With powerful performances across multiple categories, they left the crowd in awe and judges impressed. • Potch Riders Tackle the Karkloof Classic with Guts and Grit!

🚵‍♀🌲🚵‍♀🌲🚵‍♀🌲🚵‍♀🌲🚵‍♀🌲 Sunday, 25 May 2025 we saw the Sappi Karkloof Classic Trail Festival host the SA MTB Marathon Championships, and two brave riders from Potch showed up and took on the mountain, head-on.This wasn’t your average Sunday cycle. It was steep, rough, and packed with twisty single-track trails, the kind where your handlebars just squeeze through 😳. Image: Hoërskool.Ferdinand Postma.High School 🟢 Ilne: 41.4 km of Pure Determination Ilne took on the 41.4 km route , which is more or less the distance from Potch to Klerksdorp, but here’s the kicker: it came with a 1335 m elevation gain . That’s the height of 445 floors . Yes, like climbing a skyscraper. On a mountain bike. In the mud. And probably with a few tree roots thrown in for good measure 🌳💪. It wasn’t just about distance, it was about staying focused, keeping balance, and digging deep on those brutal climbs. 🔴 Divan: Going Bigger with 61.6 km and 1933 m Up! Divan didn’t hold back. He took on the 61.6 km route , with a whopping 1933 m elevation gain . That’s like riding your bike up 644 floors ! This route demanded everything: fitness, mental toughness, and sharp technical skills. The trail was littered with tight, narrow paths and serious climbs, the kind that test even seasoned mountain bikers. And still, he kept going. That’s commitment. 🎯 More Than a Race — It’s Mountain Biking in Its Purest Form Both routes were built for those who love real mountain biking: Narrow, winding singletrack sections Long, steep climbs Proper trail challenges that push your body and mind Throw in some KZN forest magic, sweeping views, and fresh mountain air, and you’ve got a day on the bike that hits different. 💬 Respect Where It’s Due Ilne and Divan showed up and gave it their all. No fuss. Just legs turning, wheels grinding, and hearts pounding up those hills. That’s what mountain biking’s all about. So here’s to our local riders who flew the Potch flag high this weekend. You’ve made us proud out there on the trails! 🇿🇦🔥 🚵‍♀🌲🚵‍♀🌲🚵‍♀🌲🚵‍♀🌲🚵‍♀🌲 #MTBSA #KarkloofClassic #TrailFestival2025 #MTBLife #SingleTrackHeaven #SappiKarkloof #ChallengeAccepted #PotchOnWheels

  • Kry jou by Pad.langs

The Go-To Guy het besoek af gaan lê by die nuutste koffiewinkel in Potchefstroom - Pad.langs. Dié is ‘n koffiewinkel wat my gereeld gaan sien.

Ward Councillor invites aspiring athletes to try out for the Cashibe Mayoral Cup The residents of Ward 09 better dust off their takkies and shake off the rust, because trials for both netball and soccer are officially on the calendar. Cllr Mantwa Matilda Kasale is calling on all interested locals to come and show what they’ve got on the court and the field. The trials are in preparation for the upcoming Cashibe Mayoral Cup, and if the name sounds fancy, it’s because it probably is. Details for the Day Date: Saturday, 31 May 2025 Time: 09:00 sharp (yes, that means be early, or risk doing warmups twice) Venue: Ikageng Stadium (the place where dreams are made… or at least tested) Whether you're a sharpshooter under the hoop or fancy yourself the next Bafana star, this is your chance to make the team. Got Questions? Contact the Right People If you’ve got questions or you’re wondering where to park your mom’s car, give the organisers a ring: Netball Contact: Thabiso – 071-453-9943 Soccer Contact: Potso Mogapi – 081-439-2190 For anything else (like whether there'll be cooldrinks), you can reach out directly to Cllr. Mantwa Kasale on 083-644-9479. No Experience Necessary – Just Bring Energy There’s no mention of a dress code, but let’s assume boots and bibs are better than flip-flops and jeans. The invite is open to “all interested individuals”, which sounds like everyone from the local hotshot to that one uncle who’s still convinced he could’ve gone pro. So, if you think you’ve got what it takes, or if you just want to be part of the action, Ikageng Stadium is the place to be on the 31st. Just try not to pull a hamstring.

Residents of Potchefstroom keen to get their hands (literally) into something life-saving might want to mark their calendars for a practical and certified First Aid Level 1 training happening on Saturday, 31 May 2025. No, it’s not a music festival, but it might just help you save a life at one. What You’ll Learn (Besides Not Panicking) Organised by PR Training and SHE Consultants, this one-day course promises to teach you more than just how to apply a plaster. Attendees will be walked through the basics of CPR for adults, children, and infants, how to deal with burns, injuries, and the delightful topic of choking and cardiac arrests. It’s everything you wish you’d learned at school instead of the recorder. The workshop runs from 08:00 to 16:00 in the Vida e Caffe boardroom, tucked away on 46 Christo Meyer Street, Vanderhoffpark, Potchefstroom. Why You Might Want to Show Up There’s more to this than just ticking a box. This course is Department of Labour certified, and you’ll receive a certificate once you survive the (very safe) day. Booking Details (Bring Your Own Enthusiasm) At R850 per person, the course isn’t free, but then again, neither is an ambulance ride. Limited spots are available, so early booking is recommended, not because it's a Black Friday sale, but because saving lives tends to be popular. • A Week in Focus: Empowerment and Compliance Take Centre Stage at JB Marks

This past week, the JB Marks Local Municipality rolled out two impactful initiatives aimed at improving public health, economic opportunity, and business development. From the heart of the bustling taxi rank to the strategic conversations at Govan Mbeki Hall, the municipality demonstrated its commitment to strengthening both informal trading and local tourism ecosystems. Image: JB Marks Local Municipality Official-Page 21 May: Food Handling Roadshow Brings Guidance to Street Traders On Wednesday, 21 May 2025, the Department of Local Economic Development  hosted a Food Handling Informal Traders Roadshow , setting up direct engagement with vendors operating at the Potchefstroom taxi rank. The initiative was a multi-department collaboration involving the Fire Department , Traffic Department , and the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Health Department . Image: JB Marks Local Municipality Official-Page Traders were not only given vital information on environmental and health standards , but also one-on-one attention from officials who visited individual food stalls. The sessions included practical guidance on: Fire safety protocols , Health compliance for food preparation , and Road safety measures  for trading in high-traffic public spaces. Importantly, officials offered corrective measures  rather than penalties, ensuring that traders had the chance to improve operations before formal permit issuance  begins. This people-first approach aims to improve public health while supporting the sustainability of informal businesses, many of which are essential for local employment and food security. Image: JB Marks Local Municipality Official-Page Image: JB Marks Local Municipality Official-Page 22 May: Empowering SMMEs Through Tourism at Information Workshop A day later, on 22 May, Govan Mbeki Hall  came alive with the voices of entrepreneurs, stakeholders, and municipal officials during an Information Sharing Session Workshop  organized in partnership with the Potchefstroom Tourism Association . Image: JB Marks Local Municipality Official-Page This event placed a spotlight on Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs)  and their role in regional tourism development. With facilitation and presentations by SEDA, DEDECT , and the North West Provincial Treasury , the workshop emphasized: Strategic partnerships between local government and tourism stakeholders. How businesses can harness authenticity and local culture to attract tourists. Techniques for product promotion  and visibility in a competitive market. Real-time networking opportunities for cross-sector collabo ration. Image: JB Marks Local Municipality Official-Page By equipping SMMEs with tools for growth and visibility, the municipality is aligning with broader economic goals of creating a more vibrant, sustainable, and attractive tourism sector  in JB Marks. Looking Ahead These two initiatives, focused on both compliance education for informal traders  and business growth for formal entrepreneurs , reflect the municipality’s effort to nurture an inclusive economic environment. The targeted, hands-on approach used this week highlights a shift from mere policy-making to grassroots-level implementation, where people are informed, equipped, and empowered. As JB Marks continues to roll out similar interventions, it remains to be seen how these efforts translate into long-term results, but the foundation for cooperation and community upliftment is clearly being laid. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #JBMarksLocalBusiness #SMMEGrowth #EmpowermentInAction

Wanda, oorspronklik bekend as Fort, was aanvanklik bedoel as 'n manskoshuis. • Vordering by Vyfhoek Reservoir / Progress Report Vyfhoek Reservoir

Vyfhoek Reservoir Works A major water infrastructure upgrade at the Vyfhoek Reservoir in Potchefstroom led to a planned water outage from 20 to 22 May 2025. The JB Marks Local Municipality initiated a complex operation to replace outdated valves and connect new pipelines. Despite early preparation and a full reservoir, various technical and safety challenges resulted in prolonged disruptions, requiring logistical adaptations and community coordination. 📅 Tuesday, 20 May 2025 Work commenced on the aging valves at the Vyfhoek Reservoir. The infrastructure, several decades old, was in poor condition and in urgent need of replacement. Excavations were completed and the first coupling was prepared. By 15:05 , progress was on track. 📅 Wednesday, 21 May 2025 The reservoir was filled to capacity before the work began. However, no new water was pumped from the purification plant, leading to dry taps by midday. 🔧 The first coupling was completed by 13:18 , and work on the second began around 16:15 . By 21:30 , contractors continued working in freezing temperatures under lights. 📅 Thursday, 22 May 2025 By 06:35 , the second coupling was still incomplete, and pumping could not begin. The reservoir had to reach at least 20% capacity before water could be restored to households. A trench wall collapsed in the early morning, causing a pause in operations. Work resumed later under safe conditions. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Water tankers were deployed to the following locations: Ferdies Pick & Pay Van der Hoffpark Albuquerque Spur (Waterberry) Spar Baillie Park (13:15) Vyfhoek Centre (13:45) The Dutch Reformed Church Potchefstroom-East , on the corner of Burger and Lanyon Streets, also opened its taps to the public until 16:00 . By 13:20 , final tightening and pipe stabilization were underway, with plans to start pumping to the reservoir by 15:00 . Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Overview and Appreciation This large-scale operation demanded technical skill, endurance, and cooperation. Crews worked day and night, often in difficult weather conditions. Residents are thanked for their patience and community spirit during the outage.
