  • DA calls on Potchefstroom residents to sign Demerging Petition before 3 August 2025

“Enough is enough! Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp deserve accountable, functional local governance.” It’s been a long time coming, but action is finally being taken by the Democratic Alliance (DA) ward members of Potchefstroom to get the ball rolling in terms of demerging Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom. These two towns merged in 2015 and ever since then, there have only been issues. The petition ends on Sunday, 3 August, and residents are encouraged to visit the various ‘petition points’ throughout town to complete the forms. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations In a bid to capture the sentiments of local leadership, The Potch Gazette posed the same ten questions to two municipal councillors, both of whom expressed strong support for the proposed demerger - Caucus Leader, HJ Moolman, and member of Parliament a nd Head of Constituency, C hris Hattingh.  The call to disestablish the JB Marks Local Municipality and restore the former Potchefstroom (Tlokwe) and Ventersdorp municipalities has reached a critical stage. The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) is currently considering application DEM 8001, which could see the reversal of the controversial 2015 merger that combined the two towns into one municipality. A Politically Driven Merger That Failed Both councillors were unequivocal in their stance: the merger has been a failure. Mr Hattingh stated, “I unequivocally support the demerger. The 2015 merger was politically imposed, executed without meaningful public participation, and ignored technical reports that warned of its unsustainability. It has eroded service delivery, dismantled accountability, and collapsed local governance in both Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp.” Councillor Moolman echoed this view, emphasising that the merger aggravated Ventersdorp’s already fragile financial position and left Potchefstroom with the burden of a failing municipality. Service Delivery in Crisis Since the merger, the residents of both towns have experienced declining service delivery standards. Water shortages, frequent power outages, raw sewage in streets, and deteriorating infrastructure have become daily realities. Potchefstroom, once known as the “City of Expertise,” now faces the same municipal failures that plague many towns across the North West. It seems that none of the promised benefits have materialised. “Instead, Potchefstroom inherited a R700 million Eskom debt, collapsing infrastructure, and a municipality crippled by mismanagement.” A shocking revelation for Potchefstroom residents.  Financial Mismanagement and Corruption Allegations The financial state of JB Marks Municipality is one of the concerns that both gentlemen highlighted during the interview. Revenue collection in Ventersdorp reportedly covers only 15% of its needs, forcing Potchefstroom to carry the financial load. Irregular hiring practices, supply chain abuses, and billions in irregular, unauthorised, and wasteful expenditure have plagued the municipality. Image: Democratic Alliance “Despite forensic investigations and scathing Auditor-General reports, there has been zero accountability - only impunity and denial.” Furthermore, oversight institutions, including the Auditor-General and the Hawks, have been slow to act on corruption complaints, prolonging the crisis. Residents Urged to Participate in Demerger Process Sections 24 and 25 of the Municipal Demarcation Act outline the legal process for disestablishing a municipality. Application DEM 8001, submitted by stakeholders and supported by councillors, is under active consideration by the MDB. Councillors urge residents to take part in the upcoming public participation processes to ensure their voices are heard. “You were silenced in 2015. This is your chance to be heard. Stand up. Speak out. Get involved.” Hope in a Split If the demerger is approved, Potchefstroom could regain its financial and administrative autonomy, while Ventersdorp could receive focused provincial and national support to address its longstanding challenges. “Restoring Tlokwe Municipality will return accountability and restore service delivery,” said one of the councillors. “This fight is about more than borders: it’s about dignity, accountability, and the basic right to functional local government.” Image: The Go-To Guy Creations With the MDB expected to have finalised its research by March 2025 already and decisions anticipated later in the year, the future of both towns now rests in the hands of residents who demand change.   “Enough is enough! Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp deserve accountable, functional local governance.” Sign the petition today! Download the document (Afrikaans, English or Setswana) below, complete it, and email it to: DemergeNOW@gmail.com or visit the following 'petition points': Thursday, 31 July: 15h00 to 16h30 ( NTT on the N12) Friday, 1 August: 07h00 to 08h00 (De Land) Friday, 1 August: 08h30 to 09h30 (Baillie Park Spar) Saturday, 2 August: 09h00 to 11h00 (Pick 'n Pay, Van Der Hoff Park) __________________________________________________________________________________ Johané van Dyk - Potchefstroom

  • Marketplace Scams in Potchefstroom: What’s Happening?

Authorities in North West Province, including Potchefstroom, have issued repeated warnings about increasing incidents of online fraud  and ' scammy' vehicle or rental listings . The South African Police Service reports cases where below-market‑price vehicle listings were used to lure deposit payments before the scammer vanished, often after sending fake documentation to appear legitimate. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations In particular, there are two prevalent local scam formats: Fraudulent vehicle listings : Scammers post pictures of attractive vehicles at significantly lower prices than market value. Interested buyers are told the car needs to be reserved via deposit or risk losing the deal. Once paid, the seller either disappears or shares counterfeit paperwork while never delivering the car . Fake rental/property listings : Scammers create fake rentals on Facebook or classifieds, often copying legitimate property images. They collect deposits and then vanish, leaving tenants without a property and with lost money. Common Scam Tactics & Red Flags Although scams may vary, most follow familiar patterns. Understanding them helps you spot trouble early: 1. “Too good to be true” pricing Ultra‑low prices can be bait. Scammers aim to entice buyers with deals far below market value, often for high-demand goods like smartphones, vehicles, or designer items. 2. Requests for deposits on high‑value items A common vehicle or rental trick: demand for upfront payment or deposit before items or keys are exchanged. Legitimate sellers rarely insist on deposit before an inspection or viewing. 3. Refusal to meet in person or show the item Scammers often avoid meeting face-to-face or showing items in person, citing excuses like immediate shipment, urgency, or remote location, particularly with rentals or vehicles. 4. Unusual payment methods Requests to pay via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or obscure wire transfers are red flags. These are untraceable and preferred by scammers. Secure methods, cash on delivery, reputable escrow services, are safer. 5. Fake proof of payment or overpayment schemes Buyers may “accidentally” overpay and ask for a refund, or send screenshots of transfer confirmations that turn out to be fake. Sellers lose both item and refunded money when the payment is reversed later. 6. Pressure tactics and manufactured urgency Statements like “someone else is interested, must pay immediately” or “offer valid only today” are classic tricks to push you into hasty decisions without due diligence. 7. Poor grammar, suspicious profiles Seller accounts with no prior listings, few friends, inconsistent grammar, or that ask to take the conversation off-platform, in email or WhatsApp, should raise alarms. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations How to Protect Yourself in Potchefstroom ✅ Double‑check suspiciously low listings Research market prices first. If a listing feels too cheap, especially for cars, apartments, or electronics, treat it cautiously. Ask for comparative listings and check market data before engaging. ✅ Insist on seeing the item in person Always inspect items before paying, especially for high-value goods. Never pay or deposit for a view-only photoshoot offer. Viewing in person reduces risk significantly. ✅ Do not send deposits unless you’ve verified legitimacy For high‑value items such as cars or rental properties, do not  send any deposit until you’ve seen the item, signed paperwork, or independently verified ownership. If in doubt, negotiate payment upon inspection. ✅ Use secure, traceable payment methods Avoid gift cards, crypto, or cash transfers. Use cash in person, well-known bank transfers, or trusted escrow services such as Paysho in South Africa. Such platforms hold funds until both parties are satisfied. ✅ Keep communication on-platform Converse via Facebook Messenger or official classified platforms. This preserves traceability. Scammers often demand moving conversations to WhatsApp or email to avoid platform safety tools. ✅ Secure your online accounts Enable two‑factor authentication (2FA) on your Facebook or Gmail accounts. Many scammers access legitimate user accounts to list fake items, making them appear real. ✅ Check profiles and previous activity Inspect the seller’s marketplace history, ratings, friends, and reviews. A profile with limited activity or multiple identical listings in different locations is suspicious. ✅ Avoid sharing personal details or OTP codes Never share your bank PIN, One-Time PIN (OTP), password, or ID number with sellers or “customer support.” Banks will never request such information over the phone or WhatsApp. ✅ Report suspicious activity If you encounter a scam, report it to: The online platform (e.g. Marketplace, Gumtree) Your bank (fraud line) South African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) or ScamAdviser. This helps reduce future scams and protects others. Final Thought Marketplace scams are on the rise in Potchefstroom and the broader North West region . Whether you're buying a car, renting an apartment, or hunting for bargains online, the threat of losing money and personal information to fraudsters is real. But with informed caution and smart practices, such as verifying listings, meeting in person, using secure payment methods, and trusting your instincts, you can significantly reduce your risk. Remember: if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Stay savvy, stay alert, and help keep Potchefstroom safe by raising awareness and reporting suspicious activity. Safe shopping! #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #newstalk #scamalert #marketplace

  • 24-Hour Water Shutdown Alert: Urgent Maintenance at Boskop Dam

Residents of Potchefstroom and nearby areas are advised to prepare for a significant temporary water shutdown as urgent maintenance takes place at Boskop Dam , one of the region’s key water supply sources. This maintenance work is being carried out by the Department of Water and Sanitation  to address critical equipment that requires immediate repair. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations 🔧 What to Expect A full 24-hour shutdown  of both the Left and Right Bank Canals  at Boskop Dam is currently underway. This measure has been deemed necessary to allow technical teams to conduct urgent repairs and inspections safely. 🚱 Impact on Potchefstroom Water Supply The temporary shutdown will have a direct impact on the Potchefstroom Water Treatment Plant , which relies on water from Boskop to feed several local reservoirs. As a result, supply to various parts of Potchefstroom may experience low pressure or complete outages. Key affected areas include: The Potchefstroom CBD Residential extensions (Ext 1–3) Industrial zones such as Mohadin High-demand public service facilities 🛑 Important Advice for Residents Community members are strongly encouraged  to: Store enough water  for drinking, cooking, and essential household use. Limit non-essential water usage  throughout the shutdown period. Report any emergency water issues  using official municipal channels. Residents’ cooperation during this period is greatly appreciated as the municipality works with the Department of Water and Sanitation to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. • Medical ID Cards & Wristbands: Lifesaving Emergency Tools

In any medical emergency, a car accident, sudden loss of consciousness or shock, victims often cannot speak for themselves . Government health guidelines stress that in such situations, “it is very important that the person rescuing you…is aware of [your] special medical needs”. Medical ID products (bracelets, wristbands, necklaces or wallet cards) silently communicate vital health information to first responders when the wearer is unable to explain it. These IDs can list conditions (diabetes, asthma, heart disease, etc.), allergies, current medications and emergency contacts. In short, they speak for you when you can’t . By wearing a clearly engraved ID, a patient “will receive the appropriate medical care and [have] their life saved in an emergency”. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The high rate of road accidents makes this especially relevant in towns like Potchefstroom , Klerksdorp , and Carletonville , where traffic-related injuries are a growing concern. In 2022, over 12,400 people died on the country’s roads and more than 100,000 were seriously injured [ pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov ]. Victims may be unconscious or confused, so immediate access to their medical history can be a matter of life or death. For example, local experts note that motorcyclists (who face high crash risk) must carry emergency health details: in a crash, “it is essential for the motorcyclist to have all the relevant emergency medical and contact details available” to guide first responders [ ice-tags.co.za ]. Without an ID, paramedics may have no clue about hidden risks, ICE-TAGS advises that a bystander “look for a Medical alert bracelet in order to determine whether the victim suffers with any allergies, has diabetes or even a heart condition.” Who needs a medical ID?    Everyone can benefit, but especially people with chronic or special health concerns. If you have any chronic condition or allergy , a medical ID is strongly recommended . For example: Diabetes, epilepsy, or seizure disorders.    These can lead to unconscious episodes. An ID can alert medics to check blood sugar or use seizure precautions. Asthma and heart/lung conditions.    Acute attacks or heart events must be treated differently; an ID signals these risks. Severe allergies (foods, drugs, insect stings).    In anaphylaxis every second counts; ID bracelets warn paramedics to give life-saving treatment. Implanted devices or complex regimens.    Pacemakers or blood thinners require special handling, an ID can prevent dangerous medical errors. Dementia or other cognitive impairments.    Patients may not recognize their own conditions or contacts; an ID ensures rescuers know who to call and how to help. Children with medical needs.   Pediatric versions of bracelets and cards exist so young kids with diabetes, allergies or other conditions have an ID. (Many brands offer child-sized bands and tags.) A Note on Cochlear Implants and Medical IDs People with cochlear implants , small electronic devices that provide a sense of sound to individuals who are profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing, should also consider wearing medical ID bracelets or carrying an ICE card. These implants can be damaged during certain medical procedures , especially MRI scans, which pose risks unless healthcare workers are aware of the implant In essence, anyone  on regular medications or with a medical condition that could complicate emergency care should carry ID. ER24 paramedics advise that ICE (“In Case of Emergency”) information, either on a bracelet or card, is critical if you can’t speak. They recommend including all  pertinent data: emergency contact names/numbers, known allergies , existing medical conditions , medications  you take, blood type, etc. er24.co.za . Carrying an ICE card in your wallet or phone lock-screen can help, but this is a backup – responders may not have time to check a phone or card . A visible medical ID worn on the body ensures immediate access. Types of Medical IDs:    These IDs come in many forms. The most common are bracelets or wristbands  (made of metal, silicone or rubber) and necklaces/dog-tags  engraved with your info. Some people wear small pendants  on a chain, or even attach a medical tag to a keyring or shoe tag. For those who prefer not to wear jewelry, a medical ID card  (credit-card size) can be carried in a wallet. Whatever the format, the purpose is the same: to convey your health details at a glance. ER24 advises wearing an ICE bracelet or pendant, or carrying an ICE card in your purse/wallet, so responders have your info immediately er24.co.za . (They note stickers on phones or keychains can also work in a pinch.) What to engrave:    Whatever form it takes, include concise, critical data. Key information should be: your name , one or two emergency contact  names and numbers, any medical conditions or diagnoses , allergies , and key medications er24.co.za . Additional useful details are blood type and doctor’s contact. Emergency services rely on these clues: for instance, knowing a patient is diabetic or on blood thinners can shape a field diagnosis. Benefits in Emergencies:    Wearing a medical ID has clear advantages. In a front-line survey of EMTs and ER doctors, over 95%  agreed that medical ID jewelry can improve patient outcomes . How? It lets responders start treatment faster and more accurately . With a correct ID, a paramedic won’t accidentally give an allergenic drug or mismanage insulin levels. This can shorten hospital stays and reduce overall costs of an incident . In short, a medical ID acts like an instant medical history at the scene. Studies show that IDs “can be a great indicator for diagnosing the problem” and help providers give “the best possible patient care”. Conversely, without an ID, even minor conditions can turn critical because valuable minutes are lost gathering patient history. It’s a simple step that can save lives. Bringing It All Together In today’s world, medical ID cards and wristbands are simple yet powerful safety tools. They ensure that if disaster strikes, a crash, a sudden illness or injury, your essential health information travels with you. Paramedics and ER doctors report they rely on this information to make quick, accurate decisions . By wearing an ID bracelet or carrying an ICE card with up-to-date details, you take a proactive step to protect yourself and aid those who would help you. It could make all the difference when every second counts. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #carltonville #klerksdorp #securityandsaefty #potchefstroomfirstresponders

  • Rand Water Supply Cut Causes Widespread Disruption in Merafong City

On 28 July 2025, residents across Merafong City woke to a sudden halt in their water supply after Rand Water interrupted deliveries to the municipality’s reservoir network. The stoppage follows an ongoing funding dispute, despite the municipality having forwarded a substantial payment just days earlier. In response, local leaders have deployed emergency measures to provide relief while negotiations continue. Image:  Merafong City Local Municipality Oversight Visits to Affected Reservoirs Executive Mayor Cllr Nozuko Best, together with MMC for Water, Electricity and Gas Cllr Luvo Mganu, Municipal Manager Mr. Mabuza, and Executive Director for Energy Mr. Ngwebu, carried out site inspections at all major storage facilities on Monday. These oversight visits aimed to assess the impact of the interruption and identify any immediate infrastructure concerns that could be exacerbating the shortage. Areas Hardest Hit Rand Water’s suspension of supply has left several communities without tap water, notably: Carletonville Khutsong South Extension 4 Khutsong Extension 5 Welverdiend Elijah Barayi Bylbank Residents in these areas have been advised to ration remaining water reserves until tanker deliveries arrive. Background on the Payment Dispute Despite having transferred R50 million to Rand Water on 24 July, a transaction formally documented and aligned with a National Treasury–backed agreement, the municipality’s water supply was halted. Municipal officials attribute the interruption to a breakdown in communications over invoicing schedules rather than technical failures at the treatment works. Image:  Merafong City Local Municipality Emergency Relief Measures To mitigate immediate hardships, Merafong City has dispatched municipal water tankers to each impacted neighbourhood. According to the municipality, these tankers began rolling out on Tuesday morning and will continue daily deliveries “until normal network operations resume.” Local schools and clinics are being prioritised for additional bulk deliveries. Stakeholder Engagement and Next Steps Municipal leadership is in active talks with MEC Jacob Mamabolo (COGTA) and other provincial stakeholders to expedite resolution of the funding impasse. While no firm timeline has been announced, the municipality has pledged to keep the public informed of progress. Technical teams remain on standby to reinstate full pressure to the distribution network as soon as Rand Water restores bulk supply. Closing Remarks: At this publishing time, no further updates have been received, and it remains unclear whether the water supply is still off or has been reconnected. Merafong City residents are advised to utilise tanker-delivered water sparingly and await further updates via official municipal channels. In the meantime, municipal authorities affirm their commitment to resolving the funding dispute swiftly and restoring uninterrupted water service throughout the city. #TheGoToGuy #Carletonville #MerafongCityLocalMunicipality #servicedeliveryupdate #carletonvillegazette

  • Special Cleanup Operation Strengthens Compliance and Safety in City of Matlosana’s CBD

On Friday, 25 July 2025, the City of Matlosana’s Special Cleanup Operation rolled through the Central Business District (CBD) for a second consecutive week, underscoring the municipality’s drive to enforce by‑law compliance and bolster public safety. Spearheaded by Councillor Wesly Kgang in collaboration with Ms Lesego Seametso from the municipal administration, the operation targeted business irregularities, overdue accounts and road‑safety hazards. A diverse team of municipal officials, including officers from Local Economic Development, Traffic, Housing and District Health Services, joined the effort, demonstrating a coordinated, multi‑departmental approach to urban management. Image: City of Matsolana Assessing Commercial Compliance The core focus of this phase of the cleanup was rigorous business inspection across the CBD’s main thoroughfares. Inspectors checked whether guesthouses, retail outlets and food vendors held valid municipal permits, complied with health and safety regulations and maintained required fire‑safety equipment. According to the municipal communications department, officers visited more than 50 premises during the day: Guesthouse Closures:  Four establishments failed to meet minimum safety or sanitation standards, such as adequate fire escapes, potable water supply or properly maintained refuse areas and were immediately shut down. Notices posted at each entrance informed proprietors of pending legal action if remedial steps are not taken within the next 14 days. Electricity Disconnections:  Five businesses with severely overdue municipal accounts had their power supply temporarily disconnected. Officers emphasized that reconnection is contingent upon full settlement of outstanding balances and the signing of a payment‑plan agreement. In a brief statement, Councillor Kgang explained: “Ensuring that commercial operators respect by‑laws protects not only their customers but also neighbouring businesses and pedestrians. It is our responsibility to maintain a safe, clean and accountable urban environment.” Road Safety and Public Well‑Being Beyond commercial inspections, the cleanup team addressed road‑related safety risks in partnership with the Traffic Department. Crews repaired damaged traffic signs, repainted faded pedestrian crossings and removed illegally parked vehicles that obstructed footpaths. A mobile unit conducted random sobriety checkpoints near late‑night entertainment spots to deter drunk driving. In addition, officers distributed educational leaflets at bus stops and taxi ranks, reminding commuters of pedestrian‑right‑of‑way rules and safe crossing practices. “A single accident can ripple through the entire district,” noted Mr Thabo Mothibedi, a senior traffic engineer involved in the operation. “By proactively fixing signage and enforcing parking regulations, we reduce collisions and improve the overall flow of traffic.” Multi‑Departmental Collaboration The success of the cleanup day rested on a clearly defined collaboration among several municipal divisions: Local Economic Development (LED):  Oversaw business‑compliance checks and liaised with guesthouse owners to outline corrective measures. Housing Services:  Verified that self‑catering and informal accommodation providers adhered to zoning laws and housing‑density limits. District Health Services:  Conducted spot‑checks for food‑safety practices in restaurants and street‑food stalls, issuing improvement notices where necessary. Traffic Department:  Managed vehicle removals, road‑marking maintenance and public‑safety outreach. This joint‑effort model allowed teams to share intelligence in real time via a dedicated radio network, enabling rapid follow‑ups on violations and more efficient use of enforcement resources. Image: City of Matsolana Addressing Unauthorised Residency During patrols of back‑street alleys and informal trading areas, officers encountered two foreign nationals lacking proper documentation. Under South African immigration regulations, they were detained and handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further processing. While the municipality does not handle immigration enforcement directly, senior officials stressed the necessity of cooperation with law‑enforcement authorities whenever undocumented individuals are discovered during municipal operations. Business Community Response Reactions from the local business community were mixed. Ms Thandi Mogale, owner of a café on Van Riebeeck Street, welcomed the heightened scrutiny: “We compete fairly and maintain our hygiene standards. It’s good to see the municipality taking action so that non‑compliant operators don’t gain an unfair advantage.” Conversely, an anonymous guesthouse proprietor expressed frustration, citing what they described as “short notice” for certain corrective directives. Municipal spokesperson Lesego Seametso responded that advance warnings had been issued via radio broadcasts and official social media channels over the previous fortnight. Sustaining Momentum Council members say that cleanup operations of this scale will continue on a monthly basis, targeting different zones in rotation. Future plans include: Expanded Licensing Workshops:  LED will hold on‑site workshops to assist small business owners with permit applications and by‑law requirements. Digital Account Alerts:  A new SMS system will notify ratepayers of upcoming account due dates to prevent future disconnections. Community‑Safety Forums:  Traffic and Community Policing Forum representatives will convene public meetings to gather input on high‑risk intersections and parking enforcement needs. Councillor Kgang highlighted the importance of sustained engagement: “This is not a one‑off event. We want to foster a culture where compliance and safety are shared responsibilities between the city, business owners and the community.” Looking Ahead: Friday’s operation in Matlosana’s CBD demonstrated how multi‑departmental coordination can yield concrete improvements in urban management, from shuttering unsafe guesthouses to reinforcing pedestrian safety. Municipal leaders urge all business operators to regularize their status, attend forthcoming workshops and fulfil their civic obligations. As the City of Matlosana prepares for the next cleanup cycle, residents and entrepreneurs alike are encouraged to cooperate fully with inspection teams and uphold the standards that make the CBD vibrant, welcoming and secure for everyone. #TheGoToGuy #klerksdorp #cityofmatsolana #klerksdorpgazette

  • Merafong City Local Municipality: Overview & Contact Details

Merafong City Local Municipality (MCLM), formally designated as a Category B municipality under South Africa’s Municipal Structures Act, is a significant local government entity in the southwestern portion of Gauteng Province. Spanning roughly 1 631 km² , it comprises 28 wards and a mixed-member council structure, with 28 ward councillors and 24 proportional representatives . Nestled within the West Rand District Municipality alongside Mogale City and Rand West, it encompasses urban towns, former mining settlements and rural areas, including Carletonville, Khutsong, Fochville, Kokosi, Greenspark, Welverdiend, Wedela, Blybank and a number of mining towns. Historical and Geographic Context Origins and Boundary Developments Merafong’s name derives from the Setswana term for “mining area” or “mining region” – reflective of its gold‑rich heritage. The municipality’s history is inextricably linked to gold mining: Carletonville was established in the 1930s and ’40s to support extraction of some of the world's richest gold deposits. Fochville (declared a town in 1951) and Wedela (established in 1978 and recognised as municipal in 1990) also emerged around mining activity. Originally formed in 2000 as a “cross‑boundary” municipality spanning Gauteng and North West provinces, Merafong was moved in 2005 into North West province. This shifted back in 2009 following legal and civic intervention sparked by unrest in Khutsong; the Constitutional Court ruled that the municipality must be realigned entirely within Gauteng. Geography The municipality’s terrain spans high‑veld goldfields, mineral‑rich landscapes and both dense townships and rural settlements. The area is drained by rivers such as the Magalies, Rietspruit, Wonderfontein Spruit and by the Lancaster Dam reservoir. Mining activity has impacted water quality in certain waterways. Governance Structure & Leadership Council Composition and Political Oversight Merafong City is governed through a mixed-member proportional system : 28 ward councillors elected by first‑past‑the‑post in the 28 wards; and an additional 27 (or 24 per your sourced data) from party lists to ensure overall proportional representation. The African National Congress (ANC)  has historically been dominant, though it lost its overall majority in the 2021 elections. Executive and Administration The political executive is led by the Executive Mayor , presently Councillor Nozuko Best, supported by a Mayoral Committee of ten full-time members overseeing allocated portfolios such as Finance; Public Safety & Transport; Human Settlement; Health & Social Development; Sports, Recreation, Arts & Culture; Corporate Services; Roads, Stormwater & Public Works; Integrated Environmental Management; Electricity, Gas, Water & Energy; and Local Economic & Rural Development. The Speaker, Deputy Mayor, Chief Whip and sectoral councillors operate under this structure (as per provided roster). The administrative arm  is led by the Municipal Manager (Dumisani Donald Mabuza), Chief Financial Officer (Palesa Makhubela), Chief Operations Officer, and a team of Executive Managers in Corporate Services, Infrastructure Development, Economic Development, and Community Services. Since September 2022, the municipality has been under Section 139 provincial administration , reflecting oversight due to governance failures, with integration into West Rand and provincial intergovernmental structures  Image: Executive Mayor , presently Councillor Nozuko Best Economic Profile & Development Strategy Economic Drivers and Structure Mining remains the central pillar of Merafong’s economy, accounting for a large share of Gross Value Added due to its gold reserves. Other sectors, such as transport & logistics (~18%), business services (~15%), construction (~14%), trade (~11%) and manufacturing (~6%), also contribute to the local economy according to recent IDP and economic profiles. Integrated Development Plan & Vision The municipality’s Vision 2035  (reaffirmed in 2024/25 planning) focuses on building “an economically sustainable, community-oriented and safe city.” Its mission seeks to foster transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery through enabling governance and strategic interventions as detailed in the Draft IDP and related frameworks. A suite of strategic documents filed in mid‑2025 includes the draft Final IDP 2025–26 , budget and Medium Term Revenue & Expenditure Framework (MTREF), Fraud Prevention Plan, ICT Governance Framework, Integrated Waste Management Plan, Roads & Stormwater Master Plan, Human Settlement Plan, and a Tourism Development Strategy, among others  merafong.gov.za . Institutional Engagement & Oversight Merafong actively participates in district, provincial and national intergovernmental forums , including the West Rand IGR structures and SALGA assemblies. These networks are intended to support alignment with provincial and national outcomes, but the municipality does not operate wholly independently, it remains subject to provincial intervention under S139 and oversight mechanisms  Key Assets and Opportunities Abe Bailey Nature Reserve A major environmental and tourism asset within Merafong is the Abe Bailey Nature Reserve , a protected area of over 4 200 hectares near Carletonville/Kputsong. It supports over 280 bird species including flamingos, storks, raptors and vultures, along with mammalian species like black‑backed jackal, serval, caracal, zebras, springbok, duikers and rare sightings of leopards and aardvark   Wikipedia . This reserve offers eco‑tourism, education and conservation potential. Transport & Connectivity Given its strategic location on national roads (N12, N14), Merafong is well‑placed for inter‑municipal trade and logistics. Its Vision 2035 reflects ambitious goals toward sustainability, safety, and effective service delivery. The municipality benefits from robust planning frameworks and natural assets such as the Abe Bailey Nature Reserve. However, mounting debt, poor audits, service disruptions, billing discrepancies and delayed infrastructure repair expose structural vulnerabilities. Success in the coming years will depend on fiscal discipline, infrastructure renewal, economic diversification and renewed public trust. Only through transparent governance, strategic investment, and meaningful community engagement can Merafong transform its potential into lasting progress for all its residents. #TheGoToGuy #Carletonville #MerafongCityLocalMunicipality #servicedelivery #carletonvillegazette

#TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #stroomcares #potchgazette
