Wie is Prop nou eintlik?

  • South Africa Women Edge India by 3 Wickets in nail-biting match

In a thrilling finish that will go down as one of the great moments in South African women’s cricket, the Proteas stunned India with a three-wicket victory  in Visakhapatnam. It was a match that had everything - pressure, power-hitting, and poise, and at the heart of it all stood Nadine de Klerk , who delivered a career-defining performance to guide her team home. Early Setbacks for the Proteas South Africa won the toss and opted to field first, hoping to take advantage of early movement on a humid evening. Their bowlers didn’t disappoint, spinners Nonkululeko Mlaba  and Chloe Tryon  shared five wickets between them, while Marizanne Kapp  and Nadine de Klerk  kept India in check during the middle overs. India’s innings, however, was anchored by a brilliant 94 from Richa Ghosh , who came to the rescue after her side collapsed from 83/1 to 102/6. Her clean hitting, supported by Sneh Rana’s cameo of 33, lifted India to a competitive total of 251 all out  in 49.5 overs. Tryon was the pick of the bowlers with 3/32 , while De Klerk, Kapp, and Mlaba chipped in with two wickets each, ensuring the Proteas didn’t face an insurmountable chase. The Chase: From Collapse to Comeback Chasing 252, South Africa’s top order found themselves in deep trouble early. Star opener Tazmin Brits  fell to a sharp return catch from Kranti Goud, followed by quick dismissals of Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp. By the time the scoreboard read 81/5 , India appeared firmly in control. Captain Laura Wolvaardt  (70 off 111) and Chloe Tryon  (49 off 66) began the fightback, putting on a gritty 59-run stand that steadied the innings. Still, when Wolvaardt was bowled by Kranti Goud, South Africa were staring at defeat, until Nadine de Klerk walked in. The De Klerk Masterclass 💥 At 142/6, the equation was steep - over 100 runs needed from 80 balls. But De Klerk unleashed one of the most remarkable counter-attacks in World Cup history. The all-rounder played fearlessly, mixing controlled aggression with smart placement. She blasted 84 off just 54 balls *, hitting 8 fours and 5 sixes , including three towering hits in the final overs that turned the game on its head. Her shot selection under pressure was impeccable, each boundary breathing life back into South Africa’s chase. Alongside Tryon, De Klerk added a crucial 69-run partnership , pushing the Proteas past 200 and within touching distance of victory. With nerves of steel, she guided the side home with just 7 balls remaining , sealing a sensational three-wicket win and earning the Player of the Match  award. A Statement Win This was more than just two points on the log, it was a declaration of intent. After their heavy loss to England and a strong rebound against New Zealand, South Africa have now beaten the hosts and tournament favourites in front of a roaring Indian crowd. The result leaves both India and South Africa tied on points after three matches, sitting in third and fourth place on the standings. The top four teams will qualify for the semifinals, and this win has firmly reignited South Africa’s campaign. Next Fixture The Proteas will look to keep their winning streak alive when they face Bangladesh  next on 13 October 2025  at the ACA-VDCA Stadium, Visakhapatnam . • Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak Hits Merafong Amid Nationwide Livestock Crisis

A serious Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)  outbreak has hit livestock herds across parts of the Merafong City Local Municipality , with the Losberg area near Fochville  currently the worst affected. State veterinarians have confirmed multiple cases and begun emergency vaccination and quarantine procedures, but vaccine shortages are hampering progress. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Outbreak Confirmed in West Rand/Carletonville According to Dr Nomkhosi Cele , a State Veterinarian based in Randfontein, several cattle have tested positive for FMD, including both free-ranging and kraal-confined animals. The disease affects cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs , causing painful mouth and hoof sores, drooling, and lameness . The Losberg area has been placed under veterinary surveillance , and livestock movements in and out of the affected zones are restricted. Residents and farmers are urged to report any suspicious animal symptoms immediately. 16 Farms Infected Across the West Rand By late September, 16 properties  in the West Rand district  were confirmed to have FMD, including: 🐄 6 communal kraals 🚜 4 commercial farms 🏡 Several smaller holdings According to Jaco Taute , Chairperson of the Red Meat Producers’ Organisation (RPO), the outbreak was traced back to cattle purchased at a livestock auction , a reminder of how quickly FMD can spread through trading networks. All infected properties have been placed under strict quarantine , and teams are tracing any recent animal movements to prevent further spread. Testing, Vaccination, and a Shortage of Vaccines State veterinary teams began testing and vaccinating  livestock in and around Merafong immediately after the outbreak confirmation. Animals that were exposed or nearby are receiving emergency doses, with follow-up boosters  planned in three to four weeks. Vaccinated cattle are branded with an ‘F’  for traceability and monitoring. However, the limited vaccine supply  poses a major challenge. South Africa’s Department of Agriculture recently imported 900,000 vaccine doses  from the Botswana Vaccine Institute , costing roughly R72 million . The vaccines are being distributed to priority areas across the country, including the West Rand and North West province , under police escort due to their critical importance. In the long term, the Department has announced plans to build a local FMD vaccine production facility , expected to produce 200,000 doses annually  by March 2026 . This would reduce South Africa’s dependence on imports and allow faster responses to future outbreaks. The North West and Beyond: A Widening Crisis The Merafong outbreak  is part of a broader national crisis. By September 2025, the Department of Agriculture reported 274 active outbreak sites  across five provinces. The North West , which borders Merafong, recorded 26 outbreak sites , particularly around Potchefstroom, Ventersdorp , and Rustenburg . Earlier in 2025, outbreaks were confirmed in KwaZulu-Natal , Mpumalanga , Gauteng , and Free State , mostly traced back to livestock auctions  and interprovincial cattle movement . In May, the country’s largest feedlot, Karan Beef in Heidelberg , suspended operations after more than 2,000 animals showed symptoms. Later, outbreaks reached the North West , with cases detected on farms in JB Marks Municipality (Potchefstroom)  and an abattoir in Madibeng . Each infected site was immediately quarantined, and emergency vaccination campaigns were rolled out. National Response and Prevention Measures South Africa has faced recurring FMD challenges since losing its FMD-free zone status in 2019 . Recent flare-ups have pushed authorities to rethink national disease control strategies. Key measures now in place include: 🚫 Quarantine and movement bans  for all infected farms. 🧬 Genetic tracing and surveillance testing  in high-risk areas. 💉 Ring vaccination campaigns  around confirmed cases. 🐖 Mandatory 28-day isolation  for new livestock purchases before joining herds. The government also convened a national “FMD Bosberaad”  in July, bringing together over 400 agricultural experts, farmers, and veterinarians  to strengthen South Africa’s Progressive Control Pathway  strategy. The aim is to contain the outbreak, stabilize trade, and eventually restore the country’s FMD-free export status . Economic Fallout: Farmers and Exports Under Strain Although Foot-and-Mouth Disease is not harmful to humans , its economic consequences are devastating. Meat exports have been suspended , with China  halting all imports of South African cloven-hoofed animals and beef products earlier this year. Movement bans  have disrupted cattle sales, leaving farmers unable to sell stock or attend auctions. Consumers  may face higher meat prices , while producers lose income. The Red Meat Producers’ Organisation  warned that ongoing restrictions threaten the viability of both smallholder and commercial farms. Without swift containment, the industry could lose hundreds of millions in revenue. Regional Coordination: North West and Gauteng Join Forces Veterinary teams from Randfontein , Potchefstroom , and Ventersdorp  are coordinating testing and vaccination in border zones between Merafong (Gauteng)  and Dr Kenneth Kaunda District (North West) . This regional approach ensures shared resources, communication, and rapid response where outbreaks overlap. North West authorities have also intensified farm inspections and abattoir surveillance , following confirmed infections in Ventersdorp  and Madibeng  earlier this year. Farmers in the West Rand and North West regions are being urged to report symptoms such as: Excessive drooling or salivation 💧 Blisters on the tongue or hooves 🐾 Limping or sudden difficulty walking 🚶‍♂️ Loss of appetite or reduced milk yield 🥛 Any suspected cases must be reported immediately to the local State Veterinarian and animals must not be moved or sold . Food Safety and Public Reassurance Authorities emphasise that FMD does not affect humans  and cannot be transmitted through food . Beef, milk, and pork from inspected and approved facilities remain safe for consumption. All meat from affected zones undergoes strict inspection  and, when necessary, heat treatment  to eliminate any potential viral risk. The public is advised not to panic or avoid buying local meat, as the threat is purely animal-based . Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Timeline of the 2024–2025 Outbreak 📅 Late 2024  – Initial cases reported in KwaZulu-Natal . 📅 Feb 2025  – Spread to Mpumalanga  via infected auction cattle. 📅 May 2025  – Major outbreak at Karan Beef, Heidelberg , Gauteng. 📅 June 2025  – First confirmed cases in North West  (Potchefstroom/Ventersdorp). 📅 July 2025  – Free State  reports first FMD case near Kroonstad. 📅 Aug 2025  – Government imports 900,000 vaccine doses  from Botswana. 📅 Sept 2025  – Merafong outbreak  confirmed; 16 farms infected in West Rand. 📅 Oct 2025  – Containment ongoing; vaccine shortages persist; new regulations enforced. Looking Ahead Experts remain cautiously optimistic that the outbreak curve is stabilizing, though vigilance remains critical. The planned local vaccine plant , better auction traceability , and farmer awareness campaigns  are expected to strengthen long-term disease control. For now, success depends on community cooperation  and continued government transparency . Farmers, veterinarians, and consumers all have a role to play in restoring South Africa’s livestock health and protecting its agricultural economy. • Weekly News Roundup: Carletonville & Fochville

A week of contrasts unfolded across Carletonville and Fochville, marked by environmental concerns, community achievements, public safety challenges, and tragic loss. From sewage overflows in Khutsong to a record-breaking ultramarathon victory in Fochville, residents witnessed a mix of frustration, pride, and reflection that painted a vivid picture of life in the region. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Infrastructure and Safety Under Scrutiny in Khutsong In Khutsong, serious infrastructure concerns have once again surfaced following multiple sewage incidents in the newly developed Extension 6 area. Residents reported overflowing manholes and raw sewage flooding near residential properties, despite the development not yet being fully occupied. Calls to the Merafong City Local Municipality reportedly went unanswered, prompting some households to hire private plumbers to contain the damage. Concerns grew further with the death of a two-year-old girl who drowned in an open manhole near the old Khutsong reservoir. The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for municipal accountability. Community members claim that open and leaking drains have been a longstanding issue despite a R1.9 million expenditure on manhole repairs. Residents are now demanding a comprehensive audit and investigation into infrastructure maintenance and public safety practices. Crime and Security Concerns Carletonville residents continue to grapple with rising criminal activity. Reports this week highlight an increase in vehicle thefts, particularly targeting older models such as VW Golfs and Toyotas parked near local mines. Cars with number plates from neighboring countries have also been identified as targets, as their registration gaps in the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) make recovery more difficult. Adding to the growing sense of unease, a kidnapping case involving a businessman from Soweto unfolded near Carletonville. The victim was lured by two men under the pretense of business registration assistance and was later abducted, leaving two children abandoned in his vehicle. He was eventually released after being assaulted. Meanwhile, police have also issued a warning against escalating fraud and online scams. Residents are being urged to remain alert to banking impersonation schemes, counterfeit money circulation, and deceptive digital communications. Authorities advise using two-factor authentication, avoiding public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions, and never sharing personal verification codes. Community and Tragedy in Fochville Fochville’s community mourns the tragic passing of a beloved former learner and head boy of Hoërskool Fochville, who lost his life in a car accident on the R54 between Fochville and Potchefstroom. The 20-year-old, remembered for his leadership and compassionate nature, was returning from university when his vehicle collided with a truck and caught fire. The incident has deeply affected the town, with tributes pouring in from his former school and community members. Achievements and Recognition Amid the week’s challenges, moments of inspiration emerged. Fochville’s ultra-marathon runner achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the Hennie van Rensburg 100-Miler and completing the miXGrit Challenge, becoming the first woman to achieve this feat. Her consistent endurance performances have placed her among South Africa’s most decorated long-distance runners, inspiring athletes nationwide. Carletonville also shared in a moment of pride as a former local learner was recognised with a national Owl Award from BirdLife South Africa. Her work in avian conservation and environmental advocacy, spanning two decades, continues to influence national policy and safeguard endangered species across the country. Community Outlook As Carletonville and Fochville move forward, the region stands at a crossroads between frustration and resilience. While municipal service failures and safety issues continue to test public patience, local heroes, community achievements, and collective calls for accountability serve as reminders of the area’s enduring strength and spirit. #Carletonville #Fochville #CommunityNews #Merafong #Khutsong #Infrastructure #PublicSafety #EnvironmentalAwareness #CrimeWatch #LocalHeroes #SouthAfrica 💧🚓🏃‍♀️🐦🌍🕊️💔🏡

  • Government to Block Cellphone Signals in Prisons

The South African Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed plans to roll out signal-blocking technology across the country’s prisons - a move aimed at cutting off the lifeline of criminal syndicates allegedly run from behind bars. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Pilot Launch Before the End of 2025 According to the department, a pilot project will begin before the end of 2025 at five correctional facilities, including the notorious Pollsmoor Prison in the Western Cape. These facilities were selected based on intelligence linking them to high levels of gang-related activity and illicit cellphone use. Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald said the decision was long overdue. “We cannot continue to allow prisons to be command centers for organised crime. Blocking illegal communications is a matter of public safety,” he stated. If successful, the pilot will be expanded nationwide, marking a major technological and security shift within the prison system. Aims: Cut Off Crime, Boost Control The main objective is to prevent inmates from coordinating robberies, extortion, and drug trafficking operations through smuggled cellphones - a growing concern for law enforcement. Officials estimate that hundreds of illegal devices are confiscated every month, yet the problem persists. The new signal-blocking system is expected to eliminate the need for constant raids and allow correctional officers to focus on rehabilitation and security instead of cellphone detection. “This is about restoring control,” said a senior DCS official. “Prisons are meant to rehabilitate offenders, not enable them to run criminal empires.” Human Rights Groups Sound the Alarm However, not everyone is applauding the initiative. Prisoner rights organisations have raised concerns about potential human rights and legal implications. Critics argue that blanket signal-blocking could interfere with legitimate communications between inmates and their families, lawyers, or rehabilitation programmes, particularly those that rely on monitored digital systems. The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has cautioned that the department must ensure that access to legal counsel and emergency communication channels is not compromised. “Security cannot come at the expense of constitutional rights,” the SAHRC said in a statement. Technical and Legal Challenges Ahead Experts warn that the rollout will not be without hurdles. Signal-blocking technology must be carefully calibrated to avoid affecting nearby communities or emergency networks, a challenge that has derailed similar attempts in other countries. Legal analysts also note that South Africa’s telecommunication laws strictly regulate signal interference, meaning the DCS will need to work closely with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) to stay within legal bounds. A Step Toward Safer Prisons Despite the controversy, government sources insist the plan is both necessary and inevitable. With crime syndicates continuing to thrive inside prison walls, the initiative represents one of the strongest measures yet to disrupt gang operations from within the correctional system. “If this pilot succeeds,” Groenewald said, “we will close one of the biggest loopholes in our fight against organised crime. Prisons must become places of reform, not recruitment.” As the country watches closely, the success of the pilot at Pollsmoor and other high-risk facilities may well determine the future of prison security (and the delicate balance between safety and human rights) in South Africa’s correctional landscape.

The event aims to bring together students, staff, and community members for a good-natured evening of sipping, chatting, and maybe learning a little about wine along the way. Boland Cellar, known for their Melita Chenin Blanc 2019 (low alcohol), will take centre stage on the tasting tables. With Darran Shuttle guiding the experience, guests can expect a mix of insight and easygoing fun, less “sniff, swirl, spit” and more “pour, taste, enjoy.” Ticket Details and Practicalities Tickets cost R295, which includes the meal, and can be bought online at Quicket . Sales close on 14 October 2025, so last-minute planners might want to move quickly before it’s sold out. If you’re attending with friends or family and would like to share a table, organisers ask that you send an email with your preferred seating arrangements, because no one wants to spend the evening talking to someone else’s aunt by mistake. Refunds can only be processed the day before the event, so think carefully before deciding that night classes suddenly sound more appealing than Chenin Blanc. • Community Updates from Local WhatsApp Groups

Potchefstroom Weekly Service Delivery & Safety Update 25 September to 8 October 2025 From broken cables to blocked drains, jack-knifed trucks to low water pressure, Potchefstroom’s community WhatsApp groups were once again a vital lifeline of real-time updates.  Over the past two weeks, residents and councillors shared dozens of alerts, reports, and safety warnings. This roundup highlights key disruptions, safety concerns, and notices that shaped daily life across town. 🚧 Infrastructure Disruptions & Power Outages Over the past two weeks, several neighbourhoods in Potchefstroom have faced intermittent power outages , largely attributed to ongoing cable faults, infrastructure repair delays, and cable theft. Residents in Beyers Naudé, Kampstraat, Klerkstraat, Bloemstraat, and Molenstraat  experienced extended outages, with many reporting service disruptions in the early hours of the morning. Local councillors, including Cllr Klopper  and Cllr Madra de Bruin , were in contact with JB Marks electricity teams and continuously relayed updates regarding cable joints, faulty substations, and restoration estimates. In some areas, teams worked through the night to restore services. Unfortunately, cable theft remains a persistent problem , with residents expressing frustration and suggesting community-led deterrents such as greasing poles or collaborating with local security. 🚨 URGENT SAFETY ALERT: Burned Railway Station A critical safety notice was issued urging residents, especially students, not to enter the burned-down Potchefstroom railway station . Despite the attraction for photo opportunities, the site remains highly dangerous due to exposed live electrical lines . Tragically, another fatal incident occurred recently. Investigations are ongoing, and pressure is being placed on Transnet to secure the area. Until then, residents are strongly advised to stay away for their own safety. 💦 Water Disruptions & Infrastructure Faults Multiple reports emerged about low water pressure  and sewage overflows , especially in the Nieuwe and Beyers Naudé  areas. The issues appear tied to blockages at key manholes and possible leaks near critical zones like the hospital and railway lines. JB Marks technical teams were reported to be working on temporary clamping  of broken pipes, while longer-term repairs are still being scheduled. Water supply was expected to return in phases late at night after stopgap measures were implemented. 🐶 Community Updates & Lost Pets Local groups helped reunite a dog that arrived at Laerskool Baillie Park  with its possible owner after community members quickly identified where it might belong. Such responsiveness highlights the power of these platforms for small but meaningful neighbourly action. 🛑 Trimpark & Event Management Concerns The planned Trimpark event on 4 October  drew concern after it was revealed that some councillors were neither informed nor consulted. The event includes extended hours of operation (until 06:00 the next morning), raising noise and security concerns from neighbouring wards. Communication breakdowns between JB Marks Municipality and ward representatives were noted. ⚠️ Road Closures, Traffic Collisions & Marches Several alerts affected traffic and public mobility: R54 Vereeniging–Potch Road  was temporarily closed for a forensic investigation following a head-on collision with fatalities. A jack-knifed truck  near Mooirivier Mall caused additional delays. Notices about marches and protests on campus were shared in advance, helping residents and businesses plan accordingly. 🏘 Ward Communication & Group Structure Councillor Klopper reminded residents in Ward 7  to use the correct sub-group chats for reporting issues. These platforms are actively monitored by ward representatives to ensure streamlined support and issue resolution. 🧠 Resident Engagement & Sector Meetings Ward 22 councillor Zander Janse van Rensburg  extended an invitation to local restaurant and club owners to attend a planning meeting aimed at aligning economic growth with community concerns. 📲 Continue using your ward’s official communication channels to report service interruptions, emergencies, or safety threats. These platforms help councillors and departments respond swiftly and track community feedback. #️⃣ 🧾🚨⚙️💬 #TheGoToGuy #PotchUpdate #KeepSafe #ServiceMatters #CommunityPulse
