Unused Solar Geysers Gather Dust in Lusaka Hall Amidst Calls for Accountability At an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) meeting on 8 May 2025 at Lusaka Hall in the JB Marks Municipality, residents from Wards 4, 16, and 19 were shocked to discover hundreds of boxed solar water-heating systems occupying the entire hall space, forcing attendees to sit outside in the cold. These geysers, originally intended for installation in low-income households under a national programme, have instead gathered dust for years This revelation has prompted a renewed call by the Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus for urgent municipal accountability, including a full audit, installation progress report, and immediate action to deliver the long-delayed benefits to the intended recipients. Delays, Storage, and Fruitless Expenditure In the case of JB Marks, several hundred solar water-heating units remain unused inside Lusaka Hall. Photographs from the scene show dusty cylindrical tanks, collapsed cardboard boxes marked “Glass Vacuum Tube,” and steel frames piled haphazardly, pointing to years of neglect. The situation has implications beyond inconvenience: exposure to dust, weather, or theft could render many units unusable, undermining their original purpose. Permanent security guards have been stationed at the hall since at least 2018 to protect the equipment, an added cost to the municipality. Nationally, storage costs for unused geysers have exceeded R300 million. The DA Councilor also informed this publication that they had, in 2019, provide a list of beneficiaries and job candidates for the installation phase. They further stated that ward councillors in Ikageng agreed the programme should begin by serving the elderly. From sideline support at Mooirivier to dominant performances at De Leeukuil, Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub delivered a weekend filled with purpose, pride, and power. The weekend’s momentum began early on Friday , 30 May 2025, when members of Potch Dorp Rugbyklub paid a special visit to Laerskool Mooirivier . Their goal? To uplift and support the school’s under-9 rugby teams ahead of their games against visiting opponents from Kathu. That spirit carried over into Saturday , 31 May, as Potch Dorp Rugbyklub hosted their next round of President and Neser League  matches at Piet Bosman Park . With all three men’s teams scheduled to play, the venue quickly filled with anticipation, supporters, and unmistakable maroon pride. It was a tight contest from start to finish, and the one-point difference reflected the intensity and grit shown by both sides. The crowd erupted as the final whistle blew, recognising the effort that secured the home win. Then came the headline event, the first team showdown . Maar op Vrydag, 30 Mei 2025, het hulle hul huis en harte vir die Potchefstroom gemeenskap oop gemaak om ‘n dieper kykie te bied. ‘n Opedag in die letterlike sin van die woord.  Besoekers is vriendelik by die hek ontvang Hoekom juis 'n Opedag? “Die doel van vandag is om die gemeenskap uit te nooi vir ‘n kykie agter die skerms. Om te sien hoe ons [as Abraham Kriel] werk en leef, en om die gaping tussen dít wat die kinderhuis werklik doen en dié van Liggiefees ‘n bietjie kleiner te maak”, het Caro Schoen, Maatskaplike Werker by Abraham Kriel, gesê. Potchefstroom locals can look forward to a night of art, healing, and a bit of good old South African humour at Pesto’s on 6 June 2025. The event, billed as a “Mosaic Evening,” promises a unique mix of creativity and comfort for anyone keen to reconnect with themselves and others. An Evening of Pieces and Purpose Life has a knack for breaking us into pieces, but on this evening, those pieces will be put to good use. Guests will be treated to a heartfelt talk by Haroldine Hill, who comes all the way from Potch Trauma Recovery. She’s been around the block and back, and she’s got a few good stories to tell, tissues optional, but probably a good idea. Hands-On Healing and Artistic Flair After the talk, attendees will roll up their sleeves (not literally, unless they want to) for a hands-on mosaic project. The idea is to symbolise hope and restoration, something we could all use, let’s be honest. And because no good story or creative session should happen on an empty stomach, dinner and drinks are included in the ticket price. Hierdie insluitend 'n onvoorsiene watervoorsieningsteurnis, 'n beplande watersluiting, padinfrastruktuurwerk en sportinisiatiewe vir die jeug. Hieronder volg 'n volledige samevatting van die nuutste verwikkelinge. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Noodopdatering: Watertoevoer onderbreek weens oorstroming by hoofpomp Inwoners van Potchefstroom en omliggende areas is op Sondag, 1 Junie 2025, dringend in kennis gestel van ’n onderbreking in watervoorsiening weens ’n oorstromingsvoorval by die Ventersdorpweg-hoofwaterpomp. Die oorsaak van die voorval is ’n meganiese fout op Pomp 1, wat tot gevolg gehad het dat die hele pompstasie buite werking is. Die areas wat tans sonder water sit of moontlike onderbrekings ervaar, sluit die volgende in: Dassierand Kannonierspark Witrand Hospitaal Promosa Mohadin Wes-Ikageng (alle uitbreidings) Munisipale tegniese spanne is reeds op die toneel besig met ondersoeke om die omvang van die skade aan pompe en elektriese toerusting vas te stel. Inwoners word versoek om water spaarsamig te gebruik totdat verdere kommunikasie uitgereik word. Die munisipaliteit het omverskoning aangebied vir die ongerief en beloof om op hoogte te hou soos meer inligting beskikbaar raak. Hierdie sluiting vorm deel van tegniese ondersoeke en voorbereidings vir 'n toekomstige infrastruktuur-opgradering by dieselfde Ventersdorpweg-hoofwaterpompasem. Die volgende gebiede sal weer geraak word: Dassierand Kannonierspark Witrand Hospitaal Promosa Mohadin Wes-Ikageng (alle uitbreidings) Daarby sal die Eersterandjies-reservoirs  ook beïnvloed word, wat waterdruk verder kan verlaag of toevoer beperk. Die publiek word aangeraai om betyds voorsiening te maak deur water op te gaar en om waterverbruik so laag as moontlik te hou voor en tydens die sluiting. Tot datumn is ons nie seker of die plaasvind na gister se gebeure nie. Image: JB Marks Padwerke en verkeersveranderinge: Plaveiprojek op belangrike kruising Munisipale padonderhoud gaan voort met die derde fase van die plavei-projek, wat tans fokus op die kruising van Chief Albert Luthuli- en Thabo Mbeki-rybane . Werk het op 31 Mei 2025 begin en inwoners kan tydelike verkeersvertragings verwag. Volgens die voorlopige planne sal die binneste deel van die kruising eerste aangepak word, met die glybane wat oop sal bly en tydelik soos 'n verkeersirkel sal funksioneer. Inwoners word aangeraai om alternatiewe roetes te oorweeg en bedagsaam te wees teenoor padwerkers. Elektrisiteitsonderbreking: Voorlopige probleem met kragherlaaisisteem Op Sondag, 1 Junie 2025, is inwoners gewaarsku oor 'n tegniese probleem met die aankoop van voorafbetaalde elektrisiteit. Die munisipaliteit werk daaraan om die fout te identifiseer en op te los. In die tussentyd word inwoners versoek om nie nuwe elektrisiteit aan te koop totdat die stelsel weer funksioneer nie. Verdere inligting sal verskaf word sodra beskikbaar. Jeugsportinisiatief: Voorbereiding vir Cashibe Burgemeestersbeker Op dieselfde dag is daar ook verslag gedoen oor proewe wat gehou is vir netbal en sokker  in voorbereiding vir die komende Cashibe Burgemeestersbeker. Hierdie inisiatief stel daarop om jongmense aktief en betrokke te hou, en bied ’n veilige ruimte vir ontwikkeling, vaardigheidsbevordering en deelname aan sport op gemeenskapsvlak. Die energieke betrokkenheid van jong deelnemers dien as bemoedigende bewys van die positiewe impak wat sulke projekte op plaaslike vlak het. Die volledige speelskedule vir die toernooi sal binnekort bekendgemaak word. Image: JB Marks Gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid en Raadsaktiwiteit: Fokus op Marikana en Rockville Op 31 Mei 2025 het die JB Marks Plaaslike Munisipaliteit ’n produktiewe gemeenskapsvergadering gehad met inwoners van die Marikana  en Rockville  informele nedersettings. Tydens dié betrokkenheid is verskeie dringende diensleweringskwessies na vore gebring, insluitend onwettige elektrisiteitsverbindings, watertekorte en die toestand van grondpaaie. Inwoners het hul bekommernisse gedeel, waarna die munisipale span daarop gereageer het met omvattende antwoorde en ’n duidelike padkaart vir volhoubare oplossings. Hierdie inisiatief vorm deel van die munisipaliteit se pogings om lewenskwaliteit in agtergeblewe gemeenskappe te verbeter deur direkte gesprek en beplanning saam met inwoners. This planned outage is part of critical maintenance and inspection work at the Ventersdorp Road Main Water Pump Station . Die 1oz silwer munt het ’n indrukwekkende R53,200 bereik. Die 1oz brons munt is afgesluit op R30,200. Verder is die eerste 30 van slegs 100 beperkte uitgawe goue munte teen R124,000 elk beskikbaar gestel en binne minute uitverkoop.
