  • Potch Home Affairs Extends Saturday Hours for Smart ID Card Applications

The Department of Home Affairs public notice announcing extended Saturday hours for Smart ID card applications in May 2025.  Home Affairs offices across South Africa, including the Potchefstroom branch, will open for limited hours on three Saturdays this month to serve people applying for the new Smart ID cards gov.za . This initiative is part of a nationwide push to roll out the modern Smart ID card to more citizens, permanent residents, and naturalised citizens, helping phase out the old green barcoded ID books Local residents of Potchefstroom are urged to take advantage of the extra operating hours to apply for or collect their Smart IDs. Extended Saturday Operating Hours in May 2025 To accommodate the expected influx of Smart ID applications, particularly from newly eligible groups, the Department of Home Affairs has extended its operating hours on certain Saturdays in May 2025 . All Home Affairs offices that offer Smart ID card services (i.e. Live Capture offices) will be open on the following Saturdays  for a half-day each gov.za : Saturday 17 May 2025:  08:00 – 13:00 Saturday 24 May 2025:  08:00 – 13:00 Saturday 31 May 2025:  08:00 – 13:00 On these dates, Home Affairs offices nationwide will be processing Smart ID card applications and collections. The special Saturday sessions add five extra hours  of service each week during this period. The extended hours began on 17 May and will run until the last Saturday of the month, 31 May sanews.gov.za . “Extended hours over the specified weekends will allow for processing of Smart ID Card applications from naturalised citizens and permanent residents from listed countries, in possession of green barcoded ID books,”  the department explained in an official statement. In simpler terms, this is a chance for those who have been using the old ID (especially those who recently became eligible for Smart IDs) to come in on a weekend and get their new card application done. The Home Affairs Department urges all eligible people to use this opportunity . By the end of May, officials hope to have significantly increased Smart ID uptake, which in turn advances the goal of eventually phasing out the old ID format. Smart ID Services in Potchefstroom – What You Need to Know The local Home Affairs office will be participating in these extended Saturday hours. The main Home Affairs branch serving Potchefstroom is located at : Office Manager: MATHE RA Office Contact: 018 293 0732 Address: Cnr Tieroog & Curlewes Street, Potchindustria, Potchefstroom, 2531 This office is among the “live capture” offices equipped to process Smart ID card applications and issue the new cards. Normally, Home Affairs offices operate on weekdays, so these Saturday openings on 17, 24, and 31 May  provide a convenient extra window for those who can’t visit during the week. No advance appointment is strictly required  to visit the office on these Saturdays, but it is highly recommended. The Department of Home Affairs has an online booking system, the Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS), accessible via the eHomeAffairs website. In fact, the public notice includes a QR code directing people to make a booking through BABS. Residents are encouraged to book an appointment online  to avoid standing in long queues. Click here to open link: https://ehome.dha.gov.za/ehomeaffairsv3 Walk-ins may still be helped on the day, but those with bookings will typically be given priority. Booking is free and relatively easy: you create an account on eHomeAffairs, fill out the ID application form online, and then schedule a slot at your nearest branch (such as Potchefstroom) for the biometric capture and final processing of your Smart ID application. When heading to the Potchefstroom Home Affairs office for your Smart ID, remember to bring the necessary documents . If you are converting from the old green ID book, bring your current ID book along (it will be surrendered for cancellation upon issuance of your Smart ID). Fees  are also applicable: the Smart ID card costs R140  for most applicants. (However, for senior citizens aged 60 and above, the Smart ID is free , no fee is required for older applicants.) Payment can typically be made at the office by card or cash. If you applied online through eHomeAffairs, you may have the option to pay online as well. After applying, the Home Affairs office will give you a collection date or notification to pick up your new card (which usually takes about 7 to 14 working days, depending on demand). Image: Home Affairs, New ID Card Image: Home Affairs, New ID Card Smart ID Card vs. Green Barcoded ID Book The Smart ID Card  is South Africa’s modern, credit-card–sized national identity document that replaces the old green barcoded identity book . Both serve the same basic purpose, proving a person’s identity and citizenship, but the Smart ID card comes with significant improvements. It contains embedded digital technology, including a microchip that securely stores the holder’s biometric data (such as fingerprints and a photo) en.wikipedia.org . By contrast, the old green ID book is a paper booklet with a printed barcode and laminated photo, which over the years has become increasingly vulnerable to damage, forgery and identity fraud businesstech.co.za . In fact, Home Affairs officials note that the outdated paper IDs are “dated and insecure” , whereas the smart cards offer advanced security features that make them far harder to duplicate or tamper with. The new card’s durable polycarbonate material and digital safeguards (like fingerprint verification and encrypted data on the chip) provide greater protection against identity theft  than the old books ever could. Aside from improved security, the Smart ID card is also more convenient. It’s compact enough to fit in a wallet, and it’s designed for easy electronic verification. Like the old ID book, the Smart ID is used for everyday identification needs, from voting and opening bank accounts to applying for passports or driver’s license. The key difference is that the smart card allows these processes to be more secure and efficient in the digital era. The Department of Home Affairs began introducing Smart IDs in 2013 as part of a high-tech modernization of civic services en.wikipedia.org , aiming to eventually replace the 38 million+ green ID booklets  in circulation with the new cards. Will Smart IDs Replace the Old ID Book? Yes, the Smart ID card is ultimately meant to replace the green barcoded ID book , but there is no immediate deadline  by which South Africans must swap their old ID for a smart card. The Department of Home Affairs has long-term plans  to phase out and discontinue the green ID books, but it will only invalidate the old ID documents once Smart IDs are widely accessible to everyone . In other words, your green ID book remains a legal form of identification for now and will “not be invalid anytime soon” . Home Affairs officials have reiterated that South Africans should not panic about an abrupt cutoff; the phase-out will be a gradual process over the coming years businesstech.co.za . According to Home Affairs’ strategic plans, the goal is to expand Smart ID coverage to all eligible South Africans by around 2029 , after which the old ID books can be fully discontinued. Already, new first-time ID applicants receive Smart ID cards by default, and the green book is no longer being issued under normal circumstances. However, millions of citizens, especially older individuals and those in remote areas, still hold the green book. The government has set targets to roll out Smart IDs rapidly  (for example, issuing 2.5 million cards in the 2023/24 year), but until those targets are met and every Home Affairs office is equipped to handle smart ID applications efficiently, the green books will remain in use businesstech.co.za . In summary:  the Smart ID will eventually replace the old ID, but there is currently no fixed deadline  by which you must convert, and your green ID book will continue to be accepted in the meantime. Why Having a Smart ID Card Matters There are several important reasons why South African citizens, naturalised citizens, and permanent residents should ensure they have a valid Smart ID card: Security and Fraud Prevention:  The primary motivation for the Smart ID roll-out is to combat ID fraud and identity theft. The old green ID books, being paper-based, can be easily damaged, altered or forged , making them a weak link in verifying identity. This has led to widespread fraud, a 2024 analysis found the green ID book was the most targeted document in Africa for fraudulent activities , with hundreds of thousands of fake or suspicious ID books detected businesstech.co.za . The Smart ID card’s high-tech security features virtually eliminate forgery : the biometric fingerprint verification and encrypted chip data mean that only the rightful owner can use the card. For the cardholder, this greatly reduces the risk of someone stealing your identity to, for example, open a fraudulent bank account or claim benefits in your name. Personal Convenience and Access to Services:  A valid ID (either the book or card) is essential for daily life in South Africa, you need it to register for school, apply for jobs, open bank accounts, sign cell phone contracts, access government services, vote, and more . The Smart ID card is increasingly becoming the standard for identification. Banks, government agencies and other institutions now routinely accept the Smart ID, and some services (such as online applications through eHomeAffairs) are only available to Smart ID holders  (because the system verifies your ID number against the new card system). By having the Smart ID, citizens and residents ensure they can fully access the convenience of new digital services, for instance, applying for documents online or using automated kiosks, which were not possible with the old ID book. Future Compatibility:  As South Africa moves towards e-government and digital integration, the Smart ID card will be central to future identification systems. It lays the groundwork for digital IDs and remote authentication  in the future mybroadband.co.za . In short, switching to the Smart ID card prepares individuals for a future where proof of identity will be increasingly electronic and securely verified. Officials also note that phasing out the flimsy green book is a matter of national security, the integrity of the country’s identity system is stronger when everyone has the robust Smart ID . Home Affairs is especially encouraging naturalised citizens  (people who acquired South African citizenship after immigrating) and permanent residents  to get Smart IDs. Until recently, these groups had been excluded from the Smart ID system due to technical barriers, effectively forcing them to stick with the old green ID books iol.co.za . The department has now removed those barriers as part of its digital reforms, finally allowing an estimated 1.4 million  naturalised citizens and permanent residents to apply for Smart ID cards for the first time. Bringing these groups into the Smart ID fold is not only a matter of equal treatment, but also strengthens the overall system by ensuring every legal resident of South Africa has a secure, modern ID iol.co.za . Image: Home Affairs, Green ID Book Rollout Progress and What’s Next Home Affairs officials are calling the extension of services and inclusion of all residents in the Smart ID program a big step forward. Modernizing the ID system is a key part of South Africa’s National Development Plan, and it also aligns with global trends in secure identification. The ongoing Smart ID card rollout, alongside related initiatives like biometric passports and digital driver’s licences, is gradually transforming how South Africans prove who they are. For the community in Potchefstroom , this national initiative has very practical local benefits. Residents who have been holding onto green ID books (perhaps out of habit or because they had no alternative) now have a chance to upgrade to a far more secure credential. The extended Saturday hours are expected to reduce the usual weekday congestion at the Potchefstroom Home Affairs office, making it easier for people to be served. It’s an opportunity especially tailored for those who work or attend classes on weekdays (such as university students or working professionals in Potchefstroom) to get their new IDs without having to take time off. The Department of Home Affairs has made it clear that the days of the green ID book are numbered. By steadily increasing Smart ID uptake, they aim to eventually retire the old books completely. For now, Potch residents can rest assured that their green IDs are still valid, but there’s no denying that the Smart ID card is the future of identification in South Africa . With the local Home Affairs office offering extra hours this month and all citizens and legal residents now eligible to apply, it’s an ideal time to make the switch to the Smart ID card. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #stroomstories #potchgaette #SmartID

Every year on 20 May, the world pauses to celebrate World Bee Day, but this isn’t just about honey and hives. It’s a global reminder that bees, our planet’s tiny pollinators, are in serious trouble, and so are we if we don’t act. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The importance of these tiny pollinators Bees play a critical role in our ecosystems, pollinating nearly 75% of the world’s food crops. From apples and almonds to coffee and cucumbers, much of what fills our plates depends on their tireless work. Yet, due to pesticide use, habitat loss, disease, and climate change, bee populations are declining at an alarming rate. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations What's the buzz about? • Reporting a Crime : 10 Steps to Do It Safely and Responsibly

Crime remains a serious concern, with high rates of theft, assault, and other violent crimes affecting communities nationwide. For residents, knowing how to report a crime safely and effectively can make a real difference, helping authorities respond quickly and increasing the chances of justice being served. Whether you witness a crime or fall victim to one, following the right steps can protect both you and others. Below is a step-by-step guide to reporting a crime responsibly while keeping yourself safe. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations 1. Ensure Your Safety First Your personal safety comes before anything else. Do not attempt to intervene in a crime in progress. Instead, move to a safe location away from the threat before taking any further action. By staying out of harm’s way, you’ll be in a better position to report what you’ve seen and avoid becoming another victim. 2. Call the Authorities Contact the appropriate authorities as soon as you are safe. In South Africa, dial 10111  to reach the police for any crime-related emergency. Depending on the situation, you might also need to call other emergency services, such as the fire department if there’s a fire or medical responders if someone is injured. If you have access to a private security company or community safety patrol, you can alert them as well, but always ensure the police are notified for official action. Promptly getting professional help on the way is critical. 3. Stay Calm and Clear When speaking to emergency operators or police, remain calm and speak clearly. Give a concise, factual account of what is happening or what you witnessed, without exaggeration or speculation. By staying composed and sticking to the facts, you help the dispatcher or officers understand the situation quickly and accurately, which allows them to respond more effectively. 4. Give the Exact Location Provide the exact location of the incident to authorities. Share the street name, neighborhood or suburb, and any nearby landmarks that can help responders find the scene quickly. If possible, use technology to your advantage: for example, send GPS coordinates via a smartphone or drop a pin on a digital map. The more precise your location information, the faster help can arrive at the right place. 5. Describe the Incident Explain clearly what happened. As soon as you’re in contact with authorities, describe the type of crime or incident that occurred. Include key details such as what exactly took place, the approximate time it happened, and who was involved. Answer the operator’s questions about the incident’s what, when, and who to the best of your ability. This overview helps police understand the severity and nature of the situation immediately. 6. Note Descriptions Be ready to give detailed descriptions of the people, vehicles, or objects involved in the incident. It’s a good idea to write down or memorize important features while they are still fresh in your mind. Key details to note include: People : Gender, approximate age, clothing, hairstyle or hair color, height, build, and any distinctive features like tattoos or accents. Vehicles : Color, make and model, license plate number, and any noticeable damage or markings. Objects : Weapons or tools used (for instance, a knife or firearm), and specific items taken or left behind (such as bags, electronics, or other valuables). These details are extremely helpful to law enforcement. The more accurately you can describe suspects or evidence, the better the chances of officers identifying and locating them. 7. Take Photos Safely Photographic evidence can be valuable, but only if it can be obtained without putting yourself at risk. If it’s safe to do so, consider taking photos or a short video of the scene, suspects, or vehicles from a secure position. Never endanger yourself for a picture.  If the situation is dangerous or unpredictable, it’s better to stay back and let the authorities handle evidence gathering. Any images or videos you do capture should be shared with the police as soon as possible. 8. Request a Case Number If you file an official report with the police, remember to ask for a case number (sometimes called a reference number). This number is your proof that the incident has been recorded. It allows you to follow up on the case later and is often required if you need to provide documentation for insurance claims or victim support services. Keep this number in a safe place and use it when you want to check on the investigation’s progress. 9. Follow-Up Cooperation After the initial report, be prepared to cooperate with law enforcement during any follow-up. Share any additional information or evidence that you recall later or discover, such as new witness contacts or security camera footage. If police officers or detectives reach out with further questions, respond promptly and truthfully. Your cooperation can significantly aid the investigation. By being available to clarify details or provide a statement, you help ensure the case is handled thoroughly and increase the likelihood of a positive outcome. 10. Report Anonymously Fear of retaliation or involvement should not stop you from reporting a crime. In South Africa, you have the option to report information anonymously if you are uncomfortable revealing your identity. Use the Crime Stop  hotline (dial 08600 10111) or the official SAPS Crime Stop smartphone app to submit anonymous tips. These channels allow you to pass on crucial information to the authorities without having to give your personal details. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Remember, even anonymous information can help prevent crime and bring perpetrators to justice, so it’s important to speak up. Staying alert and acting responsibly when reporting incidents is vital to community safety. Your safe and accurate report could help prevent further crime and protect others. By following these steps and working with law enforcement, every resident can contribute to a safer community and ensure that justice is served. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #Safetyandsecurity

  • Electric Atmosphere at NWU Potchefstroom Campus Open Day

With smoke machines, stage lights, and the unmistakable sound of a brass band echoing across campus, the North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus pulled out all the stops for its annual Open Day on Saturday. Aimed at showcasing what the university has to offer to prospective students and their families, the event drew a large crowd, from high school learners and teachers to curious parents, all eager to experience the NWU environment firsthand. Mascot Magic: Eagi Steals the Spotlight The star of the day was undoubtedly Eagi , the university’s eagle mascot, who made a grand entrance and struck a signature pose on the main stage. Clad in a purple NWU-branded shirt and oversized turquoise sneakers, Eagi brought youthful flair and a touch of comedy to the formal setting. Children posed for selfies, students cheered, and visitors lined up to grab a photo with the friendly mascot. Eagi’s performance added a layer of excitement to what was otherwise a well-organised educational affair. Hands-On Experience for Future Students Visitors were offered guided tours of key academic and student life spaces, including science labs, lecture halls, residences, and recreational areas. Each faculty had booths or open classrooms staffed by lecturers and student ambassadors, ready to explain entry requirements, subject choices, and career prospects. Information desks provided guidance on bursaries and financial aid, while pop-up workshops offered interactive glimpses into NWU’s learning style, from mock law trials to engineering displays and health science simulations. A Showcase of Campus Culture Beyond academics, the event doubled as a display of student culture. The NWU brass band filled the central square with upbeat tunes, and student societies and performers took to the stage to entertain the crowd. Music, dance, and storytelling were blended with promotional talks, giving attendees a well-rounded sense of campus life. Speeches from university representatives highlighted the institution’s values and growth, but were balanced by informal chats between current students and visitors. • Fallen Gunners Remembered at National Memorial Service in Potchefstroom

The South African Gunners’ Association held a solemn national memorial service on Sunday, 18 May 2025, at the National Gunners Memorial in Potchefstroom, paying tribute to the country’s fallen artillery soldiers. Scores of veterans, serving military personnel, and families gathered to honor their sacrifice, with wreaths laid in remembrance of their contributions to South Africa’s freedom. The ceremony featured a military parade, a dignified two-minute silence for reflection, and the firing of an artillery salute, symbolizing both respect for the fallen and the enduring legacy of their service. National Gunners Memorial Historical Significance of the National Gunners Memorial (Est. 1952) The National Gunners Memorial in Potchefstroom has been a cornerstone of military remembrance in South Africa for over 70 years. It was unveiled on 10 May 1952 by the then Chief of Staff of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Christiaan “Matie” de Wet du Toit defenceweb.co.za , and was originally dedicated “to the glory of God and the memory of all Gunners who lost their lives in two World Wars, 1914–1918; 1939–1945” . The design of the memorial reflects its artillery heritage: three vintage World War I field guns and a World War II anti-aircraft gun flank a central stone monument, standing guard over the site . F rom its earliest days, the memorial has served as a gathering point for remembrance, the first annual commemoration service was held here in May 1953, drawing hundreds of gunners and family members in tribute gunners.org.za . Over the decades, the monument’s purpose has expanded to honor fallen gunners from all conflicts: after the 1970s border wars, for example, additional plaques were installed to inscribe the names of artillerymen who paid the supreme sacrifice, and new names have continued to be added with each era of service. Today, the National Gunners Memorial stands not only as a historic tribute to those lost in the World Wars, but as a living memorial bearing the names of all known South African gunners who died in the line of duty, a sacred roll of honour that grows as history unfolds. Highlights from the Memorial Service Ceremony   Wreaths adorn the National Gunners Memorial at Potchefstroom during the memorial service, a symbol of gratitude to the fallen.  The 2025 memorial service was marked by precise military pageantry and poignant tributes. An SANDF honor guard led a procession and parade onto the grounds, their boots and drums setting a respectful cadence. In a traditional wreath-laying ceremony, senior officers, veterans, and relatives stepped forward to place floral wreaths at the foot of the monument, each bloom a testament to a life lost in service southafricatoday.net . The assembled crowd then stood in reverent silence for two minutes, heads bowed under the late-morning sun as they remembered comrades no longer present southafricatoday.net . Finally, the stillness was broken by the thunderous report of a gun salute: an artillery detachment fired a volley of blank rounds that echoed across the parade ground. The crack of the guns served as a solemn salute to the fallen gunners, a ritual both honoring their sacrifice and resonating with the very military tradition the Gunners’ Association strives to preserve. National Gunners Memorial Brigadier General Mafune’s Tribute: “A Pledge to Those Who Sacrificed” One of the most moving moments of the service came during the keynote address by Brigadier General Lufuno Mafune, a senior SANDF artillery officer. Speaking to the gathered crowd of soldiers, veterans, and families, Mafune emphasized the enduring importance of remembering those who fought for the nation’s liberty and security. The freedoms South Africans enjoy today, he noted, were hard-won by the courage of men and women who answered the call of duty. “This memorial stands as a pledge to those who sacrificed when sacrifice was not fashionable,”  Brig Gen Mafune said, describing the monument as a perpetual commitment to honor those who served even in times when their service went unheralded southafricatoday.net . His words underscored the core message of the day: that the debt owed to fallen heroes is timeless. The audience listened in respectful silence as Mafune reminded all present that every name etched in the memorial’s stone represents a story of valor and selflessness. In pledging never to forget these sacrifices, the gathering affirmed the very pledge the Brigadier General so eloquently put into words. Honoring a Recent Fallen Gunner: Lance Bombardier Itumeleng Moreo This year’s memorial service carried special significance as it recognized the recent losses suffered by South Africa’s military in ongoing African peacekeeping operations. Lance Bombardier Itumeleng Macdonald Moreo, a 37-year-old artillery NCO from Mahikeng, was one of 14 South African National Defence Force members killed during fierce fighting against M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo earlier this year defenceweb.co.za . His death in that January 2025 battle, alongside thirteen comrades, reverberated through the SANDF and the Gunners’ Association alike. In recognition of his sacrifice and his service as a gunner, Moreo’s name will be inscribed on the National Gunners Memorial’s roll of honour, joining those of the fallen from previous generations gunners.org.za . This addition ensures that his valor, like that of the many gunners before him, is formally memorialized in the same hallowed space. As the ceremony proceeded, attendees were mindful that the legacy of bravery commemorated on the Potchefstroom memorial now extends to include this newest generation of soldiers who gave their lives far from home. For the family, friends, and fellow soldiers of Lance Bombardier Moreo, seeing his name etched in stone stands as a solemn reminder that his sacrifice, too, will never be forgotten by the artillery fraternity or the nation he served. National Gunners Memorial The South African Gunners’ Association: Preserving Memory and Heritage Since 1945 The memorial service at Potchefstroom is the culmination of efforts by the South African Gunners’ Association, an organization that has devoted itself to honoring fallen gunners and upholding artillery heritage for nearly eight decades. Founded in 1945, in the closing months of World War II, by returning South African artillery veterans gunners.org.za , the Association was established to unite past and present gunners into a proud community of remembrance and support. According to its mission statement, the Gunners’ Association seeks to “promote Gunner traditions and preserve Gunner heritage,”  while also providing camaraderie and welfare support to gunners and their families. This mandate is evident not only in the annual National Gunners Memorial service, but in numerous other activities the Association organizes: from restoring historic artillery pieces and maintaining memorial sites, to hosting regional remembrance ceremonies and educating new generations about the sacrifices of their predecessors. Over the years, the Gunners’ Association has worked closely with the SANDF to ensure that memorials like the one in Potchefstroom are well kept and that the names of fallen artillerymen and -women are duly recorded and honored. By fostering fellowship among veterans and active-duty members of the artillery corps, the Association keeps alive the spirit of unity and dedication that these soldiers shared. Through these efforts, the legacy of South Africa’s gunners, their traditions, their service, and above all their sacrifice, continues to be preserved for posterity. Remembrance in a Time of Ongoing Conflict As Africa continues to grapple with armed conflicts and peacekeeping challenges, the commemorative service in Potchefstroom carries a profound contemporary relevance. The ceremony unfolded against the backdrop of current missions and skirmishes, from the volatile Great Lakes region, where South African peacekeepers like Moreo have been deployed, to other conflict zones on the continent. This year’s memorial service served as a poignant reminder that the sacrifices being honored are not only those of a distant past, but also of present-day battlefields. The reality was underscored by the recent losses in the DRC, which lent a somber immediacy to the day’s tributes. In an era when instability and insurgencies persist in parts of Africa, the pledge embodied by the National Gunners Memorial feels especially urgent and solemn. The gathering in Potchefstroom reaffirmed a national commitment: to remember the fallen, to cherish the peace for which they fought, and to support the men and women who continue to don the uniform in defense of that peace. Click on the button below for JB Marks Video: As the last notes of the South African national anthem drifted into the autumn air and attendees slowly dispersed, the towering memorial stood watch, its plaques reflecting both history and the present, a lasting symbol of gratitude and hope amid the uncertainties of a conflict-prone world. #TheGoToGuy #Potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #MilitaryHeritage #NationalPride #HonourAndDuty

  • Unused Solar Geysers Gather Dust in Lusaka Hall Amidst Calls for Accountability

At an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) meeting on 8 May 2025 at Lusaka Hall in the JB Marks Municipality, residents from Wards 4, 16, and 19 were shocked to discover hundreds of boxed solar water-heating systems occupying the entire hall space, forcing attendees to sit outside in the cold. These geysers, originally intended for installation in low-income households under a national programme, have instead gathered dust for years This revelation has prompted a renewed call by the Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus for urgent municipal accountability, including a full audit, installation progress report, and immediate action to deliver the long-delayed benefits to the intended recipients. The National Solar Water Heater Programme: A Brief Overview Launched in 2010, the National Solar Water Heater Programme (NSWHP) was designed to install five million solar geysers by 2030, with a particular focus on underserved, low-income communities. By reducing electricity usage in households, the initiative aimed to relieve pressure on the national power grid, lower municipal Eskom bills, and cut household energy costs while promoting environmental sustainability. By the 2018/2019 financial year, the Department of Energy had procured more than 87,000 units for distribution across 19 municipalities, including JB Marks. However, implementation challenges have meant that many of these geysers remain uninstalled. Delays, Storage, and Fruitless Expenditure In the case of JB Marks, several hundred solar water-heating units remain unused inside Lusaka Hall. Photographs from the scene show dusty cylindrical tanks, collapsed cardboard boxes marked “Glass Vacuum Tube,” and steel frames piled haphazardly, pointing to years of neglect. The situation has implications beyond inconvenience: exposure to dust, weather, or theft could render many units unusable, undermining their original purpose. Permanent security guards have been stationed at the hall since at least 2018 to protect the equipment, an added cost to the municipality. Nationally, storage costs for unused geysers have exceeded R300 million. DA’s Push for Action and Transparency In response to the ongoing inaction, the DA caucus in JB Marks has called on the Executive Mayor and Municipal Manager to urgently investigate the matter and present a detailed report to the municipal council. Their requests include: An audit to verify the current stock and condition of all stored units; A report detailing how many geysers were installed, where, and by whom; A transparent installation schedule prioritizing indigent elderly households; Disciplinary or contractual action against those responsible for implementation delays; Engagement with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) to release any remaining funds and support training for local installers. The DA Councilor also informed this publication that they had, in 2019, provide a list of beneficiaries and job candidates for the installation phase. They further stated that ward councillors in Ikageng agreed the programme should begin by serving the elderly. A detailed list of qualifying homes was submitted to municipal authorities that same year, but the process has remained stalled since. Environmental and Economic Impact at Stake Each solar geyser installed could significantly reduce a household's reliance on electricity, lowering monthly costs and contributing to the municipality’s broader climate commitments. The units are not only a means of social upliftment but are also essential tools in JB Marks’ energy-efficiency strategy. Without timely installation, these benefits are lost. Residents continue to rely on electricity, gas, or wood to heat water, incurring higher costs and reinforcing energy poverty. The discovery at Lusaka Hall is more than a logistical oversight, it highlights the broader inefficiencies that can derail well-intended public programmes. As winter grips Ikageng, questions grow louder: Why are geysers collecting dust while households go without hot water? Who will be held accountable for the delays? And how soon will action follow? Beyond the loss of essential energy-saving benefits, residents have voiced deep frustration over the long-term use of their local hall as a storage facility. Speaking to the DA caucus, they shared that Lusaka Hall, meant to serve as a vital community space, has been effectively out of use for years. Important events such as weddings, funerals, and community meetings could not be hosted at the venue due to the presence of the solar geysers, further limiting its role as a shared civic resource. For now, the community continues to wait, for warmth, for restored access to their hall, and for the fulfilment of promises tied to the solar geyser programme. All information and photos was provided by Johan Zerwick – DA Councillor Link to the DA Publication: https://nw.da.org.za/2025/05/unused-solar-geysers-collect-dust-in-lusaka-hall-while-households-suffer #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #stroomstories #potchgazette #SolarGeysers #LusakaHall

  • Honouring the Resilient Nurses of Lenmed Mooimed on International Nurses Day 2025

Honouring the Real Heroes of Healthcare On 12 May 2025, Lenmed Mooimed Private Hospital in Potchefstroom joined the global healthcare community in marking International Nurses Day with a celebration filled with gratitude, reflection, and deep appreciation. Now, just days later, on 16 May, the impact of that day still resonates throughout the corridors of the hospital. This year’s tribute served not only to thank the nurses for their unwavering service, but also to remind everyone just how vital and multifaceted their role truly is. Image: Lenmed Mooimed A Celebration of Strength and Compassion The event at Lenmed Mooimed was not just symbolic,it was heartfelt. The campaign asked the kind of questions that tug at one’s emotions: “Who would hold our loved one’s hand when we couldn’t?”  Nurses, as the hospital rightly highlighted, are the ones who provide comfort in chaos, calm in crisis, and hope when despair threatens to take over. Throughout the celebration, the message was clear, nurses are the silent strength behind every recovery. They are the ones who walk beside us during our most vulnerable moments, providing care that extends far beyond medical procedures. Whether celebrating a recovery or providing quiet comfort in darker times, they are always present. Nurses: The Core of Our Health System This year’s Nurses Day also reminded the community of the enormous responsibility nurses carry daily. At Lenmed Mooimed, these professionals sacrifice personal time and family moments to serve others. It’s a demanding calling that requires emotional strength, technical expertise, and unmatched dedication. Their impact goes far beyond hospital rooms. Nurses act as: Patient Advocates , standing up for the needs and rights of those in their care. Educators , empowering patients and families with the knowledge they need to heal and thrive. Coordinators , working closely with doctors and multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless, holistic care. Community Champions , promoting health and wellness even beyond the hospital walls. This versatility makes them the heartbeat of any effective healthcare system . Image: Lenmed Mooimed Why the World Celebrates International Nurses Day Observed globally on 12 May, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, International Nurses Day was established to recognise the immeasurable contributions of nurses. The 2025 theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,”  reinforced the global call to invest in nursing as a way to build stronger, healthier communities. At Lenmed Mooimed, this message hit home. Nurses are not just caregivers; they are essential to the strength and sustainability of our healthcare system. Post-Celebration Reflections and Acknowledgements Nurses at Mooimed were praised not only for their professionalism but also for their humanity, for the small, often invisible acts of kindness that go unrecorded yet mean the world to patients and their families. “There are no words big enough to thank you for your small acts of kindness that often go unseen, for every patient that leaves our facility healed.” Image: Lenmed Mooimed A Legacy of Care As the world moves beyond the day of celebration, the legacy of International Nurses Day 2025 lives on in the hearts of the Lenmed Mooimed team. It served as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact nurses have, not just once a year, but every single day. Their work may often happen behind the scenes, but their influence is front and center in every life they touch. To the nurses of Lenmed Mooimed: Thank you for all that you do. You are, indeed, the heart of healing. Businesses, schools, families, churches, your gran, everyone’s invited to grab a bin bag and get cracking. And if you’re feeling left out, don’t worry. To get involved, you can collect free garbage bags from any of these helpful spots: Feisty Communications, 33 Klinkenberg Street Entrutech, 13 Palmiet Street Engen Mooirivier Junction Engen Bult Garage And once you're done scrubbing your corner of the city, take those before-and-after pics and post them with the hashtag #ProPotchCleanUp. Flex your cleanup game. What About E-Waste? Still hoarding that dead printer from varsity? Maybe a drawer full of prehistoric Nokias? Now’s the time to let go. Entrutech at 13 Palmiet Street is accepting electronic waste. Some devices will be repurposed and donated, others recycled. No judgement. Who’s Pitching In? A bunch of companies have already pledged to take charge of cleaning up specific entry points into Potch. But there’s still room for more. Whether you're a business, a resident, or just someone with a conscience, you’re encouraged to tidy up wherever you live, work or loiter. Want In?
