- NWU Among SA’s Top Eight: International Rankings Reflect Strategic Growth
In a significant nod to its academic vision and innovation, the North-West University (NWU) has secured its position among the top eight universities in South Africa, according to the 2026 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings. This recognition not only reaffirms NWU’s reputation for global competitiveness but also signals the effectiveness of its forward-thinking strategy to remain relevant and impactful on the global higher education stage. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Strategic Momentum Backed by Global Recognition The latest QS rankings, released on 19 June 2025, assessed 1,501 universities from 105 countries. NWU’s placement among South Africa’s top institutions, and in the top 16 universities on the African continent, speaks to its ongoing efforts to align academic output with global standards. The rankings measure a variety of indicators including academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, employer reputation, international diversity, and sustainability, with the latter two representing growing priorities in the international academic landscape. QS remains one of the few global rankings to place dedicated emphasis on graduate employability and environmental responsibility, areas in which NWU is increasingly investing effort and innovation. Flagship Academic Innovations Driving Reputation Among the most prominent developments that may have influenced NWU’s improved performance are the establishment and planning of several new academic schools. These include the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine, a proposed School of Mines and Mining Engineering, and a School of Veterinary Sciences. These future-fit academic centres are part of a broader institutional strategy, “Taking the NWU Forward: 2024 and Beyond,” which outlines key pillars such as internationalisation, partnerships, and societal impact. Through these targeted initiatives, the university aims to deliver research and education that speak directly to global challenges while fostering cross-sectoral collaboration. Image: NWU - North-West University Subject Strengths and Additional Rankings In addition to the overall QS ranking, NWU’s subject-specific performance has also garnered attention. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject (released in March 2025), four subject areas placed in the global top 850: Agriculture and Forestry (301–350), Environmental Sciences (501–550), Physics (551–600), and Medicine (701–850). These figures underscore NWU’s growing niche in applied and scientific fields, especially in areas relevant to sustainable development and public health. Furthermore, the Global 2000 list released by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) earlier this month placed NWU in the top 4.1% of universities worldwide, further supporting its rising international stature. Leadership Perspective on Academic Excellence Prof Linda du Plessis, NWU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, attributed the university’s ranking success to a strategic alignment between academic focus and global trends. According to her, the rankings validate the contributions of NWU’s academic community and the relevance of its strategic priorities, which include leadership for results, systems thinking, private-public partnerships, and advancing the digital and green economy. The recently introduced QS International Student Diversity Indicator also sheds light on NWU’s growing appeal beyond South Africa’s borders, although it currently ranks in the 801+ category for this metric, suggesting room for further growth in global student engagement. Understanding the QS World University Rankings Methodology The QS World University Rankings evaluate institutions based on several indicators: Academic Reputation (40%) : Assessed through a global survey of academics. Employer Reputation (10%) : Based on employer feedback regarding graduate employability Faculty/Student Ratio (20%) : Measures teaching capacity. topuniversities.com Citations per Faculty (20%) : Evaluates research impact. International Faculty Ratio (5%) and International Student Ratio (5%) : Assess diversity. In 2026, QS introduced additional metrics: International Research Network (5%) : Evaluates global research collaborations. Employment Outcomes (5%) : Measures graduate employability. topuniversities.com Sustainability (5%) : Assesses environmental and social impact. nwu.ac.za These comprehensive criteria provide a holistic view of an institution's performance. A Forward-Looking Institution NWU's ascent in global rankings is a testament to its strategic vision and dedication to excellence. By aligning its initiatives with global standards and societal needs, the university is poised to continue its upward trajectory, contributing significantly to both national development and the global academic community. - Potch Trauma Recovery: Helping Trauma Survivors Thrive
Trauma can cast a long shadow, but healing and hope are within reach. Potch Trauma Recovery is dedicated to guiding individuals out of the darkness of their past and into a life of renewed strength. Image : Facebook Potch Trauma Recovery Potch Trauma Recovery’s approach is rooted in the belief that nobody should remain a prisoner of their pain. Its core vision - helping people not just survive, but truly thrive - shines through in every service offered. Potch Trauma Recovery supports children, teens, and adults (ages 5 and up) from all walks of life. Clients include: Survivors of abuse (childhood abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault) Accident and disaster victims (those who have experienced life-threatening events) Military personnel and veterans (struggling with combat stress or PTSD) First responders and healthcare workers (impacted by trauma in the line of duty) Others coping with traumatic loss, illness, or violence No matter the source of trauma, whether a single harrowing event or prolonged adversity, Potch Trauma Recovery offers a safe haven for healing, where every story is heard and no one has to heal alone. In this supportive atmosphere, many who once felt broken by trauma begin to find hope and direction again. Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR): A Rapid, Focused Approach At the heart of Potch Trauma Recovery is a technique called Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR). TIR is a focused method for helping individuals release the intense emotional charge attached to painful memories . In practice, it guides a person to gently revisit a traumatic incident in a secure environment, free of judgment . Through guided recollection, the painful event is gradually stripped of its power. Eventually, the traumatic memory loses its grip, and the individual can recall the event without being overwhelmed. TIR is also remarkably efficient: unlike traditional therapy that might require months of weekly sessions, it often leads to significant improvement within just a few sessions . This approach has proven effective across a wide range of trauma types, from one-time accidents to complex, repeated traumas , making it a versatile tool for recovery. At Potch Trauma Recovery, most adults need only one or two sessions to feel noticeable relief. Children typically require at least three shorter sessions, since building trust is especially important for younger clients. This brief, targeted intervention is a unique alternative to long-term therapy, empowering clients to confront and resolve trauma at their own pace. The result is often a dramatic reduction in trauma symptoms (such as nightmares, flashbacks or anxiety), accompanied by a return of calm and control in one’s life. Image : Facebook Potch Trauma Recovery A Focus on Healing, Not Diagnoses or Labels Potch Trauma Recovery maintains a clear focus on trauma healing and does not provide medical diagnoses or psychiatric treatment. Every client is approached as a person seeking relief and recovery, not as a “disorder.” If someone’s needs fall outside the scope of this work (for example, requiring medical care or specialized mental health support), they are referred to an appropriate professional to ensure their well-being. As an independent practice operating outside of medical aid schemes, Potch Trauma Recovery offers privately paid sessions. This straightforward arrangement keeps the focus on practical progress: resolving traumatic incidents and rebuilding strength without the need for clinical labels or excessive paperwork. The atmosphere is personal, confidential, and stigma-free, centered on empowerment and genuine recovery. Accessible Support – In Potchefstroom and Beyond To make services accessible, Potch Trauma Recovery provides both in-person and online sessions. In-person appointments take place in Potchefstroom in a calm, comfortable setting. For those far away or who prefer remote support, virtual sessions via Zoom are available - distance is no barrier to healing. Every client receives the same compassionate care and privacy, whether connecting online or sitting in the practitioner’s office. Image : Facebook Potch Trauma Recovery “Don’t Just Survive – Thrive”: An Empowering Philosophy Above all, Potch Trauma Recovery believes in the resilience of the human spirit. Its motto, “Don’t just survive – thrive,” captures an empowering philosophy: recovering from trauma is not only about ending pain, but about reclaiming a full and meaningful life. The practitioner emphasizes “people conservation”, caring for one’s own well-being as diligently as we care for our environment, on the premise that healing ourselves gives us the strength to support others. Modern research reinforces the importance of this healing focus, as unresolved trauma has been linked to serious long-term health issues if left unaddressed . Seeking help is therefore not a sign of weakness but a courageous step toward a healthier future. People also have an innate capacity to recover when given the right support , and Potch Trauma Recovery strives to provide exactly that. Every client is met with empathy, respect, and the unwavering belief that no matter how deep the wounds, there is a path to recovery and growth. In this nurturing environment, survivors of trauma can rediscover their inner strength and hope. Potch Trauma Recovery encourages anyone living in the shadow of past events to take that brave first step toward healing. With a focused and compassionate process, even burdens that once felt insurmountable can be lifted. Clients emerge not only with relief from their past, but with a renewed sense of empowerment, ready to move forward and truly thrive after trauma.

- DA Raises Alarm Over Illegal Electricity Connections in Potchefstroom
Simmering tension in informal settlements such as Promosa, Mohadin, and Ikageng has once again reached boiling point. The catalyst: a persistent and dangerous problem, illegal electricity connections and rampant cable theft. These underground practices, while not new, have recently escalated to the point where lives are reportedly at risk and local authorities are being forced to reckon with the consequences. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The Democratic Alliance (DA), via Councillor Glenville Fransman, has issued a formal call for urgent action. Addressing municipal leaders and the South African Police Service (SAPS), the DA has underscored the severity of the situation and demanded a clear, immediate response. Flashpoint in the Settlements The urgency of the matter was underscored on June 17th, when tensions in Baipei, Rockville, Mohadin, and Hashtag informal settlements erupted into confrontation. Frustrated residents, some reportedly assaulted during protests, appealed directly to the mayor and SAPS officials for intervention. Their message was clear: the status quo is untenable. These illegal connections are not just a financial or regulatory concern, they represent a tangible threat. Exposed wires and unregulated power setups snake through dense residential areas, heightening the risk of electrocution, fires, and fatalities. According to Councillor Fransman, the issue has plagued the municipality for over two years, with certain areas, including along Dassierand Road en route to the Promosa dumpsite, being visibly and dangerously compromised. The Toll on Infrastructure and Investment While the immediate concern is public safety, the ramifications extend further. Eskom, already under significant pressure, faces increased strain from unauthorized power usage and the costly replacement of stolen cables. This not only burdens the utility’s operational capacity but also has financial consequences that could affect all paying customers through future tariff hikes. From an economic perspective, the DA warns that inaction may deter business investment in the region. Areas plagued by instability, unsafe infrastructure, and inconsistent power supply are unlikely to attract new commercial activity. The ripple effect, therefore, is not just local, it touches on the broader economic vitality of Potchefstroom. A Call for a Plan, Not Just Promises In response to the crisis, the DA has submitted a formal request to the Executive Mayor, the Municipal Manager, and SAPS leadership for a coordinated plan of action. Their call is simple: formulate and implement a strategy to ensure reliable, legal electricity access for residents of Promosa and Mohadin, and clamp down on cable theft. While the issue itself is not new, the scale and danger appear to have intensified, prompting renewed political and civic attention. The DA has framed its intervention not as a party-political move, but as a necessary step in restoring what they call the “rights and dignity” of Potchefstroom’s residents. Not the Final Word Although the DA’s stance is firm and their demands urgent, this is not expected to be the final chapter in the ongoing electricity saga. Councillor Fransman made it clear that the party intends to persist until the municipality demonstrates tangible progress. For now, the focus remains on ensuring safety and stability in Potchefstroom’s vulnerable communities. Exit Note The situation in Potchefstroom highlights a complex intersection of poverty, infrastructure, and governance. As residents grapple with the daily risks posed by illegal connections, and political actors push for institutional responses, the path forward demands cooperation, urgency, and a commitment to long-term solutions. Whether the municipality will rise to meet this challenge remains to be seen, but the clock is ticking. - Ever Wonder What This Means? Injury Severity Codes and Emergency Abbreviations Explained
In the age of instant communication, it's common to see quick incident reports on community WhatsApp groups or neighborhood forums when accidents or emergencies happen. Often, these reports use brief codes or abbreviations, like “P1 patient with ROSC, HEMS activated” , which can leave the average person puzzled. These injury severity codes and emergency medical abbreviations aren’t meant to be secret; they are a shorthand used by first responders to convey crucial information quickly. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations In this article, we’ll break down what these terms mean, so you can understand the severity of incidents being reported and the urgency of the response. Knowing these codes can help you stay informed and calm during local emergencies, and better interpret urgent messages that use this specialized language patient.info . Severity of Injuries (Priority Codes P1–P4, DOA) When paramedics or emergency personnel assess an incident, they assign each victim a priority level. The “P” stands for Priority , indicating how urgent the person's injuries are. This system helps responders decide who needs immediate life-saving care and how to allocate resources efficiently patient.info . Here are the common priority codes and what they signify: P1: Critical injuries Priority 1 is the most urgent category. It means the person has life-threatening injuries and needs immediate medical intervention . These are often termed “red code” or critical patients. Examples include people who are unresponsive or in shock, have severe bleeding, have difficulty breathing, or other injuries that are immediately life-threatening . A P1 patient requires rapid treatment and transport (often within minutes) because their survival is at stake. P2: Serious injuries Priority 2 indicates serious but not immediately life-threatening injuries . These patients are in stable condition for the moment, but still need significant medical care as soon as possible (often within a couple of hours). For instance, a person with a major fracture, a concussion who is conscious, or moderate trauma would be P2, urgent, but not on the brink of death. They might be described as “yellow code” in some systems, meaning they’ll receive treatment right after any P1 patients . P3: Minor injuries Priority 3 is used for victims with minor injuries that are not life-threatening . Often called the “walking wounded,” these individuals can walk or function relatively okay despite injuries, and their treatment can be safely delayed until more critical patients are cared for . Typical P3 cases ( “green code” ) might include cuts, scrapes, or slight sprains, injuries where basic first aid is enough for the short term . They will eventually get medical attention, but after P1 and P2 patients since their condition is stable. P4: Deceased Priority 4 is reserved for those who unfortunately did not survive the incident. In emergency triage, a P4 patient is one who has no signs of life and is beyond help . This category ensures that limited medical resources aren’t used on someone who cannot be revived. P4 victims are often tagged with a black (or sometimes blue) code indicating death . In community incident reports, seeing “P4” simply means a person was found deceased at the scene. It’s a grim code, but it quickly communicates the outcome. DOA: Dead on Arrival DOA stands for Dead on Arrival , meaning the person was found already dead by the time professional medical help arrived. In other words, despite the emergency response, the patient could not be resuscitated at the scene or upon arrival at the hospital. A DOA status often accompanies a P4 code in reports. For example, a message might say a victim was “P4/DOA,” underscoring that the individual had no pulse or breathing when first responders reached them. Essentially, DOA is the formal way to indicate that all life-saving measures were unsuccessful, the patient was unsalvageable when help came . Understanding these priority codes (P1–P4 and DOA) is important because it tells you the scale of an incident. For instance, an accident report stating there are two P1s and three P3s at the scene means two people are critically hurt and three have minor injuries. This lets the community know how serious the situation is. Emergency services use these codes to coordinate response: P1 cases get ambulances and advanced care immediately, P2 cases get prompt attention after that, and so on . Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Abbreviations for Serious Emergencies (HEMS, RESUS, ROSC) Beyond the priority numbers, you might also notice some abbreviations in urgent reports, especially when the injuries are severe. These shorthand terms describe special emergency resources or medical procedures. Here are a few common ones: HEMS: Helicopter Emergency Medical Services HEMS refers to emergency medical helicopters and their crew . If you see “HEMS activated” or “HEMS dispatched” in a message, it means a medical helicopter (air ambulance) was called in for the incident. Helicopter Emergency Medical Services are typically used in life-and-death situations: for example, when a patient is in critical condition (P1) and needs rapid transport to a trauma center, or if the accident happened in a location difficult to reach by road. HEMS teams include specially trained flight medics or physicians who can start advanced treatment en route. The decision to call a helicopter underscores that the injuries are very serious or time-sensitive, getting the patient to a hospital quickly could make the difference between life and death . RESUS: Resuscitation (CPR) Resus is short for resuscitation , commonly meaning attempts to revive someone from cardiac arrest, in practice, performing CPR ( cardiopulmonary resuscitation ) on them . When a message says a patient is “under resus” or “resuscitated,” it indicates that emergency responders are actively trying to restart the person’s heart or breathing . This usually involves CPR chest compressions, artificial ventilation, and possibly defibrillation. For example, if someone was pulled from a near-drowning or had a cardiac arrest after an accident, paramedics might report “RESUS ongoing” . Essentially, it’s the critical effort to bring a patient back from the brink of death. Seeing this term in an incident report tells you that the situation was very dire, the person had no pulse and needed lifesaving measures immediately . ROSC: Return of Spontaneous Circulation ROSC is a hopeful term. It stands for Return of Spontaneous Circulation , which is medical speak for getting a pulse back after a cardiac arrest. In other words, the resuscitation attempt was successful , the patient’s heart is beating again on its own (even if weakly). Achieving ROSC is a major positive sign, indicating that blood circulation has been restored following CPR. For instance, an update might read “CPR in progress, ROSC achieved after 5 minutes.” This tells readers that the patient, who had no heartbeat, regained circulation due to the responders’ efforts . However, ROSC is just the first step; the patient will still be in critical condition and needs hospital care. In community alerts, mentioning ROSC is basically sharing a bit of good news in a bad situation, it means the person was brought back from clinical death, at least for now. Paramedics use this term to communicate outcomes of a resuscitation: no ROSC means the patient stayed in cardiac arrest (which could lead to a DOA), whereas ROSC means the immediate crisis (loss of pulse) was reversed . Image: The Go-To Guy Creations In times of emergency, information travels fast, and being familiar with these codes and abbreviations can make that information more understandable. When you read an incident update that uses terms like P1 or ROSC, you’ll now know it’s describing how critical the injuries are and what actions the medics are taking. Understanding these injury severity codes and emergency acronyms lets you grasp the urgency of a situation at a glance , which is valuable for staying calm and making informed decisions. It also gives you a deeper appreciation for the work of emergency responders, every code represents a level of care and urgency behind the scenes. So the next time an alert flashes across your community group about a “P1 patient with HEMS en route” , you’ll recognize that it’s a life-threatening case and that help is literally on the way from the sky. Knowledge of these terms empowers you as a community member to respond appropriately (even if that just means avoiding an area or not spreading unverified rumors) and to feel more connected to the emergency efforts. In critical moments, clarity is key, and these codes are there to provide exactly that. Stay informed, stay safe, and share the knowledge with others who might have also wondered, “What does this mean?” when those urgent messages pop up. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #firstresponders #safety

- Big Power, Big Savings: 4 Ford Deals You Should Know About
If you’ve been eyeing a solid upgrade for your next bakkie or SUV, this might just be the nudge you needed. Daly Ford in Potchefstroom is running a set of pretty serious deals on a few standout models and they’re not just throwing in floor mats and calling it a bargain. These are proper discounts on proper vehicles. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer. 1. Ranger Wildtrak Bi-Turbo 4×2 – R100,000 Off Let’s be honest, when you think “bakkie with brains and brawn,” the Wildtrak usually comes to mind. It’s stylish without being flashy, and it’s smart without trying to out-tech a spaceship. Right now, Daly Ford has knocked the price from R895,000 down to R795,000. That’s a solid R100k off. You’re still getting that beefy Bi-Turbo engine with 154kW and 500Nm, plus tech like a big 12-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and adaptive cruise control. And yes, it still looks mean in your rearview mirror. Also, a 6-year/90,000km service plan is included, which is one less thing to stress about later. 2. Ranger XL SuperCab 6AT 4×2 – Now R519,900 This one’s all about practical value. It doesn’t try to be flashy. But what it does, it does well, pulling, hauling, and just being tough day in and day out. It’s powered by the 2.0L Single Turbo engine (125kW/405Nm), paired with a 6-speed auto that feels nicely refined for something in this price bracket. The interior is comfortable, and the SYNC® 4A system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard. Basically, you can throw it into your work schedule or road trip plans without worrying if it’s up to it. Oh, and you’re saving R65,100 off the usual price. 3. Everest XLT Bi-Turbo 4x2 – Now R847,000 Here’s the family option that doesn’t feel like a compromise. The Everest has been getting better with each version, and this Bi-Turbo 4x2 model strikes that perfect balance between weekday runaround and weekend getaway rig. It’s spacious, clean-looking inside, and comes with plenty of useful features, blind spot monitoring, dual-zone climate control, wireless tech, the works. The same gutsy engine from the Wildtrak powers this SUV, which means it’s got plenty of go when loaded up with kids, gear, or whatever adventure you’re plotting next. You’re saving R95,000 here, which can cover a lot of fuel or gear for the road ahead. 4. Everest Platinum V6 4x4 – Down to R1,259,000 If you’ve ever dreamed of cruising in a full-size SUV that doesn’t look out of place at a bush lodge or a business event, this is it. The Everest Platinum is about as luxurious as Ford gets. A big 3.0L V6 diesel under the hood, full-time 4WD, leather seats (heated and cooled), panoramic roof, 12-inch digital cluster… it’s stacked. Now priced R50,000 below usual, this isn’t your average everyday deal, but if you’re already shopping at this level, a R50k saving is well worth considering. These aren’t just “get-you-on-the-lot” specials. Each model is backed with a 6-year/90,000km service plan , and there’s a genuine sense of value here, whether you’re looking for work-ready muscle, something for the family, or just a big upgrade. Worth noting: These offers are only around for a limited time. And let’s be honest, good deals on Fords like these don’t come up every day. If any of these caught your eye, it might be the perfect time to book a test drive before the clock runs out. 📍 Where to check it out?
