  • eBikes in Potchefstroom

    Recently we travelled to the USA and New York specifically, and as we walked the busy streets of this Megacity we were pleasantly surprised to find bicycles that you could rent by simply scanning a QR Code on your phone, money deducted of your Credit card or Paypal and of you went. We tried the service, got a bicycle and decided to go for a majestic ride all along the Hudson river where Captain Sully famously "landed" his aircraft without any deaths. The ride was glorious as we do not often get the time in Potchefstroom to just jump on our bicycles, yet our legs started feeling the long journey we took and also I have to say our backsides were not used to the saddle of a bicycle seat, and then the journey started becoming hard work instead of actually enjoying the outdoor ride, and we decided we had to make a different plan as we still wanted to cycle through the whole of Manhattan, and thats when we discovered the best thing since sliced bread, eBikes. Similar to the rental bicycles we had you could rent an eBike, which had a battery and allowed you to have a more pleasant and significantly faster cycle, without feeling that you are training for the Tour de France, it was a glorious experience. During our trip and cycle we also chatted about the things that were in New York that should actually be, and could actually be in Potchefstroom, and definitely the food-stalls at every corner serving delicious food was one of them, the other was these eBikes that we were riding on. This all rounder is ideal for long rides, commutes & even trail riding. It’s very versatile and an excellent choice as a daily rider.   • Pothole to Hellhole Syndrome

    Well the above title word on Hellhole could be replaced by another word also called something hole, yet I will leave that to the imagination to complete as we are actually a decent bunch, and mom would give us soap in the mouth if we do not behave. Open up any community page, scroll through the articles and you are bound to be met by pictures of the ever increasing potholes in our town, and despite the best efforts of various organisations and community groups the problem does not seem to be getting any better, in fact it feels like a cracking dam wall where the efforts to stay ahead of the game of fixing these potholes cannot be plugged by the efforts of those in the community. This is in fact a dangerous spiral, which on the surface appears to be an irritation of damaged vehicles, drivers appearing to be driving under the influence as they swerve and manoeuvre these gaping gaps on the road, and traffic slowing down at the most inconvenient of places during heavy traffic caused by these potholes on our roads especially at intersections, yet underneath this trend is the fact that we are spiralling to what is called broken window syndrome . Broken window syndrome is a concept in criminology that suggests that small acts of vandalism or disorder can lead to more serious crimes. The idea is that if a window is broken and not repaired, it sends the signal that no one cares about the property and that further vandalism or crime is acceptable. This can lead to a spiral of deterioration and increased crime in the area. The theory was first proposed by James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling in a 1982 article. The ever increasing potholes is definitely a part of a larger threat to our town, a town that we so dearly love and where we have spent our hard earned monies to buy homes, invest in businesses and built our lives, and left unchecked we will have a downward spiralling effect on our community. For anybody that travelled the national N12 road through towns such as Wolmaransstad and have seen the absolute disgrace of the condition of the main road going through this otherwise community focussed town (that Major should hang his head in shame), it is evident that unless we continue to drive the upkeep of our roads and our immediate environment, the roads of Potchefstroom would soon be just as bad, and as we reach that point the immediate society would be impacted negatively on other fronts, such as crime and deterioration of our community. Broken windows, such as potholes, rubbish being dumped, grass not being cut, gardens not being maintained, leads to a general sense of hopelessness among those living in the community, a decline in property value, and an increase in crime and disorder, which we are already experiencing in several spots across town. Indeed we can slowly witness the investments moving away from the traditional CBD and surrounding areas, with more developments now taking place towards the Vyfhoek area than the traditional bustling centres of yesteryear. Leaving this task to our council seems to be a futile dream, and the reality is that each of us in Potchefstroom needs to ensure our immediate environment is kept in good shape, if we do not ten our community will start falling apart, that is the factual truth, politicians are not going to help us here, we are going to help ourselves. Here are some actions that we should support or do in our community, to combat the spiral and to protect our town: We should wherever possible support the initiatives by the various businesses and private organisations and business chambers in their efforts to fix our infrastructure and upkeep of our town, such as potholes, an example of such is the Potchefstroom Chamber of Commerce. We should take responsibility for our immediate area, such as cutting the grass which council fails to address, litter in the roads, removal of dilapidated signs and boards that do not belong, in general keep our own backyard in order, plus take over some of the neglected council duties as the current challenges will see council take years to operate efficiently. Our security companies should continue to assist us in ensuring that loitering is monitored and dealt with effectively, dealing with "minor" crimes such as the continued wave of garden equipment theft, lights and cameras being stolen, and the petty theft that we are not even reporting to our police stations anymore. Our estate agents and landlords renting commercial properties should not fall into the trap of renting out property to low quality businesses just in order not to have a premises being empty, these types of businesses degrades a business environment in a rapid fashion. We should support the individuals and groups in our community that offers their services to initiatives such as neighbourhood watches, community forums and the like, by supporting these individuals we build a cohesiveness that feeds back into society overall.     Potchefstromers ken die Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis baie goed, en elke jaar kersfeestyd is veral die Liggiefees die hoogtepunt van die jaar, nie net vir die dorp se genot nie maar ook vir die Kinderhuis se fonds insameling inisiatiewe wat deur die jaar gebeur. Hierdie jaar is dit geen verskil nie, en die kinderhuis het weereens asemrowende liggies gebou wat oud en jonk vermaak, en sommer lekker laat voel dat ons weereens by Kersfees uitgekom het, om nie eers van die vertoonings by die kinderhuis te praat wat hierdie jaar plaasvind nie, name soos Demi-Lee Moore, Brendan Peyper, Robbie Wessels, Jo Black, Spoegwolf, Bok van Blerk, Elvis Blue, is op die spyskaart van vermaak hierdie jaar, dis sommer lekker. Maar daar was ook die week n slegte smaak geplaas in die monde van die publiek, en het sommer hele klomp Potchefstromers warm onder die kraag gehad, dit weens die feit dat party besoekers aan die fees die ligte van tafel af steel tydens hulle besoek, soveelmeer is dat die liggies at van tafel af gesteel is al meer as R8,000 se skade is, met ander woorde die kinderhuis verloor eintlik daardie fondse, en eina dit maak seer. Die kinderhuis het met swaar hart gevrae dat mense asseblief moet uitkyk waneer die skou aan is dat mense nie die liggies vat nie, maar ai dis werklik bitter pil om te sluk om te dink dat daar gesmeek moet word dat mense nie lang vingers moet kry tydens n kinderhuis fondsinsameling nie, dink daaroor en laat dit insink... iemand besoek n kinderhuis, wat fondsinsameling hou, en dan steel daardie persoon die kinderhuis se goed tydens die besoek... dit maak absoluut geen sin dat iemand so sal kan redeneer nie. Maar bitter smaak in die mond is nie waarop die fokus moet wees nie, kom ons almal ondersteun die kinderhuis die jaar en probeer om dit weereens baie suksesvolle jaar afsluiting vir die kinderhuis te maak.

  • Jam Junction for Local Musicians and Bands

    We are very excited to announce the launching of a space specifically for local musicians in the Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, Parys, Kroonstad and surrounding areas, the aim to showcase all our local musicians and to provide local musicians a space to engage with fans as well as businesses where they can perform their gigs. Music from the early 1900s to today has evolved greatly. During the early 1900s, the music of the time was heavily influenced by popular genres such as ragtime, jazz, and blues. As technology improved, the sound of music began to evolve as well. Instruments like the electric guitar, synthesizer, and drum machine were introduced, giving music a more modern sound. The 1950s saw the emergence of rock and roll, which had a major influence on the music of the time. This genre featured electric guitars, drums, and a more energetic sound than its predecessors. The 1960s featured the beginnings of psychedelic rock and the British Invasion, which introduced a new sound to the world. During the 1970s and 1980s, the music of the time was heavily influenced by disco, funk, and rock. This era also saw the development of punk, metal, and hip-hop, which all had a major impact on the sound of music. The 1990s saw the emergence of alternative and grunge rock, as well as the beginnings of electronic music and rap. In the 2000s, genres such as dubstep, EDM, and trap emerged, bringing a new sound to the world. As technology continues to improve, the sound of music will continue to evolve. New genres and subgenres are constantly being created, making music more diverse and interesting than ever before. Being a musician in any of the Genres also changed, in the hey days it was about getting your record cut by a label and then selling these globally, going platinum and making a decent living as a result, and having a record collection of 100 vinyls was impressive, today you can have the whole worlds music in your pocket, and in fact many of us do. With the advent of digital however it seems that the segment of local bands, playing at local gigs, entertaining local patrons were diluted and local gigs became ever harder to secure by many a musician, unless they do it for free. The Go-To Guy, as a local and regional community website focussing on local decided we need to create a corner where our local artists could gain exposure, engage with fans, engage with venues and have a space to themselves, and we created Jam Junction , the aim to bring back local music gigs and exposure to local bands and musicians in the community.   • Discovering Amazing in Parys, Cookies...

    Every once in a while we come across something that amazes us here at The Go-To Guy, sometimes it is someone that goes out of their way for customers, other times it may be a fantastic property, and the list goes on... today we discovered Royal Icing Cookie Art in Parys. Whilst updating different services categories the team at The Go-To Guy cane across a company called Fantazia Cookies, and we loved it so much that we felt we had to share this... you can just see from the work done that a true artists and creative spirit is behind what we found, with words not able to capture our childlike browsing of the different designs and creations... we decided to rather share some of the pictures, which captures all we would like to say, have a look below and decide for yourself :)

  • The Go-To Guy Rental Page was Hot Today

    The Go-To Guy is a community site, serving Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, Orkney, Parys and surrounding areas currently, and also serves as a reference site if you need any services around House and Home in these areas. One of the offerings on the page is that of property rentals, and from the data we see we can tell you 100% that the demand for rentals in our region far outstrips the demand that we witness, and we believe that this is not because spaces are perhaps not available, in fact our research shows that there are more than 200 properties available as we speak, we believe that the contributing factors are as follows: Private rentals are getting lost in the noise on the traditional channels currently being used, such as Facebook, printed media and word of mouth, there is just too much clutter on personal newsfeeds of most pages today, hence getting someone to see your place advertised is challenging. Advertisements placed are far too basic, with a oneliner saying that house to rent is available, resulting in a lot of up and down "ping-pong" communications between renters and landlords, more attention and effort should be placed on creating advertisements, especially if it is higher value properties. Pricing of properties are in fact not in sync with the environment, there seems to be a pricing point of about R3,000 for students and about R5,000 for small apartment for families, yet most of the advertised prices are above this point. Micro Hotspots Other interesting data that we see in the data on the site is that you have micro hotspots, naturally around the university in Potchefstroom being one of them, yet there are others such as Stilfontein that there are a continued flow of requests for properties, yet very few properties seems to be available. Here are a few other stats for you from the site: 26% of traffic today, which was about 2,600 searches went via Potchefstroom page and 17% to Klerksdorp, of which Places to Rent was the most searched item, followed by Jobs, and for services it was Appliance Repairs that was the most requested, followed by Pet Services, Garden Services and Creche and Baby Sitting Services. Further slicing the data shows that Klerksdorp also has a great appetite for Window Blinds and Cleaning services, whilst Parys was Electricians, Handyman, Climate Control, Burglar Proofing and Building services. Yet as stated Rentals was the king of the hill today...

Unmonitored security systems: This security system can be installed by yourself or a security company. Usually this system includes motion sensors, a control panel, glass-break sensors, alarm, door and window sensors. Some of these systems can be connected to your smart phone. The unmonitored security systems is not as sophisticated as the monitored security system, but it provide a good level of security, and is more cost-effective. By recycling one ton of paper, we can save up to 17 trees and 64352 L of water. By saving trees we ensure a well-balanced level of carbon dioxide. Almost everything we use can be recycled. At the rate that people are dumping their waste, we can soon run out of space to dump all the waste.     Spoegwolf the Band is a South African alternative - rock band that plays Afrikaans music.   • Keeping Cats Entertained, Homed and Safe

    Recently we saw a spat on Social Media that became a full on war of words between cat owners in a suburban street and bird owners taht suffered losses due to the cats doing what is absolutely natural to them, with cat owners having a challenge to keep their cat contained, and having to try and cat-proof their garden. During this discussion a number of points came up, one of these being to build your cat a Catio. What is a Catio? Have you ever heard of patios for cats, well that is Catios. Keep your indoor or outdoor cats save, in an enclosed outdoor patio. Your cats can have their outdoor play time, without you searching for them afterwards. Catios is good for cats with behavioural problems. If you spend time with your cats in the catio it can deepen your relationship with your cats. Catios also protect any birdlife in your garden from your cats. Cats’ natural instincts is to be outside, and therefor more and more cat owners love the idea of a save outdoor space for their cats. Catios came in all shapes and sizes. Catios can be built at windows, balconies, porches, patios, decks and in gardens. Things to consider when you are building a Catio: Space: The size of your Catio will depends on where you want to build it. Catios can be built as an attachment to your house or further away in your garden. A window Catio will be much smaller than a garden Catio. Location: Choose an area with elements that your cats will love. Cats love to bask in the sun, so pick an area that gets enough sun throughout the day. Cats are curious by nature, so a location with a view will work great. Avoid location with high noise levels. Access to the Catio: How your cats will enter their Catio will all depends on where you are building the Catio. Access points can be: A window, A sliding door, Exterior door, Cat door. Budget: You can build a small Catio and add to the structure as time goes on. Material for the Catio can be bought at your local home improvement store. Kitten or senior cat Kittens have more energy so you may need to add structures (shelves) where they can play and burn off their energy. Stimulate kittens by adding toys, balls, and chasers. Senior cats just need a space to lay around and will need less shelves that are staged lower. Will your Catio complement your home? You can build and decorate your Catio to fit the style of your home. You can decorate your Catio with plants, toys, and scratchers to stimulate your cats. Each cat has their own unique personality, but sometimes their behaviour can be challenging. Hints that may suggest that it is time to get a Catio. Your cats’ indoor activities have become destructive – A cat’s favoUrite place is a windowsill, due to their natural curiosity. They may damage your curtains and blinds to get a peek out of the window. Your cat may need to lose a few kilograms – Cats that spend all their time indoor can get obesity. Motivate your cat to lose a few kilograms by running around in his Catio. Your cat needs more space – If cats don’t have enough space, they may start having behavioural problems like urine marking, hissing, and attacking other cats. Your garden is not cat friendly – Cats like to hunt birds and can leave you a few unwanted gifts. Your cat start nibbling on your indoor plants – Due to cats’ curiosity they may start nibbling on your toxic houseplants. You can place cat friendly plants inside the Catio. Cat stuck in a tree- Cast’s love climbing trees, a Catio will save you energy trying to get your cat out of a tree. Helpful tips when building your Catio: Level your foundation – If you build your Catio on grass, make sure that the surface is flat and level. Ensure that you remove all tree roots and stones, as it can damage your foundation later. Escape proof your Catio – Bury the wire of your Catio underneath the ground, round off by placing decorative concrete paving around the perimeter of the Catio. Fake grass – Fake grass is a big no! Wire – Choose wire that is safe, strong, and long lasting to ensure the safety of your cats. Don’t block the sun – Choose a light blocking opaque roof and create shady spots with awning or a sheltering bench.   • Should my Fridge settle?

    There are lots of myths surrounding moving your fridge and then waiting for several hours before you switch it on, and some even say that your fridge may explode, we thought we would cover a few basics about moving your fridge and why it is recommended to leave it for a few hours to settle before you actually plug it in and switch it on. The real reason that you need to leave your fridge to settle is that inside the internal parts of your fridge there is oil present, which is actually compressor oil, the purpose of the oil being to lubricate certain parts and also to act as a coolant for any parts that may get hot, and without the oil your fridge would break rather quickly. In addition if oil did move around it may cause the compressor itself to have too little oil in the compressor, and by allowing the fridge to settle you are assured that the oil flows back to the compressor itself. When you have moved your fridge the recommendation would be to let your fridge settle properly, this is to ensure that any oil in the system settles and do not cause blockages of the system, this time to settle is normally contained in the manufacturers manual, which nobody reads :), and can be as short as 2 hours and as long as 24 hours, the longer you leave your fridge to settle the better chance you have of not having oil blockages. The above advice is even more critical if you transported your fridge on its side, which you should try to avoid at all costs as the internal parts of the fridge could be damaged if transported on its side.
