  • Raise a Glass to Conservation at Lekwena - 13 June

An evening of wine, wildlife, and war stories from the bush There are plenty of good reasons to crack open a bottle of wine on a Friday evening. But on 13 June 2025, you can do it for a cause that actually makes a difference, and we’re not talking about rescuing your sanity after a long week. The SANParks Honorary Rangers of the Bankenveld Region are inviting you to join them for a night of conservation, coffee, chocolate, and courage at the beautiful Lekwena Wildlife Estate just outside Potch. What’s Happening and Where The event, titled Raise a Glass to Conservation, will be hosted at the Lekwena Plaaskombuis, a charming venue nestled within the Lekwena Wildlife Estate, which spans over 3000 hectares of prime bushveld. Doors open at 17:30, with the festivities kicking off at 18:00. Tickets go for R250 a pop, not bad considering what’s on offer. Wine, Coffee, and Chocolate – With a Side of Purpose This isn’t your average cheese-and-wine shindig. Guests will get to sample Rhino Tears wine, sip on Crater Coffees, and indulge in artisanal chocolates, all while hearing gripping conservation stories straight from those who’ve been on the frontlines protecting South Africa’s wildlife. It’s a laid-back evening with a serious mission: raising funds for anti-poaching efforts. And let’s be honest, wine tastes better when it’s saving rhinos. More Than Just a Party The event is hosted by the SANParks Honorary Rangers, a volunteer group that gives their time, skills, and resources to support South African National Parks. They’re not in it for the glory (or the wine, for that matter). Every rand raised goes toward boots-on-the-ground projects, like anti-poaching patrols, ranger training, and supporting conservation infrastructure. About the Venue Lekwena Wildlife Estate isn’t just a pretty face. With a mix of bushveld, savannah, wetlands and rocky outcrops, it’s one of the North West’s top spots for game ranching and wildlife viewing. It’s also home to families who’ve chosen to live with giraffes as neighbours and wildebeest as lawn ornaments. Not a bad place to toast to nature, really. The Nuts and Bolts Date: Friday, 13 June 2025 Time: 17:30 for 18:00 Venue: Lekwena Plaaskombuis, Lekwena Wildlife Estate, Potchefstroom Cost: R250 per person Booking: WhatsApp or call Ian at 082-260-8768 If you like your wine with a side of impact and your Friday nights with a purpose, Lekwena’s Raise a Glass to Conservation is the place to be. Just remember to pace yourself, the rhinos are counting on you.

George Roos, a 25-year-old from Frankfort, has recently been hospitalised with an undiagnosed illness. Doctors aren’t quite sure what’s going on yet, but what they do know is that George’s blood work has come back with some worrying results, his white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets are all critically low. He’s currently in hospital in Pretoria, and while tests continue, one thing is certain: George needs a bone marrow transplant, urgently. Testing involves nothing more than a simple mouth swab. No needles, no drama. And if you’re a match? You won’t even need to donate actual bone marrow, the cells can be harvested from a blood donation. No one’s asking you to lie on an operating table. Just roll up your sleeve. • SportStroom Episode 26: A Deep Dive with Strength and Conditioning Specialist Colin Powell

Drikus sits down  with Colin Powell, the sports scientist behind North-West University’s impressive athletic output, the Baby Proteas, and various elite private athletes to unpack the science, strategy, and sheer hard work that goes into elite athletic performance. The Go-To Guy Photo: Drikus with Colin Powell From Polokwane to Potch: An Unexpected Journey Colin’s journey didn’t start with gold medals or national titles. “I was never the best athlete,” he admits, having played in lower-tier school teams in Polokwane. But what he lacked in raw talent, he made up for with tenacity and a passion for movement. His fascination with biomechanics, conditioning, and long-term development led him to Potchefstroom in 2012, where he pursued studies in human movement sciences. Now completing his PhD in the field, Colin has built his career around one core idea: movement matters. “Bad Players Can Make Great Coaches” Colin’s philosophy stands in contrast to the age-old adage that only great players make great coaches. He believes that because he had to work harder than others to keep up, he developed a deeper understanding of the science behind movement, strength, and conditioning. That understanding forms the bedrock of his approach, preparing athletes to withstand the demands of high-performance sport through structured, evidence-based training. From Setbacks to Setups Like many professionals, Powell faced setbacks. Instead of folding, he humbled himself by working as a gym sales rep, gaining perspective before seizing an unexpected opportunity with NWU netball. Despite knowing little about the sport initially, Powell applied his scientific mindset to learn quickly. His early years were tough, injuries plagued the squad post-COVID, but those challenges forged a shift in approach. “Bodyweight exercises alone just weren’t cutting it,” he explains. “We had to rebuild tissue resilience from scratch.” Revolutionizing Women’s Sport Conditioning The results of his new strategy were stark. Powell introduced heavy resistance training into women’s netball, a bold move that initially raised eyebrows. But the outcomes spoke for themselves: explosive speed, reduced soft tissue injuries, and improved power outputs. His athletes now squat up to 200kg and jump higher than ever before, not by doing endless planks or mimic exercises with no court relevance, but by targeting the exact biomechanics needed to perform game-specific movements. Challenging the Status Quo Powell isn’t afraid to question convention. In his clinics and workshops, he often warns: “Today, I’m going to offend you. Not personally, but how you think.” Whether it’s challenging the validity of deep squats for netball players or rethinking planks as core exercises, Powell prioritizes relevance and efficiency over tradition. The Baby Proteas and Beyond Colin is now part of the setup preparing South Africa’s U21 Baby Proteas for the 2025 World Cup. His role focuses on monitoring movement, load management, and building explosive strength in athletes who come from across the country’s top universities. “I’m not just helping them play better now,” he says. “I’m laying a foundation for who they’ll be in five years.” Inside the NWU High-Performance Structure Powell leads a team that includes two fellow sports scientists at Potchefstroom Gimnasium Together, they oversee all sports codes, rugby, netball, cricket, hockey, and more. Their approach starts from under-14 level and follows athletes through to varsity and provincial competition, creating a long-term development structure focused on movement, not just muscle. Life Beyond the Gym Despite his demanding schedule, often starting at 4 a.m., Colin values his family life. “We have a spoken rule at home: no work after work,” he shares. That balance comes through in weekend retreats, home renovations, and quiet time away from the relentless rhythm of sport. What’s Next for Powell? He’s constantly experimenting and improving. His latest trial includes testing two strength programs side-by-side, one tried-and-tested, one new and analyzing their impact on athlete explosiveness. The research from this PhD work will inform his 2026 programs and potentially reshape national approaches to strength and conditioning. Is Netball a Contact Sport? “If it wasn’t, why would there be a ‘contact’ penalty?” he grins. Powell points out that players suffer concussions, sprains, and collisions, often in the heat of crucial matches. That only reinforces the need for robust physical conditioning, agility, and injury prevention. Colin Powell is more than just a sports scientist, he’s a force shaping the next generation of South African athletes. Whether it’s teaching 14-year-olds how to move correctly or preparing a national squad for a World Cup, Powell’s work combines cutting-edge science, a heart for mentorship, and a relentless drive for excellence. • StroomStories: Johan Weideman Shares the Journey of Padlangs Coffee Shop

In this episode of Stroom Stories , Pieter sits down with Johan Weideman, co-founder of Padlangs Coffee Shop, for a deep and joyful conversation about cycling, coffee, kids, and community. The Go-To Guy Photo: Pieter with Johan The Coffee Shop That’s More Than a Shop “It’s a concept,” Johan insists early in the chat. “Not just a business.” Padlangs Coffee Shop is the brainchild of Johan and his wife Liesel, two spirited cyclists and community builders who envisioned more than a place to sip coffee. It’s a lifestyle hub, a space for the health-minded, the family-oriented, the early risers, and even the not-so-active who simply want a quiet space to indulge in a chocolate cake. “Our vision is grounded in active living,” Johan says. “We wanted to create a community around movement, wellness, and enjoying the good things in life, good food, good coffee, and good people.” Coffee & Culture: A Community Fuel Station The coffee isn’t an afterthought at Padlangs, it’s the cornerstone. Johan and Liesel tested fifty different beans before selecting their signature brew, which now draws coffee lovers from all over Potchefstroom. “Every morning, cyclists and runners start their day here,” Johan shares. “We open as early as 5:30 AM. You can ride, run, or walk, then come back to us for your fix.” Their Instagram-worthy coffee art and carefully crafted sourdough roosters, hearty chicken mayo toasties, and the now-famous “Boss Burger” made from Gemsbok meat make Padlangs a local favorite. They even grow their own lettuce and tomatoes, straight from their land to your plate. Kids, Tracks, and Two-Wheeled Adventures Padlangs isn’t just for adults. It’s a haven for families, with spaces thoughtfully developed for young children and adventurous teens. “We built a scooter track for toddlers and a balance-bike route for ages two to six,” Johan explains. “Then we have a 1.6 km track for walking, jogging, or biking for older kids and adults.” Their goal? Functional fun, where balance, flexibility, and strength come naturally. Bridges, rivers, and turns offer an evolving challenge. As Johan puts it, “We’re building something that gets better every month.” A pump track and obstacle course are on the horizon, and the space promises future opportunities for local school events and sponsors to get involved. No Judgement, Just Joy One of Padlangs’ guiding principles is its welcoming, judgment-free atmosphere. “You don’t have to be an athlete to belong here,” Johan says. “You can come for the chocolate cake. That’s fine. There’s no judgement, just joy.” Whether you're a Comrades Marathon contender or a grandparent on a morning stroll, you’ll find your place. The ethos of the coffee shop blends inclusivity with lifestyle, fitness with flexibility, and health with happiness. Food with Soul, Served with Intention Liesel, according to Johan, is the creative soul behind the ever-changing menu. From artisan buns to fresh roaster cakes and locally sourced ingredients, everything at Padlangs is homemade and hearty. “The Boss Burger is our showstopper,” Johan laughs. “It’s big, it’s bold, and it’s healthy too.” Add a strong coffee, a side of fresh salad, or one of Liesel’s spontaneous culinary creations, and you’ve got a plate full of purpose. Saturdays at Padlangs: More Than a Market Every Saturday, Padlangs transforms into a vibrant space of shared energy. Locals gather before sunrise to practice for races or to meet friends for coffee. Johan and Liesel run their own 5 AM session before welcoming the early crowd. “It’s become a community ritual,” Johan says. “You know the faces, you know the stories. It’s personal.” Their farm-style fresh market, no gimmicks, just produce, is open every weekend. Regulars know to come early for their orders, and even mid-week lunch pickups are gaining popularity. Active Roots, Passionate Paths Johan’s journey to Padlangs is as active as the life he now promotes. A former university athlete with a history in gymnastics, tennis, and cycling, he met his match in Liesel, whose family shares an equally impressive athletic streak. Together, they’ve built more than a business, they’ve shaped a movement. “It's not just about sport,” Johan reflects. “It’s about the values that sport instills—discipline, passion, and community.” Coming Soon: The Model Aeroplane Track Toward the end of the conversation, Johan shares an exciting addition to the Padlangs experience: model aeroplane flying. Though still in its early stages, a designated open space near the coffee shop will soon host model aircraft events. Johan envisions building a simple but engaging track for radio-controlled planes, providing enthusiasts and beginners a safe and enjoyable flying zone. The track will support basic flight maneuvers, takeoffs, turns, loops, and gentle landings. It’s not intended for competition yet, but the area is being developed to accommodate more technical flights in the future, with the possibility of workshops and demos for children and adults alike. Join the Journey Padlangs is located just 1.5 km from Potchefstroom’s town center, close enough to be convenient, far enough to feel like the countryside. Their GPS pin? Plot 91, just off the Eindhoven Road. You’ll find them on Instagram and Facebook, where community updates, events, and promotions are shared regularly. • Tested Tough: The Next-Gen Ford Ranger XLT Is a True Workhorse with City Smarts

In a market saturated with lifestyle bakkies claiming to balance rugged utility and modern comfort, Ford's Next-Gen Ranger XLT  makes a credible case for being a front-runner, particularly for South African drivers who expect their vehicles to work hard during the week and deliver on adventure over the weekend. This week, the spotlight turns to this mid-tier derivative of Ford’s latest Ranger lineup, the XLT, currently available at Daly Ford Potchefstroom  starting from R8,599 per month . A Balanced Bakkie with Brains and Brawn The XLT isn’t just about brute strength (though it has plenty). It offers two engine options: a 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel  pushing out 125kW and 405Nm of torque, and a 2.0-litre bi-turbo  delivering 154kW and 500Nm. Paired with either a 6-speed or 10-speed automatic transmission, these powertrains offer confident performance whether on tar or trail. Selectable drive modes, Normal, Eco, Tow, and Slippery, are standard, particularly on 4x4 variants, allowing the XLT to adapt to whatever the South African landscape throws at it. Fuel efficiency hovers around 7.2 to 7.7 L/100km , depending on drivetrain, which is impressive for a double cab with this level of capability. Towing capacity  maxes out at 3,500kg , firmly placing it in heavy-lifting territory. Image: Ranger XLT Technology and Safety Without Overkill The interior of the Ranger XLT feels like a considerable step up from the utilitarian cabins of earlier generations. A 10.1-inch touchscreen  infotainment unit powered by Ford’s SYNC® 4A system  sits front and centre, offering wireless Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ , plus a wireless charging pad  on models with upgrade packs. Meanwhile, safety and driver assistance tech is generous but not overwhelming. Optional features include autonomous emergency braking , lane-keeping assist , blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage , and rearview camera with parking sensors , enhancements that are appreciated whether you’re navigating narrow urban streets or towing off the grid. Image: Ranger XLT Built to Work, Styled for the Weekend Ford has clearly listened to customer feedback. The load bay features a tailgate workbench , optional cargo management system , and rear box step, tools that real-world tradespeople can use. Yet, it doesn't skimp on lifestyle touches. The XLT offers LED lighting , partial leather trim , and options like black or chrome exterior detailing , making it equally comfortable pulling up to a building site or a braai. • 3rd Royal Rumble Spin and Music Event Returns to Potch - 30 August

Potchefstroom Gears Up for CSA’s Annual Showdown CSA is back at it again, announcing the return of its high-octane combo platter, the 3rd Annual Royal Rumble Spin and Music Event, scheduled to shake up the CSA Showgrounds in Potchefstroom on 30 August 2025. If you’re into spinning tyres, loud engines, and louder music, then this is your kind of day out. Where Spinning Meets Sound It’s not just revving engines and screaming tyres. This event brings together car culture and music culture in a single, burnt-rubber-scented package. From what we can see, CSA isn’t pulling any punches this year. The lineup is stacked with spinners and entertainers who clearly don’t know what “chilled” means. Event Details Date: 30 August 2025 Venue: CSA Showgrounds, 8 Grobler St, Potchindustria, Potchefstroom, 2520 Tickets: R100 per person (launch price) Available at: Computicket , Shoprite, Checkers or @Home Who’s in the Driver’s Seat? A solid crew of spinners will be putting their tyres (and nerves) to the test. Featured names include: Katra Panjaro Austin Mano Lance XXX Porra Chadas Veejaro Sparky Yusuf CPT Reese Blaar Vaaitjie Siku Na Siku Expect smoke, stunts, and maybe a near miss or ten, standard procedure. More Than Just Tyres and Tunes While the cars will be out doing donuts that would make a bakery jealous, the music side of the event is just as hyped. DJs and performers will keep the vibe alive between spin sessions, though the full music lineup is still under wraps. Organisers promise it’s “coming soon”, which usually means they're still arguing over who gets the headline slot. Tickets are already up for grabs and are expected to fly. At R100 a pop, it’s a reasonable price for rubber-scorching action and some good local vibes. Just don’t show up late unless you want to miss half the mayhem. CSA’s Royal Rumble is shaping up to be another hectic mix of speed, sound, and the smell of burning rubber. Let’s just hope the weather plays along.

  • Planning Your Lae Veld Bushveld Wedding Near Potchefstroom

Couples choosing a “Lae Veld” (low veld) bushveld-style wedding near Potchefstroom will enjoy scenic game farms just outside town, typically within a 20 km radius. These private reserves offer natural backdrops – tall grasslands, riverine trees (e.g. Mooi River), and wildlife, that set an authentic rustic tone. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations While the ceremony may be on a remote farm, accommodations in Potchefstroom itself are plentiful and convenient. The city has a variety of hotels, guesthouses and self-catering lodges  where guests can stay comfortably. These options are efficient and accessible: after the outdoor festivities, wedding parties can return to modern facilities (with amenities like air conditioning) in town for overnight stays and celebrations. Seasonal Weather and Timing Potchefstroom has a warm, subtropical climate  with pronounced seasons . Summers (November–March) are warm and often humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. December tends to be the wettest month (averaging ~116 mm of rain) while mid-summer temperatures reach about 22–28 ° C . Winter (June–August) is cool and very dry; July can see as little as 4 mm of rain . For a bushveld wedding, the best months  are spring (September–October) or autumn (March–April) when rains have eased but the bush is still green. Couples should factor in seasonal rains: heavy summer showers are possible, so have a backup plan (tents or indoor space) in case of sudden downpours. Summer (Dec–Mar):  Warm (avg. max ~28 °C) with afternoon thunderstorms (plan for sudden rain and strong sun). Winter (Jun–Aug):  Mild and sunny, cool nights (avg. low ~10 °C in July) with virtually no rain . Shoulder seasons:  Late spring and early autumn offer temperate weather and fewer storms. Always check short-term forecasts close to the date, and consider hiring a weatherproof tent or indoor backup on the farm. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Transport and Accessibility Most game farms near Potchefstroom lie within a 10–20 km drive from town, accessible via paved rural roads. Organizers should arrange reliable transport for guests from Potchefstroom to the venue. Options include: Driving:  Many couples or guests rent cars. The trip is typically 15–20 minutes. Potchefstroom connects by the N12 highway to Johannesburg, and gravel or tar roads lead to nearby game reserves. Shuttle/Minibus:  For convenience, chartering a minibus or shuttle service is popular. It ensures guests arrive on time together and avoids parking issues at small venues. Long-distance travel:  Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport is the nearest major airport (about 140 km away). By car it’s roughly a 1h50m drive from Potchefstroom . Many out-of-town guests will fly into Johannesburg and then hire cars or take transfers to Potchefstroom. For ease, schedule a convoy from town on the wedding day or provide printed directions. Keep in mind that mobile signals can be spotty outside city areas, so download maps or arrange meeting points in advance. Always allow extra travel time during high wildfire warning seasons (summer) or if heavy rains have recently affected rural roads. Wildlife and Guest Safety A bushveld wedding means wildlife is part of the experience – but safety is paramount. Game farms in the North West province often host species such as eland, gemsbok, zebra, black wildebeest, giraffe  and various antelope . Some reserves may even have buffalo or elephants. To ensure a smooth event: Stay on designated paths and venues.  Do not wander off alone, especially near waterholes or dense bush where animals graze. Always move in groups or with a guide. Keep a safe distance from animals.  Never feed or attempt to touch wildlife . For example, parks advise remaining inside vehicles and keeping distance  if elephants or other large mammals approach . At a wedding, this translates to obeying any reserve rules, keeping gates closed, and supervising children closely. Be quiet and calm.  Loud music or shouting can startle animals. Inform guests (especially children) about the importance of respecting wildlife. Transportation caution:  If guests use self-drive, remind them that animals (like antelope or tortoises) can cross roads. Drive slowly when lights are dim or after dark. By respecting the bush, couples can share an unforgettable ceremony with gentle wildlife nearby, without incident. Remind everyone that these are wild  animals, not zoo creatures signals, fences or boundaries are minimal, and common sense must prevail. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Catering and Local Cuisine Local caterers in Potchefstroom are well-versed in both bushveld fare and international menus. Many emphasize farm-to-table, sustainable   sourcing . This means fresh regional ingredients from North West farms , perfect for a rustic wedding theme. Couples can choose from: South African classics:  Braaied meats (e.g. marinated lamb or boerewors  sausage) served with pap  (maize porridge) and spicy chakalaka  relish. These crowd-pleasers fit a bush setting and are hearty for outdoor events. Vegetarian/local produce:  Salads of seasonal vegetables, pumpkin dishes, roasted butternut and local cheeses (Potchefstroom is near maize and sunflower farms). Rooibos tea and locally roasted coffee can be served. Desserts:   Malva pudding  with custard, koeksisters  (syrup doughnuts), or melktert  are traditional favorites. Fresh fruit tarts or muffins made with local berries add a homemade touch. Many caterers offer buffet-style meals or live braai  stations, which suit informal bush weddings. Tip: ensure food is kept sheltered from dust and insects; work with caterers experienced in outdoor events. Local bakeries can supply wedding cakes or cupcakes with native flower designs. The key is combining authentic South African flavors with options for any dietary needs. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Décor and Atmosphere Decorate with the bushveld in mind. Think natural, earthy elements  that complement the surroundings. Suggestions include: Floral arrangements:  Use indigenous blooms like proteas, aloes, banksia and wildflowers. A bouquet of kangaroo paw or leucadendron ties in local flora. Potted succulents or ferns make great centerpieces or aisle decorations. Natural materials:  Wooden tables and chairs, burlap or linen runners, and jute or sisal ropes enhance a rustic vibe. Branches or driftwood can be repurposed as signage (e.g. for seating plans) or to frame the ceremony arch. Color palette:  Earth tones (terracotta, olive green, sandy beige) with pops of deep reds or golds reflect the veld. Burlap ribbons, burlap-wrapped jars, and natural twine all echo the bush theme. Lighting:  Since evenings can get quite dark in the veld, string warm fairy lights or hang lanterns from trees. Candles in glass jars along the aisle and on tables add romance. A fire pit (if allowed) creates a cozy gathering spot after dark. Incorporate small fauna motifs (e.g. cut-outs of giraffes or acacia silhouettes) sparingly to hint at the safari feel without kitsch. Overall, aim for simplicity : let the landscape shine and use décor to gently enhance it. By planning ahead with these considerations, booking transport and lodging early, timing the date around weather, and coordinating with local vendors ,couples can enjoy a flawless Lae Veld wedding. Potchefstroom’s blend of bush luxury and accessible amenities makes it an ideal location for a unique South African celebration.

Image: The Go-To Guy Waarom is jou vakkeuse in Graad 9 so belangrik? Jou toekoms begin nou. Vakke soos Wiskunde en Fisiese Wetenskappe is byvoorbeeld noodsaaklik as jy later ingenieurswese of gesondheidswetenskappe wil studeer. Sterk punte:  In watter vakke presteer jy goed of watter tipe take lê jou? Daar is baie gratis hulp daar buite. Onthou, kennis is mag .
