Kick-Off The NWU Mahikeng Stadium was alive with energy as the NWU Eagles took to the field against perennial challengers, UP-Tuks. Fans packed the stands, waving purple banners and singing from the opening whistle. Among the players leading the Eagles’ charge was first-year BA Humanities student, Mlamleli Kokela , who balanced his defensive responsibilities with bursts of attacking play. His efforts reflected the determination of a side eager to claim all three points at home. Adding to the excitement, the clash was broadcast live on DStv SuperSport , bringing Varsity Football action from Mahikeng to audiences across the country. First Half: Intensity Without Goals From the opening minutes, both teams pressed high and moved the ball with relentless pace. Yesterday, the Carletonville Civic Centre hosted the much-anticipated State of the City Address 2025 (SOCA) , delivered by Executive Mayor Nozuko Best. The address reflected on the municipality’s challenges and progress while laying out a roadmap for Merafong’s future under the banner of Vision 2035 . Key themes included financial recovery, improved service delivery, youth empowerment, and long-term infrastructure renewal. Governance & Municipal Context Merafong City Local Municipality, which covers Carletonville, Fochville, Khutsong and surrounding areas, has been operating under a Section 154 provincial intervention  to strengthen governance and service delivery. In her address, Mayor Best acknowledged this oversight but stressed that recent reforms had begun to stabilise municipal operations, restoring confidence in the institution’s capacity to manage its own affairs. Financial Recovery & Municipal Turnaround A major highlight of the SOCA was Merafong’s financial recovery plan. Flora, goddess of spring, embodies growth, renewal, and cycles of vitality, while Venus represents love, beauty, agency, and transformation. Rather than existing in opposition, these archetypes are presented in harmony, weaving together myth, memory, and identity. Artistic Narrative Through textile art and storytelling, the exhibition stages the interplay of softness and strength, rootedness and volatility, nourishment and allure. Weaving serves as both medium and metaphor, symbolising connection across generations and the tension between delicacy and resilience. Central to the display is the exploration of the feminine body in its biological, emotional, and social dimensions. Philosophical Context The exhibition engages with reflections from voices such as Simone de Beauvoir, presenting womanhood as paradoxical, celebrated yet scrutinised, empowered yet policed. Raadslid André Klopper het bevestig dat munisipale pogings om die probleem op te los, misluk het weens gebrekkige toerusting . ’n Privaat kontrakteur is glo gekontak, maar terugvoer was steeds uitstaande teen die naweek. Op 17 Augustus het Klopper ’n formele skrywe aan die Munisipale Bestuurder  gerig waarin hy dringende optrede en langtermynbeplanning geëis het. Hy noem die toestand ’n volskaalse gesondheidskrisis  wat wetlike optrede kan regverdig indien geen oplossing volg nie. 🔥 Industriële Brand en Ingryping Op 19 Augustus om 23:40  het ’n groot brand uitgebreek in Pietersenstraat, Industria . Die brand het ontstaan in een winkel en vinnig versprei na aangrensende strukture. Twee winkels is vernietig, vier voertuie het uitgebrand, en ’n derde winkel se vensters het gebars. Die brandweer en SAPD was vinnig op die toneel. Die oorsaak blyk ’n elektriese fout te wees. 🛣️ Padongelukke en Vertraging Twee belangrike padinsidente is aangemeld: 15 Augustus : ’n Kop-aan-kop botsing op Parysweg naby Buffelshoek-polisiestasie. Alle nooddienste het gereageer en die toneel is teen 17:22 skoongemaak. 17 Augustus : ’n Ongeluk op die hoek van Albert Lethuli en Ventersdorpweg (R53). Alle dienste was op die toneel. A newly identified parasite has been officially named Latergator louisdupreezi  in honour of Prof Louis du Preez of North-West University. The organism was discovered by researchers in the United States and belongs to a family of ocular parasites that inhabit the eyes of freshwater turtles, hippopotamuses, and alligators. For decades, studies were conducted on crocodiles and alligators in both Africa and the United States to confirm the existence of the species. This young boy is not just any child - he’s a passionate, sport-loving youngster who was named Sportsman of the year  at his primary school last year. Sadly, he cannot currently participate in the sports he loves, as one hard knock to the head could cost him the last of his hearing. Specialists have agreed to help, but the costs are staggering. Beyond multiple surgeries, he will also require advanced hearing devices, similar to cochlear implants, to restore and protect his ability to hear. For this boy, these procedures are more than medical necessities, they are the chance to live a full life, to hear his friends, to learn in class, and to once again play the sports he loves. The Roots Venue in Potchefstroom will be hosting a Dahlia Workshop on 6 September 2025 from 10:00 to 12:30.
